Spain Evacuates Over 1000 People as Wildfires Threaten UNESCO Heritage Site
Spanish authorities announced Monday the evacuation of more than 1,000 people in the country's northwest, as wildfires threatened a UNESCO World Heritage site.
According to Swiss radio Lac, around 400 residents were displaced from Carucedo and surrounding areas, along with 700 more from nearby towns close to Las Médulas, which is an ancient Roman gold-mining region.
The site is well known for its striking red rock formations and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The president of the Castile and León regional government, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, said many of the fires were the result of deliberate acts of violence.
He said on X: 'We will relentlessly pursue those responsible for these attacks, which endanger lives and safety, and pose a threat to our historical and natural heritage."
Wildfires have also been reported in Galicia (northwest) and Navarre (north).
Spain is in the second week of a heatwave, with temperatures reaching close to 40°C in many regions.
The extreme heat is expected to persist at least until Thursday, prompting civil protection authorities to issue high-risk wildfire alerts for much of the country.

Villarreal says season-ticket holders can travel to Miami for free to league game against Barcelona - World
Villarreal is promising travel and tickets for free for season-ticket holders if its Spanish league match against Barcelona is played in Miami in December. The club said Tuesday that those who don't want to go, or can't go, will get a 20% discount on their season tickets. The Spanish soccer federation on Monday approved a request for the match to be played in the United States on Dec. 20. UEFA and FIFA now have to approve the request before it can be made official. 'We would be the first (Spanish) team to play a league match abroad,' Villarreal president Fernando Roig told a news conference. 'It would greatly help us expand our brand in a key market like the United States.' Staging a match abroad has long been part of the league's goal to promote soccer and its brand in other countries. It first tried to stage a match in the U.S. in 2018, with a game between Barcelona and Girona, but the idea was dismissed after criticism from players, fans and clubs. Noura Bouzo Crafts Miniature Hegra Incense Burners for AlUla
Saudi designer Noura Bouzo transforms Hegra's monumental tombs into sandstone incense burners, with smoke drifting from detailed carvings, sold exclusively in AlUla. Saudi designer, artist and creative director Noura Bouzo is making incense burners modeled after one of AlUla's Hegra archaeological sites. The decorated facades and monumental tombs are home to one of the largest ancient Nabatean cities, second only to Petra in Jordan. These red and yellow sandstone miniatures look like exact replicas of the country's first UNESCO World Heritage site. Noura's creation is crafted to have smoke dance gracefully out of a hole in the top of a small boulder. Below, two doors sit beneath triangular inscriptions that mimic the Hegra rocks. The one-of-a-kind incense burners are sold exclusively at AlUla shops. Noura is known for her incense burner recreations of famous Saudi Arabian landmarks, such as the Tuwaiq mountains and historical mud palace Qasr Saad in Diriyah. The artist founded Oasis Magazine, the country's first English language arts and culture publication, and co-curated Saudi's national pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2023. She is also a co-founder of the creative consultancy &Bouqu.

Vietnam President Cuong visits Grand Egyptian Museum and Giza Pyramids - Tourism
Vietnamese President Luong Cuong, along with his accompanying delegation, visited the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) and the Giza Pyramids area as part of his official visit to Egypt. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, GEM CEO Ahmed Ghoneim accompanied the Vietnamese president and his delegation through the main hall, the grand staircase, and the main galleries, offering a detailed overview of the museum's history and exceptional collections. Highlights included the treasures of the Golden Pharaoh Tutankhamun, which will be fully displayed at the museum's official opening on 1 November. On Wednesday, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi announced that the GEM's opening day will be 1 November instead of the original date scheduled for 3 July. The government postponed the event on 21 June due to the outbreak of war between Israel and Iran. The GEM launched a soft opening in November 2023 and a trial run in October 2024, unfurling its gardens and cafes, the hanging obelisk, the atrium, the grand staircase, and the main galleries, including 12 exhibition halls, to the public. During the tour, President Cuong gifted the museum a bronze replica of the Vietnamese Ngoc Lu Drum, a significant cultural symbol of Vietnam. For his part, Ghoneim expressed his appreciation for that gesture. The Vietnamese president also praised the museum's architectural design and archaeological treasures, according to the statement. The delegation then toured the Giza Pyramids, starting with the Great Pyramid of King Khufu — the only remaining wonder of the ancient world. They also proceeded to the Great Sphinx, learned about its history and the Dream Stele, and took commemorative photographs. The visit concluded at the panorama area with views of King Khafre, King Menkaure, and the queens' pyramids. Situated near the newly inaugurated Sphinx International Airport and overlooking the iconic Pyramids of Giza, the GEM is set to become the largest museum worldwide dedicated to a single civilization — ancient Egypt. The museum spans an impressive 500,000 square metres, twice the area of the Louvre Museum and two and a half times the area of the British Museum. It houses monuments from ancient Egypt, spanning from prehistory to the early Roman period.
