AUC Publishes 38th Issue oF Arab Media & Society on 'Media & Conflict'
Arab Media & Society, the Scopus-indexed, open-access journal of the Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism at the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP), the American University in Cairo (AUC), announces the release of its 38th issue on the subject of 'Media & Conflict.'
The Arab world has been shaped for decades by conflicts—whether born of occupation, conquest, or civil strife—whose impact cannot be overstated. Regional and international media play a pivotal role in shaping how these conflicts are perceived, understood, and acted upon by audiences both at home and abroad.
In recent years, the evolving media landscape has reshaped public attitudes, widening the gap between state-controlled narratives and the often graphic, unfiltered images circulating across digital platforms from myriad sources.
This divide is most starkly evident in coverage of the war on Gaza, but also in the limited reporting on conflicts in Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, as well as in the contrasting narratives between the war in Ukraine and those emerging from the Arab region.
'This issue of Arab Media & Society comes at a time when the role of media in shaping narratives around conflict has never been more critical,' said Hussein Amin, professor of Journalism and Mass Communication and director of the Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism.
'By bringing together diverse voices from across the Arab world and beyond, we aim to provide a deeper, more nuanced understanding of how wars and crises are reported, perceived, and remembered.'
The articles in this issue explore the complex dynamics of conflict and war through a mediated lens. Contributions from across the region and beyond address the Israeli Palestinian conflict through academic analysis, examine media framing of women, and capture journalists' perspectives.
Other studies investigate coverage of the Syrian crisis both on the ground and in digital media content influencing Syrian refugees in Türkiye.
The issue also analyzes hyperreality and the spread of fake news in the contexts of Ukraine and Palestine, explores social media newsroom integration in local conflict reporting in Oman, and presents a social network analysis of transnational protests opposing the war in Gaza."
This issue showcases a wide range of approaches to studying media in the context of regional conflict, bringing together the work of both Arab and international scholars.

OPEN// FM stresses urgent need to mobilize int'l support for Gaza reconstruction plan
CAIRO, Aug 17 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty stressed on Sunday the urgent need to sustain international support for implementing the Arab plan for Gaza's reconstruction, which outlines requirements for early recovery, infrastructure rebuilding, and restoring basic services as a prelude to the enclave's long-term development. Abdelatty made the remarks during his meeting in New Alamein city with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa, in the presence of Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy and Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Mohamed Ayman Ashour. Abdelatty reviewed preparations for the upcoming Cairo Conference on Gaza Early Recovery and Reconstruction to be convened once a ceasefire is reached, with both sides discussing detailed arrangements for the event. The minister reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering support for the Palestinian people in obtaining their legitimate rights and establishing their independent state, while also updating on Egypt's mediation efforts to secure a ceasefire. He stressed Egypt's categorical rejection of any displacement of Palestinians, denouncing Israel's policy of starvation and blockade in Gaza, as well as its systematic settlement expansion and violations in the occupied territories. The minister underlined Egypt's commitment to supporting the Palestinian Authority (PA) to enable it to assume its responsibilities in both Gaza and the West Bank, highlighting the need to activate a temporary Gaza management committee until the PA fully resumes its role in the Strip. He also voiced Egypt's readiness to help restore order by training Palestinian police forces to fill the security vacuum in Gaza. For her part, Minister Maya Morsy outlined Egypt's humanitarian efforts in Gaza, noting that the Egyptian Red Crescent has facilitated the entry of tens of thousands of aid trucks through the Rafah border crossing carrying hundreds of thousands of tons of relief supplies, alongside dozens of ambulances. Egypt has also treated thousands of injured and ill Palestinians at its hospitals, she added. Meanwhile, Minister Ashour reviewed the executive framework and program documents for the reconstruction plan, emphasizing the importance of ensuring effectiveness and sustainability across infrastructure, services, social protection, economic development, and local governance. He confirmed ongoing coordination with Palestinian counterparts to finalize the plan in its complete form. The Palestinian premier hailed Egypt's leading role in supporting the Palestinian cause and substantial humanitarian efforts in delivering aid to Gaza, praising Cairo's initiative in drafting the Arab plan for Gaza reconstruction and its work on early recovery. Israeli War Crime: Child Killed in Gaza by Israeli Drone Strike

Over 42,000 Pro-Palestine Protests in Europe During 675 Days of Gaza Genocide
✍️ Written by Mohamed El-Sayed Rashid Unprecedented European Solidarity The European Palestinian Media Center (EPAL) reported that Europe has witnessed nearly 42,000 demonstrations and solidarity events in support of the Palestinian cause during 675 days of Israeli genocide in Gaza, starting from October 7, 2023. These events took place in over 700 cities across 20 European countries, with participation from various nationalities, political parties, and members of parliament — all denouncing Israel's genocidal campaign. Shaping European Discourse EPAL highlighted that these mass protests have had a substantial impact on European public opinion and politics, fostering Israel's cultural and academic isolation and boosting support for the Palestinian narrative over the long-dominant Israeli one. Maher Hijazi, a board member of EPAL, explained that the center documents these events through a network of reporters, collaborators, and volunteers, and also shares them live via its media platforms.
