Sholay At 50: Zoya Akhtar Recalls ‘Emergency Recut Meeting'; Reema Kagti Says 'Mr Bachchan Was...'
50 years ago, on August 15, Bollywood's most iconic films, Sholay, hit the screens. It was the highest-grossing Indian film at the time and remained so until Hum Aapke Hain Koun released in 1994. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, Sholay is often regarded as one of the greatest and most influential Indian films of all time. Over the years, this curry western became a case study for filmmakers across the globe.
Sure, Sholay is remembered for Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru's (Dharmendra) friendship, Veeru and Basanti's (Hema Malini) endearing and impish chemistry, Jai and Radha's (Jaya Bachchan) unspoken love, Thakur's (Sanjeev Kumar) dialogue baazi and Amjad Khan's menacing portrayal of dacoit Gabbar Singh. But it was also about its secondary characters, Soorma Bhopali (Jagdeep), Mausi (Leela Mishra), Kaalia (Viju Khote) and Samba (Mac Mohan), who won commercial recognition like never before.
The cherry on the cake was RD Burman's magical melodies – Yeh Dosti, Mehbooba Mehbooba, Haa Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Koi Haseena and Holi Ke Din – all of which have aged like fine wine. But as reiterated in Angry Young Men, Sholay wasn't an instant blockbuster. The film also opened to scathing reviews from critics. And to mark its golden jubilee, Sholay co-writer Javed Akhtar's daughter and filmmaker Zoya Akhtar exclusively spoke to News18 Showsha recalling the time when many declared the film a flop.
'When Sholay released, I was three or four. So, I don't remember anything. But later, we found out that when it released, no one was going in to the theatre. There was an emergency meeting that took place at either Mr Bachchan or Mr Sippy's house. They wondered if they should change the end, recut the film or take certain scenes out. But then they decided to wait and give it sometime and not jump the gun," she told us.
However, soon, Sholay became an overnight sensation. 'It took the film a week to pick up and then it ran for seven years at a theatre. It was word-of-mouth that changed everything. It's important that theatres give films time to grow," Zoya remarked. As for her business partner and Tiger Baby Films' co-founder Reema Kagti, Sholay influenced the filmmaker in her 'tremendously'. 'Growing up, Mr Bachchan, for me, was the ultimate hero. It's one of my favourite films," she stated.
She added, 'I've very clear memories of bugging my mom, wanting to watch the film over and over again. A lot of Salim-Javed films were a huge part of my growing up years." So, what was it about Sholay that in particular resonated with her? 'I believe that it's the ultimate story of friendship. I don't remember another film that made me feel so sad. I was very sad when Jai died in the film," Reema said.
The Superboys Of Malegaon and Dahaad director continued, 'As a child, I only remember watching films with a happy ending. It was one of the first films I watched where one of the main leads die and that too in such a heroic way. I also remember Jai's double-headed coin toss. The film definitely added to my love for dramas. All the characters are so memorable. Sholay is magical!"

Mukesh Khanna Warns Against Ranveer Singh As Shaktimaan: 'He Is Not Mature Enough...'
Mukesh Khanna has rejected the idea of Ranveer Singh playing Shaktimaan in Sony's upcoming film. Mukesh Khanna, who became a household name in the 1990s as Shaktimaan, continues to guard the legacy of India's first iconic superhero with fierce protectiveness. While Sony Pictures announced in 2022 that the cult TV show would be revived as a film trilogy, casting has become the biggest point of contention. Reports suggest the studio wants Ranveer Singh to headline the project, but Khanna has made it abundantly clear that he does not see him as the right fit for the role. In a recent interaction with Filmygyan, Khanna responded to a fan urging him to accept Ranveer Singh as Shaktimaan. His reply was blunt, 'You can't change my mind. You like Ranveer Singh, and I like him too. We've sat and talked for three hours, and he's a very energetic actor. But I have openly said to his face: you can play Tamraj Kilvish. His face has a mischievous positivity. If you make him Shaktimaan, people may enjoy it because he makes you dance, but the role needs someone mature enough." Khanna emphasized that casting Shaktimaan goes beyond acting ability—it requires an actor's real-life image to align with the purity of the superhero. He said, 'Mujhe Shaktimaan ke liye actor nahi chahiye, face bhi chahiye. Kahin na kahin real-life mein agar aapki image galat hai, toh woh beech mein aati hai. Kayi log mujhe Ranveer Singh ke liye bolte hai ki 'Arrey sahab, yeh nashedi ko Shaktimaan mat banana, humare bachpan ki yaadien khatam ho jaayengi.'" The original Shaktimaan aired on Doordarshan from 1997 to 2005 and ran for 450 episodes. Apart from Khanna in the dual role of Shaktimaan and his bumbling alter ego, Gangadhar, the show starred Kitu Gidwani, Vaishnavi, Surendra Pal, and Tom Alter. Its popularity cemented it as a pioneer of the Indian superhero genre, with reruns and nostalgia still fueling its cult following. The Big Screen Battle When Sony Pictures announced Shaktimaan: The Movie, the teaser promised a trilogy and described it as the grand revival of India's very own superhero. However, disagreements over casting have sparked debate. Khanna insists Ranveer Singh isn't suited for the role, while director Basil Joseph, reportedly attached to helm the project, has doubled down on Singh's involvement. Speaking to Subhash K. Jha for Bollywood Hungama, Joseph said, 'No one else is doing Shaktimaan. It is Ranveer Singh and no one else. Whoever is spreading rumours of his replacement clearly has their own agenda." What's Next for Ranveer Singh? Even as speculation swirls around Shaktimaan, Ranveer Singh is preparing for the release of Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar. The film, co-starring Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and Arjun Rampal, is slated to hit theatres on December 5. With Mukesh Khanna and Basil Joseph on opposite ends of the casting debate, the future of Shaktimaan remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that the role continues to hold an unmatched emotional weight for generations of Indian audiences—and whoever dons the superhero's iconic maroon suit will be stepping into one of the most cherished legacies of Indian television. The Indian expat known as the 'real-life Gafoor' left UAE after decades of helping jobseekers and received a grand welcome in Kerala.(Instagram/siyotechtravel ) Check out the clip here: Fondly called the 'Real-life Gafoor' Thayyil Abdul Gafoor, 64, is widely known as the 'real-life Gafoor' among Malayalis, a name earned for his generosity in securing jobs for others. The title draws a contrast with the fictional conman Gafoor from the 1980s Malayalam cult comedy classic Nadodikkattu. According to a Gulf News report, Gafoor bid farewell to Dubai last week after multiple parties organised by his friends and colleagues. Upon arrival at Calicut International Airport, he was greeted by a surprise reception. A busload of well-wishers shouting slogans rented a state-run KSRTC bus to carry him to his village, Maruthinchira, in Malappuram district. A celebration fit for a local hero As Gafoor entered his village aboard the bus, an escort vehicle announced through loudspeakers, 'Our own Gafoorka has landed.' His arrival was marked by a drum ensemble, followed by a public reception attended by local officials and residents. A tribute video highlighting his life's journey was also screened. The reception was organised by members of his neighbourhood group, the KKB Group, to honour the man who, unlike his on-screen namesake played by the late comedian Mamukkoya, truly changed lives. 'It is all thanks to Dubai' Speaking from Maruthinchira, Gafoor told Gulf News he was overwhelmed by the grand welcome. 'It is all thanks to Dubai,' he said. 'I reached heights that I had never imagined I would because of Dubai's generosity. If anyone's life has changed because of me, it is all thanks to Dubai. I have only been a catalyst.' He added, 'I am always grateful to Dubai and the UAE for providing livelihood to not just me, but millions of Indians, especially those from Kerala. In my case, it is the fourth generation that is calling the UAE home now.' Looking ahead in Kerala Community members said Gafoor personally helped dozens from his town with paperwork and references for employment in Dubai. While he admitted he never kept count, he credited his wife of 45 years for connecting many job seekers through her network. Now back in Kerala, Gafoor plans to enjoy his homeland, reconnect with people, and oversee a company producing Arabic breads, which he had started 15 years ago. 'I've spent a lifetime building a career and helping others. Now it's time to explore life in Kerala,' he said.

Vinayaka Chaviti festivities in Kurnool to celebrate success of ‘Operation Sindoor'
Vinayaka Chaviti festivities in Kurnool district this year will be held with the theme of 'Operation Sindoor', the successful operation carried out by the Indian defence forces against terror operatives in Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack. The Sri Ganesh Mahotsav Kendra Samithi, Kurnool, which has been organising Ganesh festivities for the past 44 years, reviewed preparations for the celebrations at a meeting held in the city on Saturday. Speaking to the media, members of the Utsava Samithi said that a different theme is chosen each year, and this time the pandals will highlight the courage and valour of Indian soldiers during Operation Sindoor. 'This year's celebrations are dedicated to our defence forces who displayed exemplary bravery and showcased the strength of the nation to the world,' the members said. The Samithi general secretary Gorantla Ramana recalled that Ganesh festivities in the public sphere were first initiated by freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak to unite Hindu youth during the freedom movement. He called upon the youth of Kurnool to actively participate in the celebrations with devotion and discipline. He further stressed the importance of environmental protection, urging organisers to install eco-friendly clay Ganesh idols, maintain cleanliness around pandals, and ensure a hygienic atmosphere during the festival. Cultural and devotional programmes, including rangoli competitions, bhajans, Harikathas, and various competitions, will mark the celebrations. The festivities will be held from August 27 to September 4, while essay writing, painting, and clay Ganesh idol-making competitions are scheduled for August 24.
