Wildlife dept recovers black bear
According to the Wildlife Department, the operation in the Bhalwal area of Sargodha led to the recovery of a male black bear that was being kept in illegal captivity. The bear has been relocated to the Wildlife Park in Joharabad.
The suspect was caught red-handed and has been taken into custody, with legal proceedings now underway.
In a separate operation in the D.G. Khan region, wildlife rangers acted swiftly on reports of illegal wild boar hunting using dogs.
Two individuals were arrested on the spot and fined Rs30,000.
Chief Wildlife Ranger Mubeen Elahi stated that the department's combing operations will continue uninterrupted as part of its broader conservation efforts.
He assured that the wildlife rangers are fully supported by the department and should continue their duties without fear or hesitation.
The Wildlife Department further reported that a total of 13 black bears have so far been rescued from various locations during recent enforcement actions.
All animals have been transferred to designated rescue centers and secure facilities.

The protesters shouted slogans against the incident and set a dispensary on fire. In the meanwhile, the shooting broke out in which three people died on the spot. Later two more injured succumbed to their wounds while on way to a hospital. Police sources said that 17 injured were taken to a local hospital but six of them were later shifted to Peshawar hospitals and seven to Orakzai district. Fifteen injured were identified as Ajmal, Abdul Halim, Ayub Khan, Siraj, Jartaj, Baitullah, Aamir Hassan, Rehmanullah, Muhammad Sadiq, Nazar Muhammad and Abu Bakar — all residents of Zakhakhel — Khan Zeb and Muhammad Javed of Shlobar; and Sher Zaman, Qasim, and Saeed Khan of Malk Din Khel. Later, the tribal elders met with security officials and presented their demands: case against those involved in the death of the girl; vacation of the occupied houses of local citizens, end to unnecessary harassment at the security check posts and financial assistance to the families of the deceased. The security forces' agreed to Rs1.5 million compensation to the families of each deceased and Rs200,000 assistance to each injured. After a partial agreement on the demands, the protesters ended the protest, and the situation started to return to normalcy. In Islamabad, meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the martyrdom of innocent and peaceful citizens due to the firing from Fitna al-Khawarij and directed the authorities concerned to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured. K-P Chief Minister Gandapur also expressed deep sorrow and grief over the Tirah incident and announced financial assistance of Rs10 million for the heirs of each deceased and Rs2.5 million for each injured, according to an Express News report. The chief minister called a Peshawar Jirga, consisting of tribal elders and public representatives so that local sentiments and concerns could be heard. He directed the district administration and the institutions to strengthen public communication and maintain order. Gandapur said that a series of jirgas of tribal elders would start from next week at the divisional and then provincial levels. Consumers pay bitter price for sweetener

Photo: file Due to a lack of government attention, sugar prices have skyrocketed across the country, with an increase of up to Rs60 per kilogram at the retail level. Experts believe that the artificial sugar shortage is a direct result of inaccurate data and flawed decisions by federal institutions concerning sugar production and consumption. In the midst of this crisis, sugar profiteers have become active once again, manipulating prices in major markets across Lahore. The government's weak control has allowed profiteers to exploit the public, which is forced to buy sugar at inflated rates. In 2024, sugar was selling at Rs140 to Rs145 per kilo, but it is now being sold for Rs190 to Rs200 per kilo. The official DC rate remains at Rs145, but no retailer is selling at this price. Retailers argue that they themselves are getting sugar at higher prices. According to Sheikh Tanveer, the price of a 100kg sugar sack was Rs12,000 last year, but due to poor planning, it has now soared to Rs18,000 at the ex-mill rate. "Retailers make little profit, while the real beneficiaries are mill owners and sugar profiteers," said Tanveer. Even though the government claims to maintain complete records of sugar production and consumption, a crisis occurs every year. Citizens claim that due to poor government policies, they are forced to spend their hard-earned money buying sugar at inflated rates. This time, the price hike is not minimal, adding up to Rs40 per kilo. One citizen demanded that the Prime Minister take notice and act against those responsible. "But nothing ever happens in this country," he added. "Inflation robs us in broad daylight. It is the government's responsibility to control prices, yet no department seems to be doing anything," lamented the local. Sources have revealed that the same profiteers, who were previously targeted by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) with full force, including arrests and record seizures, are once again operating in an organized manner, as they dominate future sugar pricing, especially in markets like Lahore's Akbari Mandi and Karachi's Jodia Bazaar. The FIA had previously launched a strong crackdown, but suddenly and without explanation, the operation was called off. It is unclear whether this was due to the influence of powerful profiteers or fear within the government, but sources claim officials made personal gains during the process. Till date, not a single sugar profiteer has been brought under the law. According to the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association, the country produced 6.8 million tonnes of sugar during 20242025, which was 3 per cent more than the previous year. There was already a surplus of 7 million tonnes last year, prompting the government to allow exports. Despite sufficient availability, hoarders are now creating an artificial shortage once again, pushing sugar prices up to Rs200 per kilo. Currently, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) representatives have been deployed at sugar mills to prevent tax evasion. According to the FBR, this has improved tax recovery. Additionally, joint raids by the FBR and Intelligence Bureau are being conducted against hoarders across the country to stabilize prices. While there was no price hike during Ramadan, sugar prices have surged once again across the country. However, beyond targeting hoarders, no action has been taken against the profiteers responsible for driving up prices. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Food is preparing to spend valuable foreign exchange on sugar imports. Tendering has already begun, though the next sugarcane crushing season is scheduled to start in November. In this entire scenario, billions of rupees are being drained from the pockets of the poor, while neither the government nor the bureaucracy seems affected.

Court orders exhumation of newlywed victim's body
A court in Rawalpindi has ordered the exhumation of the 17-year-old newlywed honour killing victim's grave. The exhumation is scheduled for early morning on Monday, July 28. Sidra Bibi was allegedly murdered in the name of 'honour' in the Pirwadhai area of Rawalpindi. Civil Judge Qamar Basit Tarar ordered the exhumation. The judge will personally oversee the process. The unidentified grave will be located with the help of the arrested gravedigger, the cemetery secretary, and the rickshaw driver who transported the body. Workers from the municipal corporation will carry out the exhumation, while a team of doctors from Holy Family Hospital will conduct the post-mortem. Three suspects — gravedigger Rashid Mehmood, cemetery secretary Saifullah, and rickshaw driver Khayal Muhammad — have been remanded into police custody for three days. The court has rejected a plea by Sidra's parents to stop the exhumation, stating that the truth can only be revealed through a post-mortem. Serious charges including murder, desecration of a corpse, and evidence tampering have been added. According to investigators, Sidra was initially smothered with a pillow and then strangled. Her body was kept in a rickshaw for two hours during heavy rain and buried without a shroud or funeral prayers. Gravedigger Rashid confessed to receiving Rs20,000 to bury her secretly. Police have named 32 suspects in the case, including tribal council head Ismatullah, the victim's parents Arab Gul and Bafar Bibi, her husband Ziaur Rehman and other family members and tribal elders. Crucial evidence was recovered from the Pirwadhai cemetery office, including tampered records and surveillance footage showing the body wrapped in plastic. According to sources connected to the police investigation, Sidra, the wife of Ziaur Rehman, went missing from her home on July 11 following domestic disputes. Ismatullah, a trader leader from Bara Market, along with Sidra's father Arab Gul and husband Ziaur Rehman, are all relatives. After Sidra disappeared, her husband and parents suspected she had a connection with a man named Usman. Acting on this suspicion, they went to Usman's house in the same area, but neither he nor Sidra were found there. On the night of July 16, Ismatullah, Sidra's father, her brother, and others traveled to Muzaffarabad. There, through a jirga and persuasion, they managed to bring Sidra back to Rawalpindi. Upon her return, a jirga was held at the home of her husband Ziaur Rehman, attended by her father Arab Gul, father-in-law Saleh Muhammad, and other relatives. The jirga was allegedly led by Ismatullah, a trader from Bara Market and a family associate. In the early hours of July 17, the jirga declared that Sidra had "lost her right to live" by leaving her home without permission. Acting on this verdict, her father, brother, and paternal uncle-in-law reportedly took her into a room and suffocated her to death using a pillow.
