MAY 23 — Imagine cruising along the PLUS highway on a quiet morning. As you pass forested stretches near Tapah, something unusual catches your eye.
The trees lining the road, usually cloaked in deep green, are now tinged with pale yellow, cream, or soft pink. You wonder, is this Malaysia's version of spring?
What you've just seen may be a glimpse of one of South-east Asia's rarest and most spectacular phenomena: General flowering.
As yesterday was the International Day for Biodiversity, it's the perfect moment to shine a light on this little-known natural wonder, especially since it happens right here in our tropical rainforests.
General flowering isn't your typical blooming season. It doesn't occur every year, and there's no fixed schedule. Instead, once every few years (sometimes after a decade), forests across South-east Asia undergo a breathtaking transformation.
During general flowering, many tree species, especially the towering dipterocarps (a key group of tropical hardwood trees), bloom at the same time.
This rare synchrony turns the forest canopy into a colourful mosaic. Not long after, trees begin to fruit en masse, and the forest floor is blanketed with seeds and fruits.
This abundance draws birds, insects, monkeys, and many other animals that depend on these resources.
If you're lucky enough to witness it, even from a roadside, you'll understand why scientists and nature enthusiasts speak of it with such admiration.
In temperate regions, trees often bloom in response to longer daylight hours or rising temperatures.
In contrast, tropical trees work differently. Since our equatorial forests don't experience strong seasonal shifts, the environmental cues behind general flowering remain mysterious.

Researchers believe that short dry spells and small drops in temperature may play a role.
Some studies suggest drought-like conditions can trigger flowering in dipterocarps, but the pattern remains too inconsistent to predict future events reliably.
Despite years of research, general flowering continues to be one of the great puzzles of tropical forest ecology.
Malaysia is home to some of the most biodiverse rainforests on the planet. Events like general flowering help maintain that biodiversity by supporting food chains, regenerating forest life, and ensuring ecological balance.
However, our forests are facing growing threats. Climate change is bringing more frequent droughts and unpredictable weather, which could disrupt the natural signals that trigger general flowering.
If these events become less frequent or weaker (in intensity), the entire forest ecosystem could suffer, including the animals and communities that depend on it.
We also benefit directly from healthy forests. They help regulate our water supply, protect us from floods, and serve as carbon sinks.
Indigenous and rural communities rely on them for food, medicine, and livelihood. Disrupting these natural rhythms puts all of that at risk.
There's also untapped potential in general flowering as a unique eco-tourism and education opportunity.
With the right approach, Malaysians and visitors alike could witness this natural spectacle while learning more about the importance of conservation.
So, the next time you notice trees blooming in synchrony along the highway, don't just admire the view. You might be witnessing one of South-east Asia's most remarkable natural events.
This Biodiversity Day, let's take a moment to appreciate these wonders and renew our commitment to protecting them. Because when the forest blooms together, it reminds us just how connected and valuable, our natural world truly is.

Malaysia Techlympics 2025 aims for 1.7 million participants nationwide
PUTRAJAYA, June 6 — Malaysia Techlympics 2025 has officially kicked off, aiming to engage 1.7 million participations nationwide and will extend its reach to international participants in a Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) competition. The launch of Malaysia Techlympics 2025 marks a pivotal step in nurturing future-ready talent and driving a culture of innovation that will shape the nation's STI landscape for generations to come. Recognising the crucial role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the future economy, Malaysia Techlympics 2025 will introduce more AI-focused competitions and activities, encouraging future generations to explore and develop expertise in this critical field. Additionally, several selected competitions offer opportunities and exposure for students to gain global exposure and represent Malaysia on the world stage. Aligned with national and global priorities through support for the National STI Policy 2021–2030 and the Malaysia MADANI vision, Malaysia Techlympics aims to build high-impact local technological capacity. Sarawak reaffirms position as SE Asia's clean energy hub at UK conference, eyes global partnerships, says state deputy minister
KUCHING, June 6 — Sarawak has reaffirmed its position as Southeast Asia's clean energy leader, sharing the state's vision for its energy plans at the Energy Export Conference (EEC) 2025 in Aberdeen, United Kingdom (UK). In his keynote address, Sarawak Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni emphasised strong policy commitment, sustained innovation investment and robust regional cooperation as the state's foundation for energy transition. 'Sarawak is proud to be a pioneer in Asean when it comes to clean energy development. Our participation at EEC 2025 reflects our readiness to forge new global partnerships and export low-carbon energy solutions to the world,' he said in a statement issued by his ministry on Thursday night. He said Sarawak's integrated strategy revolves around four strategic hubs – renewable energy, natural gas, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and hydrogen – each designed to foster regional resilience and sustainable growth. 'With over 70 per cent of the electricity already derived from hydropower, Sarawak is on track to further expand its renewable energy capacity by 2030 and 2035,' he said. He said Sarawak solidified its role as the 'Battery of Asean' by actively pursuing regional power exports to West Kalimantan, Brunei, Sabah and soon, Singapore. Furthermore, Sarawak leads Malaysia in natural gas reserves and CCS potential. It is also pioneering hydrogen development with flagship projects and dedicated legislation to attract global investors. Meanwhile, Sarawak Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Datuk Seri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel said global platforms like EEC play a crucial role in establishing resilient energy ecosystems. 'Our presence here in Aberdeen is a statement of intent. Sarawak is open for business, open for innovation, and ready to lead in clean energy exports,' he said. At the conference, Sarawak Energy Bhd shared its long-term sustainability agenda and cross-border grid integration plans while Sarawak Economic Development Corporation's subsidiary, SEDC Energy, highlighted ongoing collaborations with Japanese and South Korean partners to develop hydrogen and ammonia export capabilities. 'These initiatives underscore Sarawak's commitment to innovation and international partnerships. Supported by comprehensive policies and strategic roadmaps, Sarawak's clean energy initiatives are unlocking new investment opportunities and creating high-value jobs for a sustainable future. IJN successfully implants dual-chamber leadless pacemaker, a first in Southeast Asia

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The National Heart Institute (IJN) today announced it has successfully implanted the world's first dual-chamber leadless pacemaker system, the Abbott AVEIR™ DR, on several of its patients. Senior consultant cardiologist and interventional electrophysiology & implantable devices clinical director Dr Azlan Hussin said it was also a historic achievement as IJN is the first hospital in Southeast Asia to carry out the procedure. At a press conference today, he said this major achievement reflects IJN's commitment to setting new standards in cardiac care. 'This groundbreaking dual-chamber leadless pacemaker will revolutionise care for our current patients and create a significant opportunity to expand the number of people we can serve, including children. 'By eliminating traditional wires (leads) and surgical pockets, this leadless system significantly reduces the risk of complications such as infections, lead dislodgement, or vessel occlusion,' Azlan said. He added that 18 patients have received the new device, with the first procedure carried out on May 27. According to Azlan, this milestone also builds on IJN's decade-long experience with leadless pacemaker technology, during which nearly 900 patients have undergone procedures involving wireless pacemakers. He said the long-term complication rate is typically 1-2%, comparable to and, in some cases, lower than that of conventional pacemakers. Azlan said the AVEIR™ DR system offers a range of potential benefits, including a shorter procedure time of about 20 minutes to one hour, depending on the patient's heart condition. 'The system also provides real-time pacing analysis, enabling physicians to confirm accurate device placement during the procedure before the final implantation into the heart chamber,' he said. IJN CEO Dr Ezani Taib told reporters the new procedure comes with a slight increase in cost, but that it was normal with any new technology. 'As with any new technology, the initial cost is slightly higher. However, in general, IJN's charges are significantly lower than those at most private hospitals,' he said. When asked if other hospitals in the country could also perform the procedure, Ezani explained that IJN had both the right expertise and infrastructure to offer the service. 'People need to understand this is not just about business. It's about having the clinical expertise, advanced technology, and the right facilities. 'At IJN, innovation isn't just about introducing new technology, it's about creating real, meaningful impact. The AVEIR™ DR implantation marks a leap forward in cardiac care and reinforces our role as a regional leader,' he said. Ezani also emphasised the importance of awareness and early intervention in addressing cardiovascular disease, which remains a significant health challenge in Malaysia. The AVEIR™ DR system, designed for patients with slow or irregular heart rhythms, marks a major breakthrough in cardiac pacing. Unlike traditional pacemakers, the AVEIR™ DR system consists of two miniaturised devices, each one-tenth the size of conventional models, implanted directly into the heart's right atrium and ventricle. In 2018, IJN made history as the first hospital outside the US to implant the world's smallest pacemaker, the Micra AV.
