Air India warns of delays as mandatory safety checks of Boeing 787 flights begin. The airline is in the process of completing the one-time safety checks directed by the Indian aviation regulator, DGCA. These checks are being carried out on the Boeing 787 fleet as they return to India, before being cleared for their next operations.The enhanced inspections follow the tragic Ahmedabad-London flight crash, which killed at least 265 people after the aircraft crashed into a resident doctors' hostel building shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Only one person on board survived. This marks the first fatal accident involving a 787 since the aircraft's commercial debut in 2011.Acknowledging the potential operational impact, Air India said that 'some of these checks could lead to higher turnaround time and potential delays on certain long-haul routes, especially those to airports with operating curfews.' The airline added that 'customers will be duly notified about any delays' and advised passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport.Air India has already completed inspections on nine Dreamliner aircraft and is 'on track to complete this process for the remaining 24 aircraft within the timeline provided by the regulator.'The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered comprehensive checks on all Dreamliners powered by GenX engines. The mandatory safety measures include:Inspection of fuel parameter monitoring and associated system checks.Inspection of cabin air compressor and associated systems.Electronic engine control system test.Engine fuel-driven actuator-operational test and oil system check.Serviceability check of hydraulic system.Review of take-off parameters.In addition, power assurance checks will be carried out within two weeks, and a 'Flight Control Inspection' will be introduced. The regulator also flagged 'repetitive snags on the Boeing Dreamliner flights during the last 15 days,' and has directed that 'maintenance actions have to be closed upon the review.'advertisementTo minimise inconvenience, Air India is offering full refunds for cancellations and complimentary rescheduling for those affected by the delays. The crew led by American Peggy Whitson will be taken to orbit on Elon Musk's commercial Dragon launch vehicle, and the project is a collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency, ISRO and the Houston firm Axiom Space, whose most ambitious project is the first commercial space station. The purpose of the collaboration is to facilitate a range of commercial activities in space, from scientific research to space tourism. Space is about to be opened up commercially, just like the world was opened like an oyster by the European Age of Exploration. About 40 years ago, when India, Poland and Hungary last sent their citizens into space, it was a domain where national governments showed off their technological prowess to compete for geopolitical gains. These three countries made a place for themselves in space under the aegis of Interkosmos, a Russian state programme launched in 1967 to help satellite nations of the USSR and other socialist nations like Afghanistan and Cuba reach space. PM Modi to begin 3-nation tour from Cyprus today

Modi is also expected to have several bilateral meetings on the margins of the summit in Kananaskis. While the PM will have a meeting with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney, his other bilateral engagements are still being worked out, official sources said. Modi will also come face to face with US President Donald Trump for the first time since their meeting in Feb. The ministry of external affairs said in a statement that the visit to Cyprus - the first by an Indian PM since AB Vajpayee visited the country in 2002 - will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union. The visit to Cyprus is significant also as it comes in the middle of India's tensions with Turkiye over the latter's support to Pakistan. Ankara's recognition of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the northern region that was seized by Turkish forces in 1974 and differences over gas exploration rights in the Eastern Mediterranean remain a constant source of tensions between Turkiye and Cyprus. India will soon become the hub of arbitration, says Law Minister
New Delhi Emphasising the importance of Institutional arbitration, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Saturday (June 14, 2025) said that India needs a strong ecosystem of alternative dispute resolution that will reduce the burden on courts and also strengthen the environment of economic confidence in the country. Speaking at a conference on 'Institutional Arbitration: An Effective Framework for Dispute Resolution', organised by the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice, at Bharat Mandapam, Mr. Meghwal said that the organisations should be ready to be both flexible and rigid, depending on the need of the hour, to ensure that its interests remain protected and it contributes towards nation building. 'We need to provide a vibrant ecosystem for Alternative Dispute Resolution, which includes arbitration, mediation and conciliation. This will offer additional convenience to investors and businessmen. More importantly, it will reduce the burden of cases on Indian courts,' the Minister said. Terming arbitration as part of Indian culture, Mr. Meghwal said that the concept got 'distorted' somewhere down the line and other countries became the hub of international arbitration. 'India will soon emerge as the new hub of international arbitration,' he added. The Minister's remarks came after ONGC Chairman Arun Kumar Singh pointed out that there is a need to make the procedure of arbitration 'time-bound', which is quintessential for the business ecosystem. He also said that the arbitration should be 'more corporate' and 'less legal'. Pointing out the government's efforts to make arbitration faster and easier, Law Secretary Anju Rathi Rana said that a recent directive from the Department of Legal Affairs pushes for reducing judicial interventions and using institutional and not ad hoc arbitration. Chairman of India International Arbitration Centre, Justice (retd) Hemant Gupta, pushed for a change in the mindsets of parties to go for institutional arbitration, rather than an ad hoc system to settle commercial disputes.
