Delhi court issues non-bailable warrant against Medha Patkar
A Delhi court on Wednesday issued a non-bailable warrant against social activist Medha Patkar upon her failure to fulfil the conditions — deposit a bond of ₹25,000 and compensation of ₹1 lakh — of her release on probation after being convicted in a defamation case filed by Delhi lieutenant governor (LG) VK Saxena. She was sentenced to five months of imprisonment in May 2024 and penalised.
Additional sessions judge Vishal Singh of the Saket district court passed the order and rejected an application by Patkar seeking postponement of the execution of the order issued on April 8, which directed that the conditions be fulfilled by April 23.
Terming Patkar's application 'mischievous and frivolous' and calculated to 'hoodwink' the court, judge Singh said that instead of appearing in court to comply with the order on sentence, the convict was absent and deliberately failed to comply with the order.
Issuing the warrant through the Delhi police commissioner, the court said that if Patkar failed to comply with its previous order by the next date of hearing, it would be constrained to reconsider the benevolent sentence and alter its order on sentence.
Patkar's lawyers, Abhimanyu Shreshtha and Sridevi Panniker, submitted in the application that Patkar was not in the city for two weeks and sought a postponement till her return. The bench declined to entertain the application and posted the matter for further consideration on May 3.
The development comes a day after Patkar made a similar request in the Delhi high court, but it directed her to approach the trial court to seek postponement and indicated that a failure to execute the trial court's order would have repercussions. The application was opposed by advocates Gajinder Kumar and Kiran Jai appearing for the LG.
On April 8, judge Singh released Patkar on probation with the said conditions after observing that the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader was a person of repute with no history of conviction. She applied for probation after being sentenced in May 2024 in the defamation case to undergo five months of imprisonment with a fine.
The case against Patkar stems from a press release issued by her on November 24, 2000, which alleged that Saxena, who was the president of the non-profit organisation National Council of Civil Liberties at the time, had given a cheque to NBA, which subsequently bounced. Saxena, who was actively involved in ensuring the timely completion of the Sardar Sarovar Project, filed the defamation case on January 18, 2001, alleging that Patkar's press release contained false accusations intended to harm his reputation.
On May 24, 2024, metropolitan magistrate Raghav Sharma convicted Patkar, concluding that her actions were deliberate, malicious and aimed at tarnishing Saxena's reputation. On April 2, judge Singh upheld the order by the magistrate and passed the order on probation on April 8.

When a war starts, irrespective of who started it, it should be very clear that the war should be terminated so that people can go back to their routine and focus on the progress of the nation. 'When I was young the first thing that was taught to be principles of war was selection and maintenance of aim." People have shifted their objectives and aims every now and then. People have got down to their egos in this world, and that is what is continuously driving the conflicts going on in the world. He said: 'I think we set a very good example. Our objective was very clear. Our objective was to teach the terrorists a lesson that they will think twice before doing something, now they know what kind of price they can pay. And once we have achieved those objectives, we should look for all windows of opportunity to stop that, rather than just continue. We were actually on a song that night. Five Pakistani fighter jets, one aircraft taken down during Operation Sindoor: IAF Chief
The Indian Air Force (IAF) took down six Pakistan Air Force aircraft, including five fighter jets and one large aircraft, during Operation Sindoor in May, the Chief of Air Staff Marshal A.P. Singh said on Saturday (August 9, 2025). Delivering the keynote address of the 16th Air Chief Marshal L.M. Katre Memorial Lecture in Bengaluru, Air Chief Marshal Singh said, 'We have at least five fighters (jets) confirmed killed and one large aircraft which could be an Electronics Intelligence (ELINT) aircraft or an Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft which was taken out from a distance of about 300 km, which is the largest ever recorded surface-to-air kill that we can talk about.' This is the first time a senior officer of the Indian Armed Forces has officially confirmed bringing down Pakistan's air assets during Operation Sindoor. The Shahbaz Jacobabad air field, one of Pakistan's major airfields, was also targeted by the IAF during the operation, he said, adding that there are indications that there was at least one AEW&C in one hangar and a few F-16's in another hangar which were hit during the attack. 'Apart from these [aircraft], there are a large number of [unmanned aerial vehicles] UAVs and drones, some of whose missiles had fallen in our territory; we have recovered them. A lot of wreckage has been recovered, which is being studied so we can make out what they did, where they were launched from, what route they followed, what kind of systems they had, what generation they belonged to, what kind of features they had, etc.,' the IAF Chief said. He added that India's air defence systems had done a wonderful job, especially the Russian S-400 system which he described as a game-changer. During his talk, Air Chief Marshal Singh also shared 'before and after' images of the damage caused by the Indian air attack on the Jaish-e-Mohammad's headquarters at Bahawalpur, and the Lashkar-e-Taiba's headquarters at Muedike, both in Pakistan. He noted that, though the IAF had carried out similar attacks during Balakot airstrikes in 2019, it could not get images from inside the targeted buildings. He added that one of the reasons for the success of Operation Sindoor was the political will and the free hand given to the armed forces to carry out the attack. Following the remarks, the Congress party asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi why he stopped Operation Sindoor on May 10 and under whose pressure. 'In view of the new revelations made by the Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh today, it becomes all the more shocking why the PM suddenly stopped Operation Sindoor on the evening of May 10th,' Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X. 'Where did the pressure on the PM come from and why did he capitulate so very soon?' he asked. Meanwhile, Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif claimed that no aircraft of the military was hit or destroyed by Indian armed forces. 'Not a single Pakistani aircraft was hit or destroyed by (the) Indian (side),' Asif claimed in a post on social media. Inquiry by Law Department into alleged vote fraud, says Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Saturday (August 9, 2025) that the Law Department will conduct an inquiry into the issue pertaining to the alleged ''vote fraud'' during the Lok Sabha elections. Speaking to media persons at the Mysuru airport, Mr. Siddaramaiah said whatever action is possible will be initiated based on the recommendations of the department.
