‘100 feet down the hillside': Witness describes scene of crash that killed Indian-origin family in US
The Marshall County Sheriff's Office confirmed the deaths in a statement on Sunday, identifying the victims as Dr. Kishore Divan (89), Mrs. Asha Divan (85), Mr. Shailesh Divan (86), and Mrs. Gita Divan (84).
'Marshal County Sheriff Mike Dougherty has confirmed that the four individuals who were reported missing from Buffalo, New York, have been found deceased following a vehicle crash. Their vehicle was located on Saturday, August 2, at approximately 9:30 PM, off a steep embankment along Big Wheeling Creek Road. First responders were on the scene for more than five hours. Sheriff Dougherty extends condolences to the families of the victims,' the sheriff's office said in a statement.
The senior citizens, en route from Buffalo to Prabhupada's Palace of Gold in West Virginia, were last seen at a Pennsylvania Burger King on July 29.
A witness, Ronald Rush Jr., commented on the sheriff's department's Facebook post, saying, 'Went up there last night to see if we could help and found them about 8 miles down the road from the temple they were going, my guess that they flew off the road, 100ft down the hillside.'

Many who knew the Divan family paid tribute online.
One person wrote on Facebook: "This is most heartbreaking tragedy in which four loving and caring people lost their lives. Divan family spent their time in cultural and religious activities at Hindu Jain Temple in East Amherst, New York. Dr.Divan was head of Anesthegiology dept.of Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Erie County, New York. After retirement he spent more time traveling and local American Indian community events. Our deep condolences to his family and countless number of friends.'
Another person added, 'I know them very well. Very good hearted people. So sorry.'

Bangladesh, after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, recorded a 230% increase in attacks on journalists, a New Delhi-based rights group said in its report released on Monday (August 4, 2025). The Rights and Risks Analysis Group (RRAG) stated that press freedom in Bangladesh deteriorated under Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, with attacks on 878 journalists between August 2024 and July 2025, almost 230% more than the 383 journalists attacked from August 2023 to July 2024, when Ms. Hasina was the Prime Minister. The RRAG said that the number of criminal cases against journalists increased by 558% from 35 cases during 2023-2024 to 195 cases during the first year of Dr. Yunus as the Chief Advisor. 'While the Hasina regime was not known to have denied any accreditation to journalists, Dr. Yunus used accreditation as an instrument to punish the journalists allegedly associated with the previous regime and denied accreditation to 167 of them,' RRAG director Suhas Chakma said. 'Unlike the Hasina regime, the interim government under Dr. Yunus let loose the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit, the country's anti-money laundering agency, against 107 journalists. Finally, while 348 journalists faced acts of violence and criminal intimidation under Sheikh Hasina's regime, mostly during the July 2024 uprising, 431 journalists faced acts of violence and criminal intimidation under Dr. Yunus,' he said. The RRAG listed a few cases of murder of journalists this year. They included Khandaker Shah Alam, a correspondent of Daily Matrijagat, killed in a targeted retaliation on June 25 after he was released from prison. The report cited the arrest warrant against three journalists of Bangladesh Pratidin under the Digital Security Act on July 27, despite Asif Nazrul, the Law Advisor to the government, declaring that all cases under the Act had been withdrawn. Another case highlighted by the report is that of Konkon Karmakar, who was dismissed by The Daily Star on April 21 after he reported on the death of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a Hindu, which was picked up by multiple Indian media outlets and flagged by India's Ministry of External Affairs. Mr. Chakma said Dr. Yunus established the 'CA Press Wing Facts', a de facto censorship authority, to 'manufacture the government version of truth and intimidate the media houses and NGOs through disinformation'. The RRAG report stated that a part of the £474,468 provided by the British Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office to strengthen the office of Dr Yunus was used to support the CA Press Wing Facts. The group said Britain should review its support to the interim government of Bangladesh on governance issues and consider withdrawing bilateral support in the light of the silencing of the media in the country.

Ohio Names Mathura Sridharan As Solicitor General, Online Trolls Target Her For Wearing Bindi
Sridharan is also trained in Carnatic music and has performed at various sabhas, including during Chennai's December music season in 2010 Mathura Sridharan, an Indian-origin attorney with a distinguished academic and legal background, has been appointed as the new Solicitor General of Ohio, becoming the state's top appellate lawyer. While the milestone marks a significant achievement in her career, it has also made her the target of online abuse, largely centered around her wearing of a traditional bindi. The announcement was made on July 31 by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, who praised Sridharan as 'brilliant" and 'exceptionally qualified" for the position. In her role, she will argue on behalf of the state in high-profile appellate cases, including those before the US Supreme Court. Sridharan replaces Benjamin Flowers, who stepped down to join the US Department of Justice. She had previously served as Deputy Solicitor General and led Ohio's Tenth Amendment Center. She is credited with arguing Ohio v. EPA, a major environmental case, before the Supreme Court earlier this year. Despite her credentials, Sridharan faced a wave of social media trolling following her appointment. Much of the criticism focused not on her legal qualifications but on her Indian heritage and the red bindi on her forehead in official portraits. Some users questioned her 'Americanness," while others made xenophobic claims such as, 'Ohio will soon be governed entirely by Indians." However, Yost quickly came to her defence.
