Is Outlook down? Millions report login issues — When will Microsoft fix it?
Login Failures and Mailbox Errors Spark Confusion
Thousands of users reported being unable to log in to their Outlook or Hotmail accounts. Many were met with error messages stating 'something went wrong' or were informed that they lacked a valid license to use the service.
Outage monitoring website DownDetector recorded a surge in complaints, indicating issues with login, server connection, and mailbox accessibility. Microsoft later confirmed the problem, stating: 'Users may be unable to access their mailbox using any connection method.'

Adding to the confusion, some users reported sluggish performance even when they managed to log in, describing the service as 'painfully slow.' The problem appears to be widespread but isolated to Microsoft Outlook and Hotmail, with other Microsoft services such as Teams, Skype, and Microsoft 365 reportedly functioning normally.
Fix Underway, But Timeline Remains Uncertain
In a brief update, Microsoft acknowledged the disruption: 'We're having issues, but we're working on it.' A later service status message indicated that engineers had identified the root cause and had initiated the deployment of a fix, but noted that it would take time due to the need to follow 'safe change management processes.'
Live Events
At the time of filing this report, there was no formal update on Microsoft's social media channels regarding when normal service would resume. The silence sparked frustration online, with many users turning to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to vent.
Global Impact, Local Concerns
The issue appears to be affecting users worldwide. Social media was flooded with complaints from across the United States, Germany, India, and other regions, with professionals and businesses expressing alarm over being unable to access crucial emails.
'#Outlook seems to be down this morning — I'm unable to access any emails. Is there any information on when the service will be available again?' asked a user in Germany.
Another user posted: 'Seems Outlook has been down globally for multiple hours. Can't log in on desktop or web or app. And no word yet from @Outlook or @Microsoft.'
Criticism also emerged about Microsoft's handling of communication. One user wrote: 'Came all the way to X to find why Outlook.com service was failing. There was NOTHING there to tell me.'
No Indication of Cyberattack So Far
Speculation swirled around the cause of the outage, with some questioning whether a cyberattack was behind the disruption. However, experts and Microsoft's preliminary communications suggest the issue may be more technical than malicious.
A similar incident in June had been attributed to a glitch in the Forms Library, which caused Outlook to crash. Technical lapses and problematic software updates have been part of Microsoft's recent history, including Windows firewall issues and update-related bugs in Windows 11.
This time, Microsoft has not linked the issue to any known security update or planned change. Some online speculation had tried to associate the incident with the forthcoming deletion of passwords by the Microsoft Authenticator app in August, but there is no evidence to suggest the two events are related.
Outlook's Dependability Questioned
With Outlook serving millions globally—including businesses, government offices, and academic institutions—the outage has raised concerns about over-reliance on centralized email infrastructure. While service interruptions are not uncommon in digital services, the lack of transparent communication has left users in the dark.
The Microsoft Office Service Health portal currently flags the
Outlook outage
as an active issue, with a message assuring users that the company is working to restore normalcy. However, no estimated time of resolution has been provided.
What's Next for Outlook Users?
As of now, users have little choice but to wait for Microsoft's fix to be fully deployed. Businesses dependent on Outlook for internal and external communication have been forced to resort to alternative platforms or delay operations.

OpenAI eyes $500 bn valuation in potential employee share sale
ChatGPT maker OpenAI is in early-stage discussions about a stock sale that would allow employees to cash out and could value the company at about $500 billion, a source familiar with the matter said. That would represent an eye-popping bump-up from its current valuation of $300 billion, with the sale underscoring both OpenAI's rapid gains in users and revenue as well as the intense competition among artificial intelligence firms to secure talented workers. The transaction, which would come before a potential IPO, would allow current and former employees to sell several billion dollars worth of shares, said the source, who requested anonymity because the talks are private. Bolstered by its flagship product ChatGPT, OpenAI doubled its revenue in the first seven months of the year, reaching an annualised run rate of $12 billion, and is on track to reach $20 billion by year-end, the source added. Microsoft-backed OpenAI has about 700 million weekly active users for its ChatGPT products, a surge from about 400 million in February. The share sale talks come on the heels of OpenAI's primary funding round announced earlier this year, which aims to raise $40 billion, led by Japan's SoftBank Group. SoftBank has until the end of the year to fund its $22.5 billion portion of the round, but the remainder has been subscribed at a valuation of $300 billion, the source said. 42k Maha Card Rides in a Day: Digital Surge Ahead of Metro's Open-Loop Upgrade
Nagpur: MahaMetro's digital push is paying off, with a record-breaking 42,257 commuters using Maha Cards on August 5 — the highest single-day usage since the system was launched in 2019. The number accounted for 39% of Nagpur Metro 's daily ridership, which stood at 1.07 lakh that day. Digital ticketing as a whole also hit a new milestone, with 56% of commuters opting for cashless travel via Maha Cards, QR codes, and mobile apps. Officials said the spike signals a major behavioural shift among daily riders towards faster, more convenient travel. The Maha Card, a co-branded contactless smart card developed in partnership with State Bank of India, has been the backbone of Nagpur Metro's cashless journey since Phase 1. Currently, over 1.10 lakh passengers hold active Maha Cards, with an average of two new cards issued daily per station. Commuters benefit from fare concessions of 10% for regular passengers and 30% for students, making it a preferred option. The latest surge follows Maha Metro's recent promotional drive launched on July 25, offering free Maha Cards with a Rs200 recharge. The campaign has already led to the distribution of more than 1,300 new cards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo This record comes at a time the Maha Card is set to evolve. As part of Phase 2 of the Nagpur Metro project, Maha Metro is preparing to shift to a Rs154 crore Open Loop Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system. Unlike the current closed-loop Maha Card, which works only within the Nagpur Metro network, the upcoming system will support National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC). The NCMC system will allow seamless, interoperable travel across metros, buses, and other public transport systems in India. EMV-based and bank-issued, these cards will function like debit cards, enabling commuters to use a single card across cities and modes of transport. Maha Metro has already floated a tender for the supply, installation, and commissioning of the new system, which also includes QR code-based ticketing and a long-term maintenance contract. Importantly, officials said existing AFC gates installed in Phase 1 stations won't require replacement; only a software upgrade will be needed to support the new format. "Even the existing Maha Cards may continue after the rollout of the NCMC cards. However, the open-loop card system is still in its early stages, so it's too soon to say exactly how it will work out. If possible, we'll integrate the new system by upgrading the existing AFC infrastructure to support both old and new cards. Otherwise, we may have to phase out the old cards and issue new ones to commuters. However, nothing is final at this point, as the entire process is still at a preliminary stage," said a Maha Metro official. As Maha Card usage peaks, the city's metro commuters are already riding the wave of digital convenience — and the next upgrade promises to take that a step further, far beyond city limits.
