Burkina leader's 'anti-West speech' is AI generated

"Best speech of the 21st century. If Captain Traore wins this time, not only Burkina Faso, but the whole of Africa will win," says a Bengali-language Facebook post on May 28, 2025.
The accompanying video, which has racked up more than 1.9 million views, purportedly shows Traore attacking Western propaganda, exposing media lies and declaring a new era for Africa.
"The Africa you showed us wasn't real. The story you told us was a lie. The fate you imposed on us was a script you had written for years," he says in English, apparently referring to multiple news organisations.
"You're not free press, you're corporate press, your bosses are billionaires."
Since Traore swept into power, Burkina Faso has turned away from former colonial master France and moved closer to Russia (archived link).
A steady stream of viral social media posts -- many misleading or outright false -- has portrayed him as a fearless reformer who defied Western powers and reclaimed his country's dignity.
The AI footage also surfaced in posts from South Africa and Kenya.
A reverse image search on Google using keyframes found it earlier posted on YouTube on May 25, 2025 with a note that it was "entirely fictional" (archived link).
The platform has marked the clip as "altered or synthetic content" while the channel has previously uploaded AI clips of Traore (archived link).
An analysis of the circulating footage spotted visual errors that are hallmarks of AI. The fingernails on Traore's hands disappear at the 6:30 mark and his hand blurs at the 11:55 mark.
Despite the meteoric rise in generative AI, errors persist and checking them is one way to tell the content is not genuine.
AFP has debunked more misinformation around Traore here and here.

China ready to drop all tariffs on African imports

China has said it is ready to drop the tariffs it charges on imports from all 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic relations. The move, announced at a China-Africa co-operation meeting, comes as the continent is facing the possibility of increased tariffs on its products entering the US. China is Africa's largest trading partner – a position it has held for the last 15 years – with Africa exporting goods to the Asian nation worth around $170bn (£125bn) in 2023. A joint ministerial statement criticised "certain countries' [efforts to] disrupt the existing international economic and trade order" through the unilateral imposition of tariffs. It then called on the US to resolve trade disputes on the basis of "equality, respect and mutual benefit". The zero-tariff move, when implemented, will be an extension of the deal made last year for China to drop tariffs on goods from 33 African nations classified as "least developed". The expanded list will include some of China's largest trading partners on the continent, including South Africa and Nigeria. China has not said when the decision will come into effect. Eswatini is the only African state excluded from the s zero-tariff announcement as it recognises Taiwan as an independent country, whereas China regards it as a breakaway province. China currently imports a lot of raw materials from Africa, notably from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Guinea. In April, President Donald Trump caused consternation among US trading partners by announcing high tariffs on its imports form many countries, including a 50% rate for Lesotho, 30% for South Africa and 14% for Nigeria. How jeans and diamonds pushed Lesotho to the top of Trump's tariffs list The implementation has been paused until next month, though the temporary halt could be extended further for countries that are negotiating "in good faith", according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. In 2024, the US imported $39.5bn-worth of goods from Africa. Some of that was brought in under the zero-tariff deal known as the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) which now looks under threat if the Trump administration goes ahead with the imposition of fresh charges. Ukrainian intelligence explains how Russia shapes African elite loyal to Kremlin

Russia is increasing its presence on the African continent, using educational and youth programmes as a tool for long-term influence. Source: Major Andrii Yusov, spokesperson for Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU), quoted by DIU's press service Quote: "African education and sport are increasingly being used by the aggressor state as instruments of hybrid influence with a view to forming a new generation of political and managerial elites loyal to the Kremlin." Details: To this end, Russia consistently allocates state-funded university quotas for citizens of African countries, primarily in agriculture, engineering, education and medicine. Yusov said that leading African universities are planning to launch Russian language courses and professional development programmes for teachers. In the future, educational programmes will be aligned with Russian standards. According to the Kremlin's plan, this will allow Russian narratives to become firmly established in the education systems of African countries, DIU reports. The Russians are paying particular attention to working with young people through sports initiatives. Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!
