'Cracking' Idea: Now Report Mumbai Potholes In 5 Clicks As BMC Unveils Smart App And Chatbot
Last Updated: BMC has launched a mobile application called Pothole QuickFix, along with a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot to make pothole reporting faster, easier, and more transparent for citizens With the monsoon clouds back over Mumbai, so is a familiar nightmare for residents— potholes. Every year, the city's roads crack, cave, and crumble under heavy rains, turning daily commutes into dangerous, frustrating journeys. But this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) says it is ready with a smarter solution. To address the pothole menace swiftly and efficiently, the BMC has launched a mobile application called Pothole QuickFix, along with a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot (number: 8999228999). Both platforms aim to make pothole reporting faster, easier, and more transparent for citizens. The app was launched on June 9 by BMC commissioner and administrator Bhushan Gagrani. It is now live on both Android and iOS platforms and offers a simple, user-friendly interface. Citizens can click a photo of a pothole, tag the location, add a short description, and submit the complaint—all in under five clicks. Once a complaint is filed, it goes directly to the concerned department, triggering the repair process immediately. The app also allows users to track the status of their complaint, check estimated repair times, and even give feedback once the work is completed. If users are unhappy with the response, they can reopen the complaint. The BMC has set a clear target: fix potholes within 48 hours of complaint registration. If a pothole isn't fixed on time, the issue is escalated to senior officials for urgent action. Citizens also receive SMS updates about the progress and final closure of their complaints. Apart from the app, residents can also use the WhatsApp chatbot by sending keywords like 'Pothole" or 'PT" (in English), and 'खड्डा" or 'ख" (in Marathi) to the BMC number. This offers another easy way to raise complaints, especially for those not using the app. This initiative is part of the Smart Mumbai campaign, aimed at using digital tools to improve public services. 'Mumbai's citizens deserve safe roads and efficient services. The app empowers them to hold the system accountable," said additional municipal commissioner (projects) Abhijit Bangar. Year after year, Mumbaikars face the same problem—pothole-ridden roads causing traffic jams, vehicle damage, and even accidents. Many have often felt helpless, with no simple way to report or follow up on road issues. Officials say the BMC's new tech-driven approach is a significant shift in giving the public a voice and bringing speed to road repairs. About the Author Mayuresh Ganapatye First Published:

BMC launches new mobile app for residents to raise pothole issue
To combat the issue of pothole menace in Mumbai during the monsoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday launched a new mobile application — My Pothole Quick Fix — through which residents can raise complaints over potholes with the civic body. The new application is an upgraded version of the 'MyBMC pothole fix it' application launched in 2019 for addressing pothole woes. Civic officials said that the new application is more user-friendly and has a slick interface, making the job of lodging complaints easier. 'The previous edition of the application would include seven-eight steps for registering a complaint. In the latest edition, citizens can lodge complaints in two-three steps,' said Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects). The officials said that each complaint will be addressed within 48 hours. Bangar said that the new application will require citizens to upload photographs along with geo-tagged locations. Following this, the complaint will be directed to the road department which will direct the local ward officials to locate the pothole and fix it. Civic authorities said that they will be using cold mix or a mixture of tar and stone chips for filling potholes on asphalt roads. The complainant will also be able to track the total time taken to resolve the issue. The residents can also escalate the issue if they find that the problem is not being fixed for a long period. The application is available on Android and iOS systems for download. The civic authorities have also launched a WhatsApp chatbot for registering pothole-related problems. In the number 8999228999, citizens can register complaints with Marathi keywords like 'Khadda' or English keywords like 'Pothole' or PT.

Goa introduces mandatory orientation on road safety before issuing new driving licences
According to data from the state's transport department, 300-350 people die due to road accidents in Goa every year. Many of these cases concern rash driving. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant launched the programme recently amid a rise in the number of road deaths in the coastal state, they said. Panaji, June 6 (PTI) The Goa government has introduced a mandatory orientation programme on road safety for citizens seeking a new driving licence in the state, a move aimed at stemming motor accidents and fatalities, officials have said. The 45-minute-long orientation programme has been introduced in collaboration with social impact organisations BharatCares and CSR Box, and Diageo India, officials said. Project coordinator Dhanraj Chouhan, who is from BharatCares, told PTI Videos that the programme has been aptly named 'Wrong Side of The Road' (WSOTR). It has been implemented across all seven Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the state, he said. 'WSOTR is more than just a road safety programme. It is a behavioural change movement. Through immersive and tech-enabled modules, we are helping citizens understand the real dangers of being on the wrong side of the road and also drunk driving,' he said. His organisation has established more than 85 road safety labs across the country, said Chouhan. Assistant Director of Transport Department, Oswin E Carvalho, said the orientation programme is mandatory for citizens seeking a fresh learner's licence as well as those coming for renewal of their driving licences. In this programme, candidates are informed about the use of safety belts and helmets, and how to drive and be safe on roads, he said. Licence seekers are also given updates about new road signs. He said that the information is given in Marathi, English, and Hindi, with each brief lasting 15 minutes. Bhushan Gaonkar of Chorao village underwent the orientation at the RTO in Panaji on Wednesday. 'It is a good initiative by the government. They educated people about the ill effects of drunk driving,' he said. PTI RPS NR This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.
