Why are so many dead whales washing up in the Bay?
(KRON) — There is a growing crisis facing whales in the Bay Area. In the last few weeks, nearly half a dozen whales have been found dead in and around the San Francisco Bay.
Now experts are sounding the alarm and alerting the public that they can help.
'In one necropsy, the whale died of a boat strike,' said Giancarlo Rulli with the Marine Mammal Center.
On Friday, Rulli said the center along with researchers are working feverishly with boat services like ferries, recreation and cargo container pilots to get the word out about the migrating whales. With commercial Dungeness crab season along the Bay Area coast going through May 1, whales in the area are at risk of entanglement.

'We know that research shows many whales are dying in Baja,' said Rulli.
According to Rulli, one way the public can help is by alerting experts of a whale sighting so that scientists can go see if there is trouble before the whale goes into distress. The Marine Mammal Center reported 11 live whales inside the Bay one week ago.
An app is available for those who want to help whales.
'This is the way to help, the app is called Whale Alert,' Rulli said.
Rulli also says that besides whales getting impacted by water hazards, the melting of ice depleting fish supply is also problematic.
'Whales are starving,' he said.
Whales, Rulli said, serve a vital role in the bigger picture.
'They are the ambassadors, if they are dying then oceans will be impacted and a lot of other life as well,' he said.

Crews rescue kitten from storm drain in Livermore
(KRON) — A tiny kitten was rescued from a storm drain on Tuesday in Livermore, city officials posted on social media. The animal was found trapped in a storm drain near Preston Avenue. Livermore Public Works crews, assisted by the Livermore Police Department, executed this 'tricky rescue,' officials said. 'After carefully removing the storm drain cover, Officer Holmes lowered a humane trap and used a net to gently guide the kitten to safety,' the city wrote. It is unknown how long the kitten was stuck in the storm drain. Photos of the rescue were posted on the City of Livermore's social media page (see below). Two more suspected brothels found in San Jose
(KRON) — The San Jose Police Department Human Trafficking Task Force recently arrested two human trafficking suspects as part of Operation Coast to Coast, a nationwide crackdown targeting illicit massage businesses. On May 29, detectives investigated two San Jose businesses on the 300 block of West Julian Street and 1800 block of Sheri Ann Circle. While executing search warrants, detectives found suspected brothels and three victims inside, according to SJPD. Three adult women were provided with resources for human trafficking victims. Detectives arrested a man and woman who are suspected of operating the brothels. They were identified by police as Yanqiong Xiong, 39, of Cupertino and Guijun Zhao, 45, of Rosemead. Xiong and Zhao were booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail. More than 100 law enforcement agencies participated in Operation Coast to Coast, targeting 26 illicit massage businesses nationwide. The operation resulted in 74 arrests and 88 survivors rescued. Last year, police found four more suspected brothels around San Jose that were operated inside homes on McKee Road, Palacio Royale Circle, Bonita Avenue, and Gifford Avenue. Detectives went undercover posing as potential clients seeking prostitutes before they arrested several suspects. Meta called out for tracking Android users across the web without their consent — what you need to know
Academics at the Radboud University in the Netherlands and IMDEA Networks found that Meta has been tracking the web browsing activity of Android users without their knowledge or consent – even when the users were in incognito mode or using a VPN. As long as the Android owners were logged into Meta's apps, like Instagram and Facebook, Meta was able to track what users watched, clicked or bought in order to serve them more personalized ads. Initially spotted in January, the apps were loading a script that sent data back to other apps on the same device, basically bypassing Android's built-in security and privacy features. A professor at Radoud University realized that the Meta Pixel tracker (present on around 20% of popular websites) had been linked to Facebook and Instagram apps on one of the best Android phones. Instead of sending collected information to Meta, that linked the Pixel tracker to the cell phone apps and the user's identities as registered to Facebook and Instagram which allowed the company to bypass security protections enabled on Android devices. This behavior occurred on all major Android browsers, but Meta says it did stop earlier this week. According to BoyGenuisReport though,Meta has only been using this type of data collection since September of 2024. Google responded by saying the companies who collected sensitive data in this manner were using Android capabilities 'in unintended ways that blatantly violate our security and privacy principles.' They've also stated they have implemented changes to mitigate these types of invasive techniques, and have additionally launched their own investigation and are in direct contact with the involved parties. Meta has confirmed that they are in contact with Google by issuing their own statement. The company also confirmed that the tracking did occur but ended earlier this week. Likewise, Meta also told Sky News they would be looking into the issue and that they were discussing with Google 'a potential miscommunication regarding the application of their policies.'
