Bay Area radio legend denies diverting GoFundMe donations to pay daughter's legal bills

Bay Area radio personality Ronn Owens has denied using donations meant to assist with his mounting medical expenses to pay off his daughter Laura Owens' legal bills.
'Laura has not received, requested, or accessed any of the GoFundMe contributions, and none of them have been — or will be — used for her legal matters,' the former KGO on-air host wrote in a Facebook post shared on Sunday, June 29.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched by friends and family on New Year's Eve to help Owens overcome financial challenges from his ongoing struggle with Parkinson's disease and other 'health battles.'
As of Tuesday, July 1, Owens has raised more than $129,000 of his $140,000 goal.
Though he is listed as the beneficiary, many have grown skeptical after Laura was indicted in an unrelated high-profile paternity case in May.
'(S)ome individuals have made defamatory claims suggesting the fund was created to support my daughter, Laura, and her legal expenses,' Owens wrote over the weekend. 'Those claims are completely false and deeply hurtful.'
Laura faces seven felony charges, including fraud and perjury, tied to a 2023 lawsuit during which she claimed she had become pregnant with twins after meeting Clayton Echard from Season 26 of 'The Bachelor.' The reality TV star denied the allegations, stating that their sexual interactions didn't involve intercourse.
Though Laura later said she had a miscarriage, officials eventually learned that she had fabricated evidence, including altering an ultrasound image.
She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
'Let me make it clear that I stand with Laura 100% and am disheartened by the online efforts to discredit us both,' Owens wrote.
The former radio host was a fixture on Bay Area airwaves for five decades, and retired in 2021 just before KGO discontinued its longtime news-talk format. He has since been open about his financial and physical hardships online.
Owens reupped his fundraising efforts last month by resharing the link to his GoFundMe campaign, noting that it 'remains a crucial source of support.'

'Sick to my stomach': New York golf course suffers severe damage from vandals

A New York-area golf club is recovering from vandals tearing up some of its fairways and greens. The private club Skenandoa Club, located in Clinton, New York, posted several photos of the severe damage done to the golf course, with tire marks all over. "I'm literally sick to my stomach," says the post written by owner Michael Intartaglia. And you can see why. The damage occurred on the eight green and ninth hole tee, fairway and bunker. One of the golf club's Facebook followers crunched some numbers on what the potential repair bill might look like: Estimated Total Damage Range: The vandals drove a large vehicle sometime late Tuesday/early Wednesday this week. The mostly private course does accept some public play Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday.

Fireworks explosion: Officials expect several dead as officials sift rubble for human remains

Human remains were found at the site of a major explosion this week at a fireworks factory near Esparto, Yolo County Sheriff's Office confirmed Friday. In a press release, the sheriff's office said they had not yet identified the remains and did not specify how many people were confirmed dead, though Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Don Hartman told the Chronicle that he was fairly certain that 'more than one' person had been killed based on the remains recovered so far. Seven people were reported missing shortly after the explosion. By Thursday, officials said at least one person had been killed in Tuesday's blast, which also triggered a 78-acre fire. By late Friday morning, coroners were still trying to locate additional bodies, though their efforts were hampered by the risk of igniting any dormant pyrotechnics that remained. The scene looked like 'devastation,' Hartman said, with rubble and debris everywhere and lingering 'hot spots' of fire. Once all remains are recovered, teams will employ rapid DNA testing on them to identify those killed in the blasts. The incident, which is being called the Oakdale Fire, began around 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday after a commercial fireworks facility ignited. The flames quickly spread to the warehouse containing the pyrotechnics, triggering a massive fireball embedded with popping fireworks and an enormous plume of smoke billowing more than 10,000 feet into the air. Among the missing were brothers and warehouse employees Joel 'Jr' Melendez, 28, Johnny Ramos, 22, and Jesus Maneces Ramos, 18, who'd just begun his first day. A GoFundMe page was set up for Melendez' pregnant wife, Maria, and their 11-month-old son. The warehouse belonged to a company called Devastating Pyrotechnics, according to a joint statement by Marysville, Yuba City, and Sutter and Yuba counties. Archived versions of the company's website describe it as having 30 years of experience producing pyrotechnic displays across California. Arson and bomb investigators from CAL FIRE are leading the investigation into the origin and cause of the explosion.

Body of Alaska cruise passenger found 1,700 feet below ridge line of intended hike

The body of a Norwegian Cruise Line passenger who went missing in Alaska has been recovered. Marites Buenafe, 62, vanished Tuesday after texting her family that she was going for a hike in Juneau, according to an Alaska State Troopers missing persons bulletin. She was reported missing after not returning to the Norwegian Bliss on time that afternoon. On Thursday, an Alaska Army National Guard helicopter spotted her body roughly 1,700 feet below the ridge line of the area she planned to hike, state troopers shared in an update via Juneau Police. 'Troopers and Juneau Mountain Rescue were able to recover her body with the assistance of Temsco Helicopters and the National Guard,' read the troopers' Facebook post, which thanked the agencies and volunteers involved. Disappearance timeline State troopers said Buenafe texted her family at around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, saying she was headed to Mount Roberts Tramway and planned to hike Gold Ridge to Gastineau Peak. Security footage showed her leaving the buildings at the top of Mount Roberts Tramway at about that time. She was supposed to return to the Norwegian Bliss by 1 p.m. that day, for the ship's scheduled 1:30 p.m. departure. A Norwegian spokesperson said multiple attempts were made to contact the guest before the ship departed. CruiseMapper shows the Bliss continuing on its week-long Alaska cruise sailing, which originated in Seattle on June 28. Search and recovery Multiple agencies searched the Gold Ridge area until Buenafe's body was recovered below the ridge line of Gold Ridge at around noon Thursday. 'Her next of kin have been notified, and her body will be sent to the state medical examiner's office for autopsy,' according to Alaska State Troopers. Norwegian told USA TODAY it's assisting local authorities in the investigation. Also, 'Our CARE team is providing support to the guest's family and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.' Contributing: Nathan Diller, USA TODAY
