Are you a fan of Matcha? I may have found the best café for it in Colchester
I'VE never understood the hype around matcha. There, I said it.
Every so often, I give it another try — convinced by glowing Instagram posts and gushing recommendations — only to be met with yet another overly bitter, grassy disappointment.
But scrolling past yet another story of someone sipping a bright green iced latte on a sunny terrace finally pushed me to make one last attempt.
This time, I headed to Ella's Ca Phe House on Sir Isaac's Walk — and I'm glad I did.
Ella's ca phe house (Image: Newsquest Reporter) A well-known Vietnamese café and restaurant in the heart of Colchester, Ella's has already earned a loyal following for its coffee — so I figured, if anyone can change my mind about matcha, it's them.

I ordered their Strawberry Matcha Latte (£6.50) and, to my surprise, it was fantastic.
Strawberry matcha (Image: Newsquest Reporter) Light, creamy, not overly sweet, and without that overpowering grassy flavour I usually dread.
The strawberry and matcha actually complemented each other — a rare feat, in my experience.
While sipping on my very first enjoyable matcha, I scanned the menu and decided to try something more: their Pork Banh Mi (£9.50).
A traditional Vietnamese sandwich, it arrived crisp, fresh, and absolutely packed with flavour — tender pork, crunchy pickled veg, and a kick of spice nestled in a perfectly baked baguette.

The venue itself is just as vibrant as the flavours.
The décor is colourful and full of personality, with a warm and welcoming vibe. The staff are lovely — friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about what they serve.

The gorgeous interiors (Image: Newsquest Reporter) It's no wonder the place is always buzzing.
With summer here, I have no doubt Ella's will continue to be a go-to hotspot in Colchester.
From refreshing drinks to flavour-packed bites, it's a café that delivers — even for the matcha sceptics among us.
So if you, like me, have never been sold on the green stuff, give it one more go at Ella's. You might just be converted.

Why Danny Boyle shot ‘28 Years Later' on iPhones

Director Danny Boyle famously shot his post-apocalyptic classic '28 Days Later' on Canon digital cameras, making it easier for him to capture eerie scenes of an abandoned London, and giving the movie's fast-moving zombies a terrifying immediacy. To make his decades-later sequel '28 Years Later' (which opened this weekend), Boyle turned to a different piece of consumer tech — the iPhone. Boyle told Wired that by using a rig that could hold 20 iPhone Pro Max cameras, the filmmaking team created 'basically a poor man's bullet time,' capturing the brutal action scenes from a variety of angles. Even when he wasn't using the rig, Boyle (who once directed a biopic of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs) said the iPhone was the movie's 'principal camera,' albeit after disabling settings like automatic focus and adding special accessories. 'Filming with iPhones allowed us to move without huge amounts of equipment,' Boyle said, adding that the team was 'able to move quickly and lightly to areas of the countryside that we wanted to retain their lack of human imprint.' Kelsey Parker suffers tragic loss of third child

Kelsey Parker's third child has been "born sleeping". The 34-year-old podcaster has announced the devastating news her and boyfriend Will Lindsay's son, who they named Phoenix, was stillborn, just a week before his due date. Kelsey - who has Aurelia, five, and Bodhi, four, with her late husband Tom Parker - shared a poem about her baby on Instagram, which was captioned: "Phoenix Parker-Lindsay, you will forever be loved." The short verse read: "The grew quiet as you arrived, So loved, so longed for, yet not alive. Our precious boy, our angel light, Born with wings, took silent flight'. "We named you Phoenix, brave and bright. A soul of love, of warmth and light Though we never heard you cry, You'll live in hearts that won't ask why. No breath you drew, no eyes to see, Still, you mean everything to me. You'll journey with us, softly near, In every sigh, in every tear." Shortly after announcing the news, Kelsey took to her Instagram Story to thank fans in advance for their messages of support but explained she and her family would be in need of some "space and time" to grieve. She wrote: "Before I receive an influx of lovely messages and heartfelt wishes, I wanted to just say that I truly appreciate everything you are all going to say and share'. "But with the news being so raw, I would really like to ensure that we as a family are given space and time to process this devastating and earth-shattering news. "I love you all and thank you for your understanding and space. Love always, Kelsey, Will, and the Parker Family." Kelsey recently defended herself from criticism she had moved on too quickly after Tom died from a brain tumour in 2022. She told Closer magazine: "Will's been amazing. He embraces Tom. But the bad comments stick with you. "I think coming to our life must have been a lot, but again, I think Will was the perfect person because he doesn't overthink it. "People will ask, 'Is Will jealous of Tom?' He doesn't feel that way about Tom, which I was always worried about, because my love for Tom is obviously like beyond." And Kelsey believes the late Wanted singer "picked" the tree surgeon for her. She said: "I do feel like Tom actually picked him. I think he was like, 'He's great. He's perfect for her.' "

Kelsey Parker announces her baby has died

Podcast host Kelsey Parker has announced that her baby has died. Parker revealed she was expecting her third child in January, and on Sunday shared an Instagram post with the news that her son was 'born sleeping'. She lost her husband, The Wanted star Tom Parker, in 2022 after he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour, and the baby was her first with her new partner Will Lindsay. Parker, who is mother to Aurelia, five, and Bodhi, four, with the late singer, shared a poem on Instagram about the boy she was expecting, whom she and Lindsay had named Phoenix. 'For Phoenix, Born Sleeping, Forever Loved,' the poem began, with a caption: 'Phoenix Parker-Lindsay, you will forever be loved.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kelsey Parker (@being_kelsey) After sharing the post, Parker also put up an Instagram story which read: 'Before I receive an influx of lovely messages and heart-felt well wishes, I want to just say that I truly appreciate everything you are all going to say and share. 'But with the news being so raw, I would really like to ensure that we as a family are given space and time to process this devastating and earth-shattering news. 'I love you all and thank you for your understanding and space. 'Love always, Kelsey, Will and The Parker Family.' Parker has previously spoken candidly about how trolls have made her feel guilty for having a new partner. She said in March: 'I'm always going to have guilt but what's so hard is that Tom's not here any more, so what do people want me to do? 'Our house was full of so much sadness but now it's full of happiness, the kids deserve that more than anything.' Following her husband's death, Parker has raised money for a brain tumour charity by organising annual charity football matches in his memory. The 34-year-old hosts a podcast with model Georgia Jones called Mum's the Word! where the pair share parenting advice with celebrity guests.
