The 65p baking ingredient that is being used to rewrite athletics' record books

Daily Mirror18-07-2025
New technology that sees star runners ingest bicarbonate of soda in a jelly-like substance is shaving seconds off finishing times with founder of British based company Flycarb explaining science
The vital ingredient to track and field's record books being rewritten again this summer is a 65p baking product.

And at the London Stadium's warm-up track on Saturday afternoon the world 's best athletes will be slurping it down in gel form from plastic pots. Nevermind the fact many say it tastes like wallpaper paste and has some racing for the toilet bowl faster than the finish line.

Bicarbonate of soda, essential to giving cakes their texture, is improving performances by up to two per cent.

'It just helps with that little edge we're all looking for,' says Josh Carr, the co-founder of British start-up Flycarb. 'When you're pushing really hard you can go a little bit longer. At the elite level pretty much everyone is taking it and it's a significant factor in the times we're seeing, particularly in the middle-distance events.'
The science is simple: bicarb slows down lactic acid build up in the muscles, ensuring athletes can push harder for longer.
Its use in sport has been around for decades - especially in cycling. But the difference now is that scientists have significantly reduced the risk of gastro distress by developing a new way to absorb it.

'It's not new, it's how we take it that's new,' explains Jack Gray, Flycarb's other founder. 'And being able to take it without those side effects means it's a no brainer, basically.'
Swedish brand Maurten made the significant leap by developing a hydrogel that surrounds the bicarb. From marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum down to British 800m superstar Keely Hodgkinson, the list of champions to have praised its impact since its launch three years ago is lengthy.
'I'd always heard horror stories about bicarb, people getting it wrong, so I was a bit 'Oh, what if it does that to me?'' Hodgkinson said shortly before winning silver at the 2023 World Championships. 'But I've never had a problem with it.'

In Paris last summer she was slurping it down before storming to gold, so too clubmate Georgia Hunter-Bell ahead of her storming run to 1500m bronze.
'In the 80s people would head to the supermarket, stick the bicarb in water, drink it and it would come out both ends pretty violently,' Carr adds. 'But we have almost zero complaints about GI distress now.'

Flycarb and Mnstry, a German company more established in cycling, have joined a burgeoning consumer market with the latter recently bringing a tablet version to the public.
And its success is beginning to filter down to the grassroots with more and more club runners slurping it down a couple of hours before competing.
Gray's advice is resist all urge to chew – that would negate the gel's protection against tummy troubles – and then watch your personal bests tumble. 'In terms of the marginal gains, as Team Sky popularised it, alongside caffeine it's probably the biggest you can get,' he adds.

However, Itauma is set to face his toughest test yet as he'll be stepping into the ring with former veteran Dillian Whyte. The Body Snatcher, 37, has been one of the most popular and dangerous heavyweights of the last decade and has signature wins over Alexander Povetkin, Derek Chisora and Joseph Parker. But following a drugs ban, Whyte has scored two unconvincing wins against Christian Hammer and Ebenezer Tetter, as well as withdrawing from fights against Joe Joyce and Lawrence Okolie. It's a massive crossroads fights for both men, with fans eager to know whether a win over the undefeated Itauma would see Whyte become a contender once again. What belts are on the line? To put it simply, none. The minor belts are of secondary concern in this one - Moses Itauma will hold onto his WBA and WBO Intercontinental belts, whatever the outcome of the fight. However, the result will have massive ramifications for both fighters. Victory for Itauma would solidify his position as a top heavyweight contender and potentially move him closer to a shot at Oleksandr Usyk's world title. Whereas, a win for Whyte adds to the rebuild of his career and would demonstrate that he is still a force at this elite level - a defeat could leave him staring at retirement. Daniel Dubois is serving suspension after brutal Oleksandr Usyk defeat

The former world champion suffered an agonising defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in front of over 90,000 fans last month and is believed to be serving a suspension Daniel Dubois is currently serving a suspension from the British Boxing Board of Control - due to expire next month - following his crushing defeat to Oleksandr Usyk. ‌ The pair went head-to-head in a historic showdown at Wembley Stadium in London last month - two years on from their first dust-up. Usyk would go on to score a dominant knockout in the ninth round, but the fight was not without drama after the Ukrainian was sent crashing to the canvas in the fifth round. However, Dubois' shot was deemed to be a 'low blow' - much to the frustration of the Brit's team. ‌ Their rematch was a little more one-sided. Usyk would go on to drop 'Triple D' in the fifth round before delivering a brutal knockout blow just seconds later. Not only did the 'Cat' pick up his second in over Dubois, but he also became an undisputed champion at heavyweight for the second time of his career. ‌ After taking quite a fair bit of damage from the rematch, Dubois is currently serving a suspension by the British Boxing Board of Control - as per Boxrec's website. The suspension ends on September 2 - meaning he will be able to return to training after the aforementioned date. This week, it was revealed that the pair have both turned in negative doping tests following their heavyweight sequel. As is the case with any fight, both fighters were subject to doping tests after the contest in London. The WBC revealed earlier this week that the results from the pair have come back negative. The WBC wrote on its official website: "The Clean Boxing Program has announced that all doping tests for both fighters have come back negative. "The second fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois ended in a stunning fashion at Wembley Stadium in London, England. The Ukrainian champion delivered a powerful knockout against the British fighter in front of his home crowd, allowing Usyk to retain the heavyweight belts and reclaim the title that Dubois had held. "VADA, the independent agency that conducts the anti-doping tests for the Clean Boxing Program, reported the conclusion of the process, solidifying the victory and legacy of the undisputed Ukrainian champion. The 'Clean Boxing Program' was implemented in 2016 to conduct doping tests in the WBC. The WBC has an agreement with VADA, the association responsible for sample collection, chain of custody, and laboratory analysis." Team Dubois sent shockwaves around the boxing community just weeks after the rematch after it was revealed the Brit's coach Kieran Farrell has left the heavyweight's team. Farrell joined head trainer Don Charles last year and was in his corner for his victories over Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua. ‌ And as Dubois attempts to rebuild his career, Farrell had decided to leave. In a statement posted to social media, he said: "I have made the decision to part ways with Team Dubois. In the 18 months with DDD we've achieved so much including an unforgettable night at Wembley, helping DDD become world champion has been truly rewarding on a number of levels. I wish Daniel all the best going forward." When is Daniel Dubois' next fight? It remains to be seen what is next for the former world champion, but it is expected that he will take the rest of the year to rest and assess his options going forward. Despite suffering the third defeat of his career against Usyk, Dubois still has a lot left to give the sport. Speaking about Dubois' future, his promoter Frank Warren said: "He has got to learn from it. He is only 27. I look at Frank Bruno for example, three times he fought for a world title and he got it on the fourth attempt," Warren said. "Daniel has won a world title so hopefully he will come back, but the bottom line is it was Usyk's night and he is a special, special boxer." The promoter added: "That is what Daniel needs to learn from this fight, to try and learn and develop the mental attitude that Usyk has. Daniel didn't stick to the task, he got careless, he dropped his hands and paid the price."

"He's been involved with Brighton in pre-season, and we'll have to see in training where he's at," Sheehan said. "We might have to integrate him into it. "But I imagine he could come into the squad on Saturday." Article continues below Kone joins QPR Former Swansea City transfer target Richard Kone has completed a move to Queens Park Rangers for an undisclosed fee. Sources close to negotiations claimed the 22-year-old was the subject of two failed bids from the Swans earlier in the summer, while Preston North End and Toulouse were also believed to have had bids knocked back. Swansea were initially expected to return with a third bid, but substantially cooled their interest in search of other targets. ‌ Leicester City were another side to admire the Ivorian, but failed to firm up their interest with a bid, opening the door for a move to Loftus Road. "It's an amazing feeling, I'm really glad to join an amazing team, a great club. I can't wait to get started," Kone told the club's website. "I made my mind when the opportunity comes, I'll be ready. I'll be ready to take it. By God's grace, it took the time that it took, four years, and when the time was right, I did take my chances and here I am." ‌ 'No offer' for Sylla amid bizarre scandal Swansea City are reportedly yet to make a concrete offer for alleged target Moussa Sylla. Reports in France claim Swansea, Sevilla, Valencia, and Angers have all expressed an interest in the Schalke forward, but German publication Bild says there's currently nothing on the table. The same publication is also tracking a bizarre scandal involving the 25-year-old and his dog. ‌ It's claimed Sylla left his Staffordshire Bull Terrier, 'Ghost', with a dog-sitter at the Albert Schweitzer Animal Shelter in Essen earlier this month, and has since refused to take the dog back, allegedly stating he "unfortunately no longer had any use" for it. Sylla has vehemently denied those allegations, and hit back with a statement through French lawyer Dylan Bourkab. "For several days, Mr. Moussa Sylla and his family have been the target of a media campaign based on false, distorted and out-of-context information," the statement read.
