Crucially, there's such a complete divide between the outies and innies that neither have any memory of the other's actions. One of the show's enduring questions is whether or not they should be treated as two separate people, but for all intents and purposes, that's how the actors have to play it.
That holds especially true for Lower, whose rebellious innie Helly would happily burn Lumon to the ground. Unfortunately, her outie, Helena, is a committed member of its terrifying ruling family. Helly's fiery temperament couldn't contrast more with Helena's icy cool — a jarring revelation for them both, to say the least. For Lower, though, playing two such different characters in the same bizarro world must be the juiciest kind of acting challenge.
(Before we continue, here's your requisite SPOILER WARNING: If you're not completely caught up on the second season of 'Severance' and want to be before knowing at least one of its twists, turn back now!)

(You're still here! You sure?)
(Okay, cool. Here we go.)
In 'Woe's Hollow,' Turturro's Irving realizes that Helena's been tricking the group into thinking she's Helly, whom we apparently haven't seen this season at all. Like her predecessors in the 'Parent Trap,' Lower's been playing us by playing the double-layered character of Helena pretending to be Helly — and to be honest, it wasn't a
complete
shock.
That's not to take anything away from Lower's performance. In fact, it speaks to the subtle work Lower did that Helena's restraint pushed through the 'Helly' veneer enough to raise viewers' alarm bells before Irving's went off. As he got closer to the truth, Lower let Helena peek through bit by bit until her hard stare finally cracked under the pressure.
'Severance' is only ramping up its science fiction elements and raising more questions in season 2; the show could easily lean so far into lore that it spins right off its own axis. That makes it doubly important for the main characters to feel authentic, and in turn, for canny actors like Lower to keep them grounded.

The Creator of ‘Severance' Just Explained a Key Logistical Question

When it comes to Severance, there are rarely simple answers. Everything is wrapped in mystery and intrigue. Which, admittedly, is kind of the best part about it. We love to explore and speculate about what's going on at Lumon. And yet, getting an answer, even a small one, here and there is nice. Which is what the creator of the show, Dan Erickson, just did. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Erickson dodged questions about big topics like the structure of season three or the ultimate length of the series but did definitely answer a question about the logistics and mechanics of the boundaries of a severed person. Basically, he's asked how Ms. Casey transformed into Gemma by leaving through the emergency door, but Mark and the rest of the Innies have to take an elevator up/down several floors to do the same. Where's the line? What's the boundary? 'So, yeah, this is actually also—this is a whole section (in the show bible) of how exactly that the severance threshold works,' Erickson said. 'And basically the company can build it however they want. And the idea is that there sort of is just a section—if you were to dig through the wall of the severed floor, you would eventually reach a point where you're beyond the threshold and you're no longer within that space where your Innie is being activated. And so, they would have basically just designed it where that doorway is, where the cutoff point is.' Which, logistically, is a little wonky, but we buy it. The emergency door was down a long hallway, so maybe that hallway goes beyond the boundaries of the elevator, just on a different axis. Either way, we love that he's thought about this and had an answer. There are a few other answers at the interview, including confirmation that Erickson does, at times, read Reddit theories. Click here to check it out. Severance season three has been in the works for several months now and, it seems, may start production soon. Fingers crossed maybe it hits Apple TV+ next year, or at the very latest, early the year after. Want more io9 news? Apple Acquires Sports Comedy Feature THE DINK Featuring All-Star Cast Led by Jake Johnson and Ben Stiller — GeekTyrant

Apple has picked up the rights to the sports comedy The Dink , directed by Josh Greenbaum (upcoming Spaceballs 2 ) and starring Jake Johnson ( New Girl ). Ben Stiller is on board as a producer and co-star, alongside an all-star cast that includes tennis champions Andy Roddick and John McEnroe, as well as Mary Steenburgen, Ed Harris, Chloe Fineman, Aaron Chen, Patton Oswalt, Chris Parnell and Christine Taylor. Details as to the release plan, including whether the film will hit theaters in addition to streaming, have not yet been disclosed. Written by Sean Clements, The Dink stars Johnson as a washed-up tennis pro who, desperate to save a struggling club and earn his father's respect, is compelled to break a sacred vow and do the unthinkable: play pickleball. The project reunites Apple with Stiller amid his work on Severance , the fan-favorite dystopian thriller series which recently landed 27 Emmy nominations — the most of any show this year — including Outstanding Drama series. Apple will also serve as the distributor for Stiller & Meara: Nothing is Lost , Stiller's intergenerational documentary passion project looking at the lives of his late comedy icon parents, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. Johnson, meanwhile, is set to star alongside Tatiana Maslany in Apple's upcoming comedic thriller series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed . via: Deadline

Ben Stiller just delivered a 'Severance' season 3 update bombshell

The tension is palpable as we wait for "Severance" season 3. We've had executive producer and director Ben Stiller announce that "Severance" season 3 is coming "as fast as possible." We've had an Apple TV executive come out and say that season 3 hasn't begun production. Then, just last week, show star Adam Scott revealed that whenever the show does begin production, it could take six weeks just to film a single episode and half a year to film a full season. But this latest update is a real bombshell. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Stiller revealed that he won't be directing episodes for season 3. Instead, he'll be helming a feature-length film about the true story of a downed airman in occupied France during World War II and the airman's subsequent involvement in the French Resistance. That's on top of his plans to make a movie adapting Rachel Maddow's podcast "Bag Man" about disgraced Nixon-era U.S. Vice President Spiro Agnew, and existing projects "Focker-in-Law" and "Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost." 7 day free trial! Apple TV Plus gives you access to amazing originals with exciting new shows dropping all summer long. 'These things take time to come together,' Stiller told the L.A. Times, referring to the various projects he's balancing, including an in-development HBO comedy-drama 'The Band.' "And the older you get, the more you realize that you only have so much time.' I'm not going anywhere. We have incredible directors and a team that creates the show. I love directing it and look forward to at some point again for sure. I feel like season 3 is going to be the best yet as we continue to evolve. That's a massive development for "Severance" season 3, and frankly, the Apple TV Plus sci-fi series as a whole. Stiller has been a prolific director on the Emmy-nominated show, directing six episodes in "Severance" season 1 and five episodes in "Severance" season 2. In each season, he's directed both the season premiere and the finale, meaning his directorial stamp on the show is a defining one. He's been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series each season, and could still win for season 2's finale, "Cold Harbor." Stiller has since taken to X (Twitter) to clarify the news that he'd be absent from the director's chair next season. "It's been full-time the last 8 months working on season 3," he replied in response to a tweet from fan account Severance Updates. "And I'm not going anywhere. We have incredible directors and a team that creates the show. I love directing it and look forward to at some point again for sure. I feel like season 3 is going to be the best yet as we continue to evolve." To be fair, some of the show's most acclaimed episodes weren't directed by Stiller. Jessica Lee Gagné just earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for season 2, episode 7, "Chikhai Bardo," meaning she could even beat Stiller for the award later this year. But it's tough to imagine a world where replacing the director of 11 of the show's 19 episodes is easy, let alone producing a similar product. Even if season 3 is as good (or better!) than season 2 without Stiller directing, I would bet money on the show not feeling the same.
