Hoarding covering Sir John A. Macdonald statue at Queen's Park to be removed
TORONTO — Hoarding that has covered a statue of Sir John A. Macdonald on the grounds of the Ontario legislature for the past five years is set to soon be removed.
The statue of Canada's first prime minister has been boxed up since 2020, when it was vandalized.
The monument was one of many to be targeted across the country amid anti-racism protests and as Canadians grappled with the history of residential schools.

Macdonald is considered an architect of the country's notorious residential school system that took Indigenous children from their families in an effort to assimilate them.
Progressive Conservative and Liberal members of a non-partisan board of the legislative assembly agreed earlier this month on a motion to remove the hoarding after the statue is cleaned.
Speaker Donna Skelly says the statue should be ready this summer and she welcomes both supporters and protesters to come to Queen's Park.
Government House Leader Steve Clark says a legislative committee has been tasked with looking at how to respect Indigenous representation at Queen's Park amid a project to rehabilitate the building.

Ottawa taps Cohere to work on use of AI in public service
OTTAWA – The federal government has signed an agreement with a Canadian artificial intelligence company to identify areas where AI can enhance public service operations. The government says the agreement also involves looking at building Canada's commercial capabilities to use and export AI. The government release provided few details about what exactly Cohere will do. However using artificial intelligence to increase efficiency in the public service was one of Prime Minister Mark Carney's election promises. In a blog post Cohere says it signed the memorandum of understanding with the government to transform the public sector with its AI technology. City's first-ever Stuff-a-Bus school campaign to help prepare Edmonton students

(File) The city has partnered with two organizations to collect the essentials Edmonton students need to succeed in the upcoming school year. Staples and United Way have joined Edmonton for its first-ever Stuff-a-Bus for Schools campaign, a spinoff of the city's Stuff-a-Bus food donation campaign that's run during the holidays for the past 30 years. Until Aug. 22, Edmontonians can drop off school supplies in donation boxes located at any city-run centre. On Aug. 23 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., donations can be brought to buses parked outside all eight Staples locations in the city. Cash, credit and debit donations will be accepted on-site on Aug. 23. Most-needed items include: backpacks; pencils, pens, erasers; binders, dividers, paper; notebooks, duo-tangs; crayons, pencil crayons; highlighters, markers; and scissors, glue sticks, rulers. A list of locations to donate and more information can be found on the city's website.

Witnesses sharing video of alleged arson online should contact investigators, Richmond RCMP say

(Shutterstock) Mounties in Richmond are asking people sharing video of an alleged arsonist online to contact investigators directly if they haven't already. A person of interest has been identified in the incident, which occurred around 1:20 a.m. Sunday at a store in the 8300 block of Granville Avenue, Richmond RCMP said in a news release Tuesday. An employee reported the fire, which had allegedly been deliberately set outside the building, according to police, who said no one was injured in the arson attempt. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. 'Our investigators are aware of footage circulating on social media,' said Cpl. Melissa Lui, in the news release. 'While we appreciate the concern being shown, we ask anyone who has video footage or information about this incident to contact police investigators directly. Sharing information with us will ensure it becomes part of the official investigation and helps hold those responsible accountable.' Those with information to share should call Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 25-26618, police said. Tips can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
