Daizen Maeda leaving Celtic is the silliest transfer talk yet and I wouldn't sell him for £75million

Sutty sees the Japanese star as irreplaceable right now as he hopes for less stressful Champions League trip to Kazakhstan
Some people call the transfer window the silly season with all the rumours and speculation flying around.

But any talk of Daizen Maeda being sold by Celtic might be the silliest suggestion of the lot.

It would be absolutely ridiculous to even entertain any notion of letting the attacker go right now.

I don't care what anyone says about the Celtic model or the prospect of a big money bid. Maeda simply cannot be allowed to depart right now. For any money.
Even if it's crazy cash – £75m wouldn't cut it. Honestly.
That might sound like I've lost my marbles but I'm serious. Celtic wouldn't be losing just one player. Maeda's versatility would mean they would be saying goodbye to at least two – and that's at a time when they are already down to the bare bones in the front areas.
There are some who say he's 27-year-old, he has two years left on his deal and this might be the time to cash in. That would be fine if there were two replacements already lined up.
But, given Celtic still haven't replaced Kyogo or Nicolas Kuhn, I'd doubt it would be the case with Maeda.
I didn't think Kyogo would go in January. I didn't' expect them not to sign another striker.

Likewise in the summer, I felt Kuhn was worth keeping for another year, or at least there would be cover in the door first. I've been proved wrong both times and I could be again with this one.
But selling Maeda in this window would be just about the final straw. What would Brendan Rodgers be left with?

He already needs wide men and a striker. The board would be taking the legs out from under him.
There's also suggestions he might want to go and it's difficult to keep a player who is determined to leave.
Why should it be? Maeda has two years left on his contract – a contract he was happy to sign – and you have a duty to your employers.

It's up to the clubs to decide when someone is sold. I get the stuff about unhappy players making like difficult and you can see it with Alexander Isak at Newcastle.
But refusing to play is a breach of contract. You either get on with your work or you get your wages docked until you see sense.
There's absolutely no suggestion it would get to that stage with Maeda or if he even is agitating for a move at this point in time.

He is a guy who always gives his heart and soul and I doubt that would change regardless.
He's also the most important player in the squad right now so he needs to stay. If there are options in 12 months then so be it, that could be the time to deal. But not now.
Celtic are already gambling with the Champions League with their failure to land attacking targets in this window.

Maeda going and they'd be folding altogether. And at some stage you have to say enough is enough. Rodgers has watched top talents head out of the door and his squad has got weaker.
The manager batted away the Maeda question at his press conference before the Falkirk game but saying he was as confident as he could be that he'd still be at the club beyond the window wasn't exactly emphatic.
Rodgers is having to tread carefully right now but he just be seriously hacked off at the moment.

Forget about the nonsense about him not wearing a club tie, he had one hand tied behind his back.
He also knows there's a duty to provide the best possible team for the supporters who stump up their hard-earned cash on season tickets, merchandise and everything else.
They can't be expected to keep digging deep for an inferior product.

There's no point in repeating myself about the dithering in the market this summer but it has cranked up the pressure ahead of Wednesday's Champions League play-off with FC Kairat.
On paper Celtic should be strong enough regardless to take care of the Kazakhstan side over two legs. But it's not a given.

Anything can happen in these ties. Slovan Bratislava had a man sent off over there in the last round, lost the game and it cost them.
Celtic took a 5-0 lead to Astana a few years back and at one stage in the away game it looked like everything was going to pot.
I remember meeting Rodgers in the stadium after that game and looked absolutely shattered.

He's been put through the mill that night and would give everything for a stress free trip this time.
Wednesday is vital. The pressure is on for Celtic to take a lead – preferably a commanding one – out to Almaty as we know going out there is demanding for a number of reasons.
That means having a cutting edge where it matters, and that's been the concern in the league games so far.

Celtic got off to a good start with wins against St Mirren and Aberdeen but none of the front three scored in either game.
They are getting by right now but until reinforcements arrive, they are just getting by and that could come back to bite them. Kairat are a defensive team and they will come to Celtic Park and sit in.
They could be difficult to break down and that's where the lack of options in the final third starts to worry me.
Listen, Celtic could just as easily go out and stick five past them, you never know, but everyone would be a lot more relaxed going in if the likes of Kyogo, Jota and Kuhn were there
At least Maeda is someone Celts can hang their hand on – and it has to stay that way no matter what.

Dancing Gemini all set to bounce back in Prix Jacques le Marois

However, given plenty of time to recover since the Queen Anne Stakes, Teal is confident of a revival at Deauville where he will recommence rivalries with what are becoming familiar faces. Teal said: 'He travelled over on Thursday and he had a little hack canter around the track on Friday morning. He was quite perky apparently, so all is good. 'It was just a farce of a pace at Ascot and if you take that run out of it he's bang there, isn't he? 'There's a few coming in off disappointing runs, it's not just him. Notable Speech has had a couple of disappointing runs and Docklands last time didn't perform like he did at Ascot. It's the nature of the beast in these big races I'm afraid – it sometimes comes down to how the dice rolls on the day. 'The Japanese horse (Ascoli Piceno) looks pretty strong, so it's going to be a good race and we're there to do our best and we'll see what happens. 'We only know about our horse, we don't know how the others are performing or training. Our horse seems to be in good form and what will be will be. Whoever wins it is going to have to put up a very good performance and hopefully it goes in our favour.' The Group One event has been a happy hunting ground for British and Irish raiders down the years, with the last French-trained winner coming in 2017. Another on the comeback trail is Notable Speech, with Charlie Appleby quickly abandoning the sprinting experiment that saw him contest the July Cup most recently to return to the distance over which he scooped the 2000 Guineas last season. Speaking on the Godolphin website, Appleby said: 'Notable Speech goes into this in good order and we feel that stepping back up to a straight mile is going to suit. 'He looks very competitive in this field and can hopefully get his head back in front at this level.' Meanwhile, Aidan O'Brien will rely on both one-time Derby hope and Prix Jean Prat third The Lion in Winter and Minstrel Stakes scorer Diego Velazquez in search of just his second-ever win in the race, with the latter sporting the famous silks of the Sangster family having transferred ownership mid-week. 'He's incredibly exciting and a horse we had been keeping our eye on,' said Sam Sangster on the purchase, with sights set on Group One honours this term. 'There's plenty of racing in him for the rest of the year starting on Sunday and I don't think a Group One is out of his reach at all and it's in Aidan we trust. 'He's done enough for a place at stud already in my opinion and he has a fabulous pedigree as well, but if we can get that Group One it will boost him even more and that will be the aim for the rest of the year.'

Newcastle draw shows the need for Villa reinforcements

It was Aston Villa's first opening day Premier League home game for 15 years. It would be too far to say fans would be happy to wait another 15 for the next one but it is game which will not live long in the memory.A stalemate against Newcastle at least ensured Villa will go a calendar year unbeaten at home in the Premier League. But, especially in the first half, they were undercooked and second best behind a Newcastle side who are a direct competitor for a Champions League Magpies pipped Villa to fifth on goal difference last season and, on this evidence, may put daylight between the sides by the end of the current is clear Villa need quality reinforcements - they are without former loanees Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio and are about to sell Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle for £40m - but financial restrictions have ruled Villa's summer transfer spend. Emery called for a "review" of profit and sustainability rules in his programme column and afterwards insisted Villa will continue to respect the rules. "I am happy how we are managing things," he said. "Since I've been here we have done fantastic transfer window. We have to be intelligent and the most important thing is how we are building the team and getting as strong as possible with the players we have. "We are ambitious but we are ambitious trying to respect the rules and trying to get the best players possible. We are not going to rest in case we can be with some options in the transfer window."Ezri Konsa's 66th-minute red card halted Villa's momentum after they managed to wrestle control from Newcastle after the break. Boubacar Kamara headed at Nick Pope before Ollie Watkins tested Pope but Emery had to accept a point as a positive. He added: "We are not happy when we are losing two points at home. I think more or less they maybe deserved more because they had better chances. We have to accept it."

Rodgers issues verdict on Kenny's Celtic display vs Falkirk

The Irish striker got the nod as his fellow countryman, Adam Idah, dropped to the bench. Kenny eventually played until the 62nd minute, when he was replaced by summer signing Shin Yamada. In his post-match press conference, Rodgers was directly asked about Kenny's performance in Celtic's 4-1 win: "I think he worked very hard," he replied. "He's an honest boy who gives his all in the game, and that's what the team's about. Read more: "[He] didn't have so many chances, a couple of good wee runs, didn't quite drop to him in the box, but I thought he worked very hard and then created the chance then for Shin Yamada to come on." Kenny didn't manage to get himself on the scoresheet. He was handed a new contract by Celtic last week, keeping him at the club until at least the summer of 2029. The Scottish Premiership champions also recently tied down Dane Murray to a new deal, with his now lasting until 2028. He scored in last night's win over Falkirk: "I think his ceiling's so high," said Rodgers of the central defender after the match. "There are areas of the game that he needs to clearly, obviously work on. "But he's 6'4", he's quick, he can take the ball. He has a comfort with the ball which aligns with top players and he just, again, concentration is something that's key for defenders. "But I really like him and that's hence the reason we've tied him down. And I think he's got a great future."
