Al-Qurain eyes revenge against Kazma

Arab Times02-04-2025
KUWAIT CITY, April 2: Kazma Club's first basketball team faces a challenging matchup against Al-Qurain at 7:30 pm today in the 17th round of the "Merged" League at the Basketball Association Hall in the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Sports Complex. The game will be preceded by a 5:00 pm encounter between Al-Sulaibikhat and Al-Yarmouk, also at the same venue.
Al-Sulaibikhat enters today's match with renewed hopes of securing a semi-final spot following its victory over Al-Qadsiya in the previous round. Their focus is now firmly on collecting as many points as possible. Coach Fahad Barjas aims to guide his team to a straightforward win over Al-Yarmouk in preparation for the more challenging match against Al-Qurain next Monday. In contrast, Al-Yarmouk, having endured several recent defeats—including a heavy 49-118 loss to Kazma—enters today's game with no pressure and little to lose.
The second game of the day is expected to be the most significant and closely contested, as Kazma and Al-Qurain are tied with 23 points each. Both teams have impressed this season and feature several standout players, both local and professional.
Kazma is relying on its captain, Ahmed Al-Balushi, Youssef Burhama, the Al-Saho brothers—Abdulrahman and Saho—and Abdullah Ibrahim, along with American professionals Dwayne Jackson and Jackson. Meanwhile, Al-Qurain's coach, Yahya Kuleib, is well aware of his team's capabilities and those of its opponent. He's eager for another major victory following its historic 96-80 win over Al-Qadsia in mid-March. Al-Qurain boasts several promising young talents, including the standout Adel Al-Saeed. In their first-round match, Kazma triumphed 101-89.

Al-Nassr knocks Al-Ittihad out of the Saudi Super Cup to reach the final

HONG KONG, Aug 19: Al-Nassr booked its spot in the Saudi Super Cup final with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Al-Ittihad in the semi-final held in Hong Kong. Sadio Mané and João Félix scored for Al-Nassr, while Steven Bergwijn netted Al-Ittihad's lone goal. Red cards have become a recurring theme for Al-Nassr in recent Super Cup editions. This time, Sadio Mané was shown a red card in the 25th minute after a strong challenge on Al-Ittihad goalkeeper Hamed Al-Shanqeeti, following a VAR review. Al-Nassr has now seen at least one player sent off in each of the last three Super Cup tournaments. The trend started in 2024 when Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off against Al-Hilal, and last season, Marcelo Brozović received a red card in stoppage time despite a 2-0 semi-final win over Al-Taawoun.

Ilona Maher takes women's rugby onto new plane

PARIS: Ilona Maher transcends women's rugby, giving it a profile outside of the sport in the way that Mia Hamm did for women's football. Now the stage is set at the women's World Cup in England for the American to spark even more interest. The 29-year-old phenomenon has attracted over eight million followers on social media, not only through her sporting exploits but also for her promotion of body positivity. She played a pivotal role in the USA women's team winning a first ever Olympic medal, beating Australia in the third-place playoff in Paris last year. On the back of that achievement, Maher featured in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition and appeared in the US version of hit TV show 'Dancing with the Stars', finishing runner-up. The Maher-fuelled improvement of the USA team attracted the attention of American investor Michele Kang who donated $4 million to help develop the USA Women's Rugby Sevens Team over four years. In another sport, Kang owns the Lyon women's football team, the eight-time European champions. Maher's days in Paris were not just spent playing rugby but also attracting even more followers with her pithy social media posts. She compared life in the Athletes' Village to a reality TV show, in one humorous posting saying she was there 'looking for love', to which her friend replies: 'No you are here to play rugby.' In more reflective mode in Paris, she told the Bleacher Report one of her goals was trying to reassure 'girls' that playing sport did not take away their 'girliness'. 'What we're trying to show is the beauty that in sports you can be a badass on the field, you can be a beast on the field, but also be a beauty,' she said. 'It's really important for me because I want girls to see what their body is capable of. 'It's not just to be looked at, objectified, but it's strong and it's fast, and it's brilliant.' Maher, who through her body positivity push has become a brand ambassador for a deodorant and a skincare product she co-founded, revels in her global popularity and being 'America's sweetheart.' 'I love when people call me that because I feel like I'm maybe not the image you would have of a sweetheart in some sense of the word,' Maher told CNN in January this year. 'I'm honoured.' – AFP
