'Just Have To Wait...', Says PL CEO Richard Masters As Independent Body Handles Man City Charges
The Premier League issued 115 against City in February 2023 over alleged breaches of its financial rules, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation.
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters revealed that his angsty wait for a verdict over the series of finacial charges mounted against Manchester City wouldn't amount to much as the case and investigating are at the hands of an independent hearing.
The Premier League issued 115 against City in February 2023 over alleged breaches of its financial rules, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation.
The case was heard by a commission between September and December last year, but no decision has been published. The issue continues to loom over the league as the 2025/26 season begins this weekend. Masters stated that his organisation has no control over when a verdict will be reached.
'Once the allegations and the charge have been put forward, they go before an independent panel, which is independently selected. They are then in charge of the process and its timings," Masters told Sky Sports News.
'They hear the case, they decide the outcome, and we have no influence over that or its timing.
'And that's right; from an independence point of view, it is essential that independent people make those decisions, and we just have to wait.
'My frustration is irrelevant, really. I mean, I just have to wait, and legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated, but we have to be patient."
City deny any wrongdoing and assert they have a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence to clear their name. However, if they are found guilty, they could face a range of punishments, including a severe points penalty or even expulsion from the Premier League.
City were charged with failing to report accurate financial information for nine seasons spanning from 2009/10 to 2017/18, as well as failing to provide full details of former manager Roberto Mancini's pay between 2009/10 and 2012/13.
They are also charged with failing to provide full details of remuneration in contracts with players between 2010/11 and 2015/16, and with failing to co-operate with the investigation over a period from 2018 to 2023.
Since an Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008, City's fortunes have been transformed on the field from also-rans to the dominant force in English football. Eight of their ten top-flight league titles have been won since 2012, and they also won the Champions League for the first time in 2023.

PBKS Star Set To Return For Asia Cup 2025, Yashasvi Jaiswal & Shubman Gill Unlikely: Report
Last Updated: The 30-year-old right-handed batter played 17 matches in IPL 2025 and scored 604 runs for the Mohali-based franchise. India's Test captain Shubman Gill and star opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal are unlikely to be part of India's Asia Cup 2025 squad, but Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer will be picked for the premier continental event. According to a report in Sportstar on Sunday (August 17), Iyer, who last played a T20I match for India in Bengaluru on December 3, 2023, against Australia, will be included as a middle-order batter. In his last white-ball tournament for India, which was in the Champions Trophy 2025, Iyer played five matches in Dubai and scored 243 runs to finish as India's highest run getter. The 2025 edition of the Asia Cup is also scheduled to take place in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from September 9 to 28. It has been reported that 'selectors and team management are aligned on including an experienced middle-order batter suited to the slower, lower conditions expected in the UAE. If Shreyas is picked, it could mean a tough call on either Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh, both of whom were part of India's last T20I assignment, against England in January." Iyer, who leads Punjab Kings in the IPL and scored 604 runs in IPL 2025, has 1104 runs to his credit in 51 T20Is played so far. It has also been reported that RCB wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma will be Sanju Samson's deputy for the Asia Cup 2025. Jitesh last played a T20I match for India on January 14, 2024, in Indore against Afghanistan. Gill and Jaiswal last played a T20I match for India on July 30, 2024, against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. The duo was in red-hot form in the IPL 2025 and deserves a place in India's T20I squad by form and merit, but the players in the current T20I setup – Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma – haven't performed badly either, and to drop them to bring Gill and Jaiswal back makes little sense. As per Sportstar, 'The management appears inclined to stick with the core group that has excelled under Gambhir, winning 13 of 15 T20Is since his appointment." 'Additionally, with minimal turnaround time between formats—the Asia Cup final is on September 28, and the first Test against the West Indies begins on October 2 in Ahmedabad—the selectors are likely to keep Gill and Jaiswal fresh for the red-ball assignments." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
