A major UK supermarket chain has decided to take on fast food giants McDonald's in a new campaign to celebrate their fan favourite hash browns.
It comes after research uncovered the "great breakfast frustration' — the feeling Brits experience when they miss out on the breakfast cut-off, with over a third of Brits (42%) also calling for hash browns to be an all-day long delicacy. The UK's fourth largest supermarket, Aldi, is celebrating the beloved breakfast staple, the hash brown, and taking to the road to offer the breakfast favourite to Brits - but that's not all.

The supermarket is also bringing the heat and challenging the McDonald's legendary hash brown with their own, cheaper version of the breakfast favourite. Aldi's branded food van will be pulling up outside selected McDonald's restaurants from precisely 11:01am, just after the fast-food chain's breakfast service ends and offering free, freshly cooked hash browns to those left craving their morning potato fix.

The study revealed that 62% of UK adults believe 11am is too early to stop serving breakfast, with one in five (22%) saying they would prefer breakfast food to be available all day.

What's more, comfort (23%), flexibility (17%), and convenience (15%) were cited as the key reasons Brits love breakfast.
Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: "Brits love their hash browns and our Oakhurst Breakfast Hash Browns have developed quite the loyal following, with over half a million breakfast hash browns sold in store per week. That's why our hash brown van has been designed with one purpose — to bring the nation their crispy potato fix at any time of the day, not just before 11am.'
Aldi's Oakhurst Breakfast Hash Browns have garnered cult status among breakfast enthusiasts, often reportedly outdoing McDonald's in blind taste tests across social media and food critic reviews.

Below we share how much money each high street bank lets you withdraw each day. BARCLAYS The bank of over 20 million Brits lets customers withdraw up to £300 per day when abroad. This rises to £1000 for those with a premier account. Barclays said customers have amended their cash limits in their Barclays app then these will apply when abroad as well. That means if you set your withdrawal limit to £200, you will only be able to take this much out when you are abroad. You will also be charged a 2.99% fee for withdrawing cash abroad with your Barclays debit card. That means you would be charged an extra £2.99 for withdrawing £100 abroad. The fee will also apply if you pay using your debit card. Lloyds Lloyds said customers can withdraw up to £800 per day when abroad. However, it warned the amount you can take out may vary depending on which ATM you choose to withdraw cash from. Lloyds customers are also charged a 2.99% fee for using their card abroad. But Club Lloyds members have recently had this fee waived as part of changes to the scheme. It now costs £5 per month to have a Club Lloyds account after the price was hiked from £3. Halifax Halifax is a subsidiary of Lloyds and also has a £800 maximum withdrawal fee. Customers are also charged a 2.99% fee for using their card abroad. But from August 1, Halifax Rewards customers will have this charge removed. It comes as part of a refresh of the banking offer, which will see new features added and some taken away. SANTANDER The high street bank said the highest amount that customers can withdraw abroad is £300. The same rate applies to customers withdrawing cash in the UK. This applies to Santander customers using the Edge, Edge Up and Everyday current account. However customers with a Private Current Account, which has a £5 monthly fee, the daily withdrawal limit can be up to £1,500. Santander warned this may vary depending on the ATM. NATWEST NatWest has over 19 million users across the UK, making it another popular bank for customers. How much you can withdraw from an ATM when abroad depends on what type of account you have. For example, customers with a student, graduate savings and teen accounts have their limit set at £250 per day. This increases to £300 for those with premium accounts such as NatWest Silver of Platinum, which offers rewards and travel insurance. The bank also charges customers a 2.75% fee to use their debit card abroad. NATIONWIDE The bank, which has 17 million customers, said current account holders can withdraw up to £500 per day at an ATM abroad. However, the bank warned overseas banks may put higher limits on transactions. For safety purposes and customers may find they are only able to withdraw a sterling equivalent of £135 to £150 per transaction. If customers are affected by this, they can make further withdrawals on the same day up to the accounts withdrawal limit. Customers may be charged for their transactions. Nationwide customers are charged a 2.75% fee to use their debit card abroad. BEWARE OF THIS SIMPLE MISTAKE If you are travelling abroad this summer you should also be aware of this easy ATM mistake that could cost you. Cash machines will usually give you the option to pay in the local currency or in pounds. It may seem like the obvious option to pay in pounds, as it's more familiar and the currency linked to your card. However, by choosing this option you could end up paying more for the cash coming out of the ATM or for the goods you're paying for at the till. That is because the overseas bank will do the conversion to pounds and the rates are unfavourable. However, if you choose to pay in the local currency your card will instead do the conversion which is usually much more favourable. So if you are keen to save cash when abroad, you should opt to pay in the local currency and not pounds.

Supermarkets such as Tesco, Aldi and Lidl are exploiting a tax loophole to produce and sell cheap cider that harms health and causes social problems, alcohol campaigners have claimed. Over recent years, ciders – sometimes containing as much as 7.5% alcohol – have become cheaper or barely risen in price, despite the cost of beer, wine and spirits soaring, according to research by Alcohol Change UK. Supermarkets are able to sell high-strength ciders at 'pocket money prices' by taking advantage of a subsidy intended to boost apple production, Alcohol Change UK says. It means that the cheapest cider Tesco sells – Compton Orchard, which is 4% alcohol by volume (ABV) – now costs the same as the supermarket's own-brand apple juice, at just £1 a litre. While the apple juice has risen 70% in cost since 2020, the cheapest cider costs 2.4% less now than the equivalent product then. A 2.5-litre bottle of Frosty Jack's cider, which is 7.5% ABV, has only increased in price by 5.3% since 2020 – from £4.89 to £5.15 – despite consumer price index inflation having been 26% over that time. But the cost of a pint of cider bought in a pub has gone up since 2020 by an average of 15.5%, from £3.88 to £4.48, Alcohol Change UK's research found. Similarly, the cost of two litres of own-brand cider in both Lidl and Aldi is still £1.99, even though Lidl's own-brand vodka is 25% more expensive. Under UK law, cider that is between 3.5% and 8.5% ABV is only taxed at £9.67 per litre of alcohol. That is just 46% of the £21.01 per litre of alcohol rate applied to beer. Ash Singleton, Alcohol Change UK's director of research and public affairs, said: 'Big producers knock up a deadly product with just enough concentrated apple to legally call it cider – and pocket the tax breaks. Supermarkets drive the demand, stocking it high to flog at pocket-money prices. 'From unsafe streets to NHS pressure and early deaths, working-class neighbourhoods bear the brunt of this irresponsible profit racket left by the last government.' Singleton urged ministers to 'fix the system, starting by scrapping the super-strength subsidy'. The charity has written to Ashley Dalton, the public health minister, saying the tax loophole 'allows multinational companies to cash in on reliefs meant for genuine small UK-based cider makers'. The charity said: 'It is unacceptable that the alcohol industry continues to push the cost of harm on to communities and stretched NHS and police services, while cashing on tax breaks to do so.' The British Retail Consortium, which represents supermarkets, did not respond to the disclosure that many ciders have barely risen in price while the cost of other alcoholic drinks has surged. A spokesperson said: 'Supermarkets have led the way in helping their customers drink responsibly, adopting the health department's labelling to give customers clear information about the alcohol they sell and how that relates to recommended guidelines. Working with other partners, such as the Drinkaware Trust, this has helped deliver a fall in excessive drinking. 'Increasing duties on cider would penalise the vast majority of consumers who already drink less than the government's recommended limits [of 14 units a week].' Tesco said it did not sell super-strong cider. A spokesperson said: 'We adhere to all UK pricing regulations on cider. Compton Orchard cider is 4% ABV, similar in strength to a regular lager, and we train our colleagues to use Think 25 and to ensure they sell all alcohol responsibly.' Lidl, Aldi and Compton Orchard were approached for comment.
