Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has launched construction of the South Karbala Water Project, with a capacity of 16,000 cubic metres per hour, during a visit to Karbala Governorate.
The 702.5-billion-Iraqi-dinar [$539 million] project, located near Karbala International Airport, will feature a main treatment plant, eight pumping stations, an intermediate station near the Visitors' Road, and transmission pipelines totalling 270 km.
Al-Sudani said the government is continuing to implement its programme of development and service projects, aiming to provide essential services and improve living and economic conditions across all provinces. He stressed the need for adherence to specifications, proper preparation from the outset, and the engagement of an engineering consultant with the necessary technical inspections.
The project was awarded to the Chinese company Shandong Shiji [Shandong Xieji Construction Engineering] in February 2025.

Iraq to begin first phase of Development Road

2025-08-11T18:16:05+00:00 Shafaq News — Baghdad On Monday, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani instructed the Transport Ministry to complete all requirements for launching the first phase of the $17B Development Road, starting with rehabilitation of the al-Faw–Fishkhabur railway. In a statement, al-Sudani underscored the project's strategic role in connecting Iraq to regional and global trade networks, citing strong interest from partners outside the Middle East. Officials examined detailed rail alignments to maximize operational efficiency, discussed financing the initial segment in next year's budget, and addressed key connection points along the corridor. The meeting also noted the World Bank's readiness to fund the first phase and modernize Iraq's railways. Anchored in the south by the Grand Faw Port—set to be the Middle East's largest— the corridor's early works include five berths, a 62 km access road, a submerged tunnel, and a container yard, all scheduled for completion by late 2025. Iraq's accession to the UN-backed TIR Convention has already halved freight transit times between Europe and the Gulf, reinforcing the project's economic potential. The Development Road is a planned 1,200 km freight and passenger corridor linking the Grand Faw Port in Basra to Turkiye and onward to Europe by rail and highway. It aims to cut transit times between Asia and Europe, boost Iraq's transit revenues, and spur industrial and urban growth along its route.

Iraq increases capacity of Bismayah power plant

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, said on Monday that the Bismayah Combined Cycle Power Plant, located southeast of Baghdad, has raised its output capacity to 5,000 megawatts. During the inauguration of the power plant's expansion project, al-Sudani stated that the additional unit will increase the plant's production by 300 megawatts, raising its total capacity to 5,000 megawatts, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity recently mentioned that energy production in Iraq has hit an all-time record level of more than 28,000 megawatts. The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, said that the ministry has reached agreements with General Electric (GE) to develop power facilities with a capacity of 24,000 megawatts, as well as with Siemens, a Germany-based company, for an additional capacity of 14,000 megawatts. Fadel also stated that a deal with Shanghai Electric Group will be reached shortly to generate 10,000 megawatts of electrical power to fulfill the country's growing needs. While Iran has stopped delivering the gas needed to run several power plants in Iraq, the Iraqi government is working to implement steps aimed at addressing the present electricity crisis this summer and ensuring a steady supply of electricity.

Power drive: Iraq boosts Bismayah plant by 300 MW

Shafaq News – Baghdad On Monday, Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani inaugurated a 300 MW unit at the Bismayah gas-fired power plant, raising its total capacity to around 5,000 MW, his office said. Developed in partnership with GE and Turkiye's ENKA, Bismayah is among Iraq's largest power facilities. Energy experts say the added output is vital for easing chronic summer shortages and meeting fast-growing demand, which will require tens of billions of dollars in new investment. In April, Baghdad signed memorandums with US firms GE Vernova and UGT Renewables to develop 24,000 MW of gas-fired capacity and 3,000 MW of solar power projects, officials view as essential to cutting reliance on imported Iranian electricity and modernizing the grid. Iraq's network currently generates about 26,000 MW at peak, short of the 34,000 MW estimated to be needed during the hottest months.
