Paul Merson has telling response to Arsenal or Spurs 'better season' question
Paul Merson has suggested that Tottenham may have had a better season than Arsenal after landing the Europa League whilst the Gunners remain trophyless since 2020
Paul Merson has confessed that it is "all about winning trophies" as he was asked to determine who'd had the better season, Tottenham or Arsenal in light of the Europa League final. Those on the white side of north London are currently basking in European glory.
They downed Manchester United in Bilbao, ending a 17-year trophy drought in the process. Their European form has covered for an horrendous Premier League season, which has them down in 17th. However the capture of a trophy has changed the narrative.
Arsenal meanwhile, who completed a league double over Tottenham, have finished second and reached the last four of the Champions League. However their wait for silverware, which goes back to 2020, has rolled over after they fell short again.
Mikel Arteta's side struggled to mount a genuine title charge and the Spaniard is coming under increasing pressure to deliver given the investment he's had in his squad. Tottenham are currently enjoying some bragging rights following the Europa League final.
And now Merson has suggested that landing a trophy means that those in white may be able to boast about having the better year despite Arsenal sitting 15 places and 33 points ahead of their neighbours.
He told Sky Sports: "Who's the best Messi or Ronaldo? Split it down the middle. For me it is all about winning trophies, I played to win trophies. I was in teams to win trophies, not come second, third or fourth. When you're at top clubs are you're not winning trophies it becomes a disappointment. Split everybody down the middle.
"They had a great week Tottenham, but Arsenal have had a good season, getting to the semi-finals and finishing second but they haven't won anything. For me, it is all about winning."
Arteta, who congratulated Tottenham on their success, was quizzed on whether their local rivals had enjoyed a better year, but refused to be drawn on such comparisons. "I don't like to compare with other teams," he said. "I need to analyse my team - that's my job".
The Arsenal boss has recently had to defend the lack of silverware that's arrived at the Emirates. Their last trophy was the FA Cup. Their last Premier League triumph was 2004. But Arteta has said: "Winning trophies as well is about being in the right moment, in the right place."

Chelsea sent message by Dortmund over failed Jamie Gittens transfer
Borussia Dortmund have left the door open for Chelsea to make another attempt to sign Jamie Gittens this summer. Chelsea held advanced talks with Dortmund over a deal for the 20-year-old before the transfer window closed on Tuesday night. But after Chelsea's initial €35 million (£29.5m) bid was rejected, their follow up offer of €50m (£42.2m) was also turned down by the Bundesliga side. It's understood that Dortmund were holding out for a €65m (£54.9m) fee for Gittens, who has now been named in their Club World Cup squad. Dortmund will play Brazilian side Fluminense, South Korea's Ulsan HD and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in Group F. Jonny Evans makes surprise announcement on future after Man Utd release him
Jonny Evans has been released by Manchester United and the defender remains uncertain about what could come next in his career when he leaves the Red Devils this month Jonny Evans is in no rush to make a decision on his future after it was confirmed he would be released by Manchester United. The defender is set to see his contract expire at the end of the month with no renewal forthcoming. But despite the 37-year-old being firmly in the twilight of his career, no official announcement on a retirement has arrived, though he is expected to do so. The Northern Irish defender is set to reflect on his situation before making a decision over his next steps. Evans is set to end his second spell at Old Trafford having returned to the club in 2023 to take on a senior role in the dressing room and to provide additional depth in United's backline. The veteran probably played more than anticipated making 30 appearances in his first season back to see his contract extended by a further year. Evans was called upon less frequently last term in a difficult season and joins the likes of Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof in exiting the club. Tom Heaton remains in discussions over potentially extending his stay. It had been suggested Evans' departure could mark the end of his career, after Evans noted 'It was stay here or retire' last summer. The defender is yet to make plans however. "I'm not sure yet," Evans told BBC Sport NI when asked about his future . "I'll take a bit of time. I don't feel like I'm in a rush to do anything." In his eight years away from Manchester, Evans spent three years at West Bromwich Albion and five years at Leicester. The central defender added an FA Cup victory in 2021 to three Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and two League Cup success across his two stints with the Red Devils. Evans earned 107 caps for Northern Ireland and provided some analysis on where the nation stands during his appearance on BBC. The ex-Sunderland loanee is hopeful his former boss, Michael O'Neill can lead the country to World Cup qualification. "When you've got Michael O'Neill in charge, he gives everyone a little bit of hope," said Evans, "He's taken the team to a major tournament before and if you want anyone in charge, it's him. "When I look at this team it reminds me of ourselves. He's playing five at the back and he has Isaac Price, he's on a good run of form. "You look throughout the team, you see Dan Ballard and Trai Hume getting promoted, they'll be playing Premier League football and that'll only be good for the team. I'm excited.
