German prosecutors move to strip AfD lawmaker's immunity amid bribery probe

BERLIN - Public prosecutors in Germany have moved to strip a politician from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) of his immunity as a lawmaker after initiating a probe into bribery and money laundering allegations, local media reported on Friday.
Prosecutors in the eastern city of Dresden confirmed that an investigation had been initiated against a German lawmaker on charges of bribery while he was a member of the European Parliament as well as money laundering in connection with Chinese payments.
The prosecutors did not name the suspect.
According to the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, the probe is focused on Maximilian Krah, one of the new cohort of AfD politicians who entered the German parliament after February's federal election.
Krah's office was not immediately available for comment on the report, which was also carried by Der Spiegel magazine.
Last month German authorities arrested a former aide of Krah on suspicion of having used his position to gather information for the Chinese intelligence service and of spying on Chinese dissidents.
The man, identified as Jian G., obtained more than 500 documents to transfer to China, including some classified by the European Parliament as particularly sensitive, the federal prosecutors' office said in a statement.
Krah has not commented publicly on the case since his former aide's arrest. Two years ago, when a member of the European Parliament, he dismissed allegations then surfacing that his aide had been lobbying for China as slander against himself. REUTERS

An appeal by Bezerra's defence against his sentence was denied by the court. This comes nearly three years after Bezerra's arrest on July 10, 2022 for orally raping a sedated woman undergoing a caesarean section at the Heloneida Studart Women's Hospita l in Sao Joao de Meriti . Investigations found that the victim, who could not recall what happened during the procedure, had been given an excessive amount of anaesthetic, according to Brazilian daily O Globo . Bezerra was caught red-handed by his colleagues, who had grown suspicious of the amount of sedatives he had administered to other pregnant women earlier in the day. They hid a cellphone in a cabinet in the operating room and recorded Bezerra's crime on camera. Images of the rape were circulated months after the incident, sparking condemnation and expressions of disgust towards Bezerra's crime from netizens in Brazil and beyond. At least 30 other women who had given birth while assisted by Bezerra approached the police after the incident came to light, reported TV Band Rio . The Regional Council of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro and the Federal Council of Medicine had in December 2023 revoked his professional registration as an anaesthesiologist without the possibility of an appeal. Accident claims life of Singaporean cyclist in Kulai, Johor

PHOTO: THE STAR KULAI - A 42-year-old Singaporean male cyclist died in Johor on June 14 after he hit a pothole, fell and got run over by a gravel-laden lorry. Kulai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Seng Lee said the incident occurred along Jalan Gunung Pulai. 'The victim, who was with three other cyclists, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene,' he said in a statement, adding that the 41-year-old lorry driver was unhurt. ACP Tan said the deceased was sent to Hospital Temenggong Seri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim in Kulai for a post-mortem examination. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act, causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Earlier, a video clip of the incident, believed to have been recorded by the lorry driver, was widely shared on social media. In the clip, which has since been taken down, the helmet-wearing victim was seen trapped under the heavy vehicle. Zelenskiy says Ukraine halts Russian troops' advance in Sumy region

REUTERS/Thomas Peter KYIV - Ukrainian forces have stopped Russian troops advancing in the northeastern Sumy region and are now battling along the border to regain control, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said. In remarks released for publication by his office on Saturday, Zelenskiy said that Moscow has amassed about 53,000 troops in the direction of Sumy. "We are leveling the position. The fighting there is along the border. You should understand that the enemy has been stopped there. And the maximum depth at which the fighting takes place is 7 km from the border," Zelenskiy said. Reuters could not verify battlefield reports. Russia's troops have been focusing their assaults in the eastern Donetsk region, but since the start of the month, they have intensified their attacks in the north-east, announcing plans to create a so-called 'buffer zone' in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. The Russian war in Ukraine is in its fourth year but it has intensified in recent weeks. Ukraine conducted an audacious drone attack that took out multiple aircraft inside Russia and also hit the bridge connecting Russia to the annexed Crimean peninsula using underwater explosives. Zelenskiy said that the Ukrainian troops had maintained their defensive lines along more than 1,000 kilometres of the frontline. He also dismissed Moscow's claims that Russian troops had crossed the administrative border of the Ukrainian central region of Dnipropetrovsk. Zelenskiy said that Russia was sending small assault groups "to get one foot on the administrative border" and make a picture or a video but these attacks were repelled. Dnipropetrovsk region borders three regions that are partially occupied by Russia – Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Russia now controls about one-fifth of the Ukrainian territory. Zelenskiy acknowledged that Ukraine was unable to regain all of its territory by military force and reiterated his pleas for stronger sanctions on Russia to force Moscow into negotiations to end the war. Two rounds of peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow in Istanbul produced few results that could lead to a ceasefire and a broader peace deal. The two sides agreed only to exchange prisoners of war. Several swaps have already been conducted this month, and Zelenskiy expected POW swaps to continue until June 20 or 21. "The agreement is that the exchanges will be completed, and the sides will discuss the next step," Zelenskiy said.
