80% of mainland Chinese shoppers bought Hong Kong products online: poll

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council said on Thursday that its findings were based on a survey of 2,200 middle-to-high-income consumers from various mainland cities during the second and third quarters of 2024.
The survey showed that 78 per cent of mainland consumers bought products from the city online in the past year, and that they were frequent shoppers, averaging 9.4 purchases per month, particularly those in tier one and the nine cities in the Greater Bay Area.
'When shopping online, mainland consumers' primary consideration is whether the products are genuine, not low prices,' council director of research Irina Fan Yuen-yee said.
'This suggests that Hong Kong businesses can leverage the superior quality of Hong Kong products and the strong reputation of Hong Kong brands in mainland China to expand into the mainland e-commerce market.'

Online shopping for Hong Kong products was particularly popular among young mainland consumers aged 18 to 29, with 83 per cent of this group having made an online purchase in the past year, the survey showed.

China bucked a global downturn in industrial robot installations last year, according to the latest figures. The installation volume of industrial robots globally declined to around 520,000 units in 2024, according to preliminary data from the International Federation of Robotics. Major industrial robotic markets showed a general decline, with Japan recording a 7 per cent decline to 43,000 units, the United States reporting a 9 per cent decrease to 34,000 units and the European Union logging a 6 per cent fall to 86,000 units. 'For the past four years, new installations in China are trending more or less sideways,' federation president Takayuki Ito said at the World Robot Conference in Beijing on Saturday.

Hong Kong will step up efforts to lure foreign investment and venture into new markets amid geopolitical challenges and trade tensions, as it teams up with mainland Chinese businesses to seize opportunities abroad, the city leader has said. The vow by John Lee Ka-chiu on Sunday came as Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po revealed that the Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises (Oases) would soon announce the fifth batch of strategic enterprises establishing or expanding their operations in Hong Kong, an addition expected to take the total to about 100. Speaking ahead of his policy address scheduled to be delivered next month, Chief Executive Lee highlighted Hong Kong's strengths in convincing foreign businesses to expand their operations locally, while also helping mainland companies go global. As of July, the Companies Registry listed more than 1.5 million local businesses and over 15,000 non-local firms, a record, he noted. InvestHK, the city's investment promotion agency, had helped 1,333 companies establish or expand their operations in Hong Kong between January 2023 and last month, bringing in HK$174 billion (US$22.1 billion) in direct investment within their first year of operation while creating more than 19,000 jobs, he added. 'In the face of complex and volatile geopolitical challenges and the new trade landscape, we will not slow down but speed up steadily in attracting investment to bring more momentum to the local economy,' he wrote on social media.
