
New UK Government update for people on RTS energy meter ahead of switch-off this month

The UK Government has announced that thousands of households using the Radio Teleswitching System (RTS) 'will not unexpectedly lose access to their heating and hot water' once the deadline passes on June 30.
Thousands of Scottish households with ageing energy meters will be affected when the mass RTS deactivation begins at the end of this month. The latest figures from Ofgem indicate that as of April 4, 2025, there were 129,814 RTS meters remaining in Scotland.
However, Energy Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh gave reassurance to RTS customers in a written response to Labour MP John Whitby, who asked what steps are being taken to 'ensure that people in rural areas retain access to functioning energy meters' following the RTS switch-off.
Ms Fahnbulleh responded: 'Customers will not unexpectedly lose access to their heating and hot water after 30th June, and we will not allow widespread disconnection.
'Suppliers must fulfil all of their legal obligations to their customers, and that any future, localised phase-out of RTS meters after 30th June must be controlled, planned, and communicated properly to all customers in order to proceed.
'The UK Government will do everything it can to ensure that all customers are protected, and will work with Ofgem to hold suppliers to account if required. We expect energy suppliers to be taking measures, such as deploying roaming teams of installers including in rural areas, to ensure consumers receive replacement meters in a timely manner.'
The head of Scotland's national advice service recently raised the alarm over the slow replacement of thousands of ageing energy meters, warning of a 'looming crisis' just weeks before the deadline.
Andrew Bartlett, chief executive of Advice Direct Scotland, said vulnerable households were among those at risk of being 'left in the cold' with less than a month to go.
In a letter to Ofgem chief executive Jonathan Brearley, he warned that many households remain unaware of what will happen if their RTS meter is not replaced.
A similar letter has also been sent to the regulator by Consumer Scotland, the independent statutory body which represents the interests of customers.
In his letter, Mr Bartlett called for energy suppliers to proactively identify and prioritise vulnerable customers for meter upgrades, as well as a fresh public information campaign.
With the RTS deadline fast approaching, Advice Direct Scotland, which runs the national energy advice service energyadvice.scot, has been receiving more calls from worried households.
Anyone who has not received a letter or email should contact their supplier now. Support is also available at energyadvice.scot or by calling 0808 196 8660.
Mr Bartlett said: 'With less than a month to go until the RTS signal starts being switched off across the country, it is increasingly clear that progress on replacing them has not been fast enough. Ofgem needs to urgently clarify if it intends to stick to the June 30 deadline and if a phased approach is being taken, which parts of Scotland will be affected first.
'We are picking up a lot of confusion among affected customers, some of whom are trying to have their RTS meters replaced but have been told it isn't possible until after the switch-off.
'At a time when thousands of people are struggling with energy debts and the cost of living, nobody should be left out of pocket for replacing their meter either.
'Our message to consumers is that if you know someone with an RTS meter, especially if they are vulnerable, encourage them to get it replaced before the deadline if they can.
'The most important thing to remember is that free help and advice is available. Anyone who is worried should visit www.energyadvice.scot or call 0808 196 8660 for assistance.'

'I'll miss coming in and seeing regular faces and this will be an emotional time, but everything moves on I suppose. Life changes and you've got to move on, but I will miss the conversations with the customers. 'Business trends have changed and the customer flow has decreased in the city centre. We used to depend a lot on office workers and I think that's the same for a lot of the trade in this area in city. But with fewer workers coming into the financial district, that has made it difficult for us to survive.' The shop name derived fro Anwar's father's name, Ahmed Ali Recalling the early days at South Bridge, the 67-year-old said: 'We wanted to provide a service for the local community so we could help them as much with all the products that they need for everyday use. We tried to provide value for money. 'We were so successful at Southbridge we thought we needed another unit and Lothian Road looked like the right site. Lothian Road was a lot quieter at that time - Earl Grey Street was mostly empty apart from Goldbergs at the back - but it was still good enough to trade and it got a lot busier later on.' Anwar's son and fellow co-owner, Adnan Ulhaq, said: 'I always wanted to carry on our family business because this shop has meant so much to so many people and means so much to our family. I think it's very important and I think that's why a lot of our customers keep coming back to us. But due to the downturn in office workers coming in, with Standard Life being closed at the moment, with Aberdeen Asset being closed, with Capital House becoming a Premier Inn - there's a lot of empty offices in Edinburgh's financial hub at the moment. I think that has played a part in helping us make the decision to close down. Seed potato farmers left in limbo after EU trade deal reached
Seed potato farmers in Scotland say they need to know 'sooner rather than later' when they can resume exporting their products to the EU. In March, a political agreement between Europe and the UK was reached after crops were banned post-Brexit, which farmers say cost the industry tens of millions of pounds. Scotland's seed potatoes are exported worldwide, but until recently, farmers haven't been able to sell them into the EU. The multi-million pound industry says a clear timeline is needed quickly if they're to make the most of the agreement. Farmer Robert Doig told STV News: 'We lost all our European market in Brexit, it went to zero…for those doing business with the EU it was sort of a catastrophe. 'But the EU seed still came in so we lost our market and had another one coming in. 'The seed potato industry has contracted a little bit.' He says the details of the deal need to come sooner rather than later. Farmers now predominantly export seed potatoes into North Africa, with Egypt and Morocco the largest export markets. Scott Walker, chief executive of GB Potatoes, said: 'This has been extremely welcome. 'The timing of those details is important to allow farmers to meet the EU's demand.' NFU Scotland president Andrew Connon said last month: 'This agreement marks a welcome shift towards reducing the red tape and costs that have frustrated Scottish farmers and food exporters for years. 'While details are still emerging, anything that helps restore smoother trade with our largest export market is a positive step.' He added: 'The devil will be in the detail. We need to ensure this works across all sectors – from livestock to seed potatoes and delivers real benefits on the ground. 'The principle of the deal is dynamic alignment with EU policy, but we need to understand what the exceptions might be and how this might work in practice.' Five councillors in court over health and safety matter
Scottish Tory councillor James Adams, who represents Kilmarnock West and Crosshouse, will appear alongside them. It is understood the charges relate to their capacity as trustees of the Kilmarnock Leisure Centre Trust, and not as councillors. Ms Maitland has represented Kilmarnock South since 2017, and serves as the member with responsibility for health and social care, while Mr Linton, who represents Kilmarnock and Crosshouse, was elected in 1999 and holds responsibility for resources and economy. Ms Leitch represents the Ballochmyle ward, which covers Auchinleck, Catrine, Cronberry, Logan, Lugar, Mauchline, Muirkirk and Sorn. Mr Douglas represents Kilmarnock East and Hurlford. All five councillors will appear at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Thursday June 12 on a pleading diet. In a statement provided to The Herald, East Ayrshire Council said: 'East Ayrshire Council can confirm that Claire Leitch, Iain Linton, Clare Maitland and Barry Douglas are four of the six trustees of the Kilmarnock Leisure Centre Trust, which provided leisure facilities at the Galleon Leisure Centre in Kilmarnock." The council later confirmed Mr Adams, who is also a trustee, will also appear. The spokeswoman added: 'The case is due to call in court as a pleading diet later this week in relation to a health and safety matter, which involves them in their capacity as trustees rather than as councillors. 'As this is a live matter that has not yet called in court, the council would confirm that out of respect and deference to the court process, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.' Police Scotland and the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service did not respond to request for comment.
