Middlesex wear down Northants to seal innings win
Middlesex's bowlers wore down heroic Northamptonshire resistance to close out an emphatic victory by an innings and 107 runs deep into the final session of day four at Merchant Taylors' School.Rob Keogh defied the hosts attack for almost five hours despite being struck for a second time on the finger he damaged while fielding on day one to make a gutsy unbeaten 61, while Saif Zaib also battled through pain to add 44 to his 82 of the first innings. There was even a last-wicket stand of 47 between Keogh and Yuzvendra Chahal to further frustrate the Seaxes, but in the end for Ryan Higgins' 3-54 (seven in the match) and a maiden first-class wicket for Ben Geddes bowled out the visitors for 257.Northamptonshire's hopes of frustrating the host's victory push were dealt an early blow when Lewis McManus, having played one delicious extra cover drive tried to leave a ball from Roland-Jones, only for it to cannon off the under edge and send his off-stump cartwheeling. One wicket became two in the next over, Tom Helm beating George Bartlett twice in successive balls before banging in a short one which the batter skied obligingly to Roland-Jones at mid-on.Much now rested on the shoulders of all-rounders Zaib and Keogh. Zaib picked up where he'd left off in the first innings, Keogh meanwhile took 18 balls to get off the mark and was then struck on his already damaged digit by a ball from Higgins but carried on after lengthy treatmentDeprived of spinner Zafar Gohar due to the arm injury picked up fielding on day three and with a soft Kookaburra ball offering no help to the Middlesex seamers, the stoic resistance of the Steelbacks continued on the resumption. However, as frustration looked to be setting in, Tom Helm found some extra bounce and Zaib feathered an edge through to Joe Cracknell.Still the defiance continued with Ben Sanderson, on a pair from the first innings, battling for over an hour for his 12 and guiding Northamptonshire to the sanctuary of tea. With the new ball imminent, Ben Geddes was introduced to speed up its arrival and promptly found the edge of Sanderson's bat with his third ball, Higgins taking a smart catch at slip.Higgins took the ripe cherry in hand to remove Guthrie, before an entertaining last-wicket stand that saw Keogh reach a thoroughly deserved half-century.Chahal, on a king pair played a glorious off-drive and a few other less conventional shots to reach 20, but Cornwell rearranged his stumps to clinch victory with 25 overs left.

Arne Slot makes Luis Diaz admission after winger misses pre-season friendly amid Bayern Munich interest
Liverpool left Luis Diaz out of their pre-season friendly against AC Milan amid uncertainty about his future as Bayern Munich continue their bid to sign the winger. Head coach Arne Slot decided it was best not to pick Diaz after a summer of interest in him and with the 28-year-old seemingly open to a move away from Anfield. Bayern have been in persistent dialogue with Liverpool over the Colombian winger, even though the Premier League champions have maintained the former Porto player is not for sale. They made an initial approach, which Liverpool rebuffed, and then followed up with a £58.5m offer, which was rejected. But Bayern were in talks with Liverpool again last week and Slot did not pick Diaz for the 4-2 defeat to AC Milan. Slot said: 'He's training really well with us but we've decided, for now, not to play him yet. I'm used to talking to most of my players on a regular basis. Lucho is training really well and we've decided he's not playing at the moment. I cannot comment much more about that.' Barcelona had also made an initial inquiry for Diaz before bringing in Manchester United 's Marcus Rashford on loan instead. There has also been interest from the Saudi Pro-League in Diaz, who Liverpool believe is worth more than €100m. However, Slot said Darwin Nunez was absent from the AC Milan game because of a minor injury, not due to the possibility he may leave. He added: 'In Darwin's situation, he's trained also really well and played a few good games for us, but he was injured so we didn't want to take a risk with him as well.'

Calandagan lands King George victory to seal repeat success for trainer Graffard
Calandagan, the 11-10 favourite, passed all four of his rivals in the home straight here on Saturday to win the 75th running of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. It gave his trainer, Francis-Henri Graffard, a second successive win in the Ascot showpiece after Goliath's 25-1 victory 12 months ago. Kalpana, the only filly in the race, struck for home inside the final quarter-mile under Oisin Murphy and opened a useful lead, but Calandagan and Mickael Barzalona were soon eating into her advantage with every stride and Calandagan was in front with a dozen strides to spare. He was a length clear of Kalpana at the line, with Rebel's Romance next across the line and Jan Brueghel, who beat Calandagan into second place in last month's Coronation Cup, fourth. This story will be updated.
