Inside the ghost museums of Ukraine: exhibits replaced by fragments of war and occupation

The museum of local history in the eastern Ukrainian town of Izium has, like the community around it, endured much since Russia's full-scale invasion of the country.
When Izium was bitterly fought over in early 2022 at the start of the Russian assault, the 19th-century building suffered two direct hits from missiles that blew out the roof and led to flood damage. Under occupation from March to September 2022, a Russian guard was posted on the door – but invaders never transported its collection any deeper behind Russian lines, or found the rare early 18th-century volume of the gospels – one of only three of its type – that museum workers had spirited away and hidden.
The museum is now back in Ukrainian hands but remains in a fragile, vulnerable state, uncomfortably close to the frontline and the threat of reoccupation. The roof is repaired, says the director, Halyna Ivanova, but there is no point re-glazing the windows while the city is hit night after night by missiles.
The bulk of the collection has now been safely evacuated and its precious volume of the gospels, which was also concealed from German invaders during the second world war when the museum and its collection were almost completely destroyed, is being conserved after its time in hiding.
At the moment, the institution is a kind of ghost museum. Its collection is absent; its doors are closed to the public because of the danger of attacks; and its community, whose collective memory it holds, has shrunk to half of its 40,000 pre-invasion number.
But there is still much work to do, says Ivanova. The museum staff now run walking tours of the city's shattered historical buildings. They host temporary exhibitions inside damaged rooms ('loft style', she jokes, of the rough walls and improvised feel), even if its visitors are now confined to local military personnel and invited guests.
'We are trying preserve memories, to fix them,' she says. 'To show people how the city was before the war, what has happened to it – and how it looks now.'
On display are paintings by local artists, and photography by soldiers stationed nearby, part of a nascent collection of audio, video and images from the military that the museum is amassing.
One room holds a display devoted to significant local individuals. One is the murdered children's writer Volodymyr Vakulenko, who buried his diary of life under occupation beneath a cherry tree in his village before being arrested and shot dead. Another is 'a firefighter who was also delivering aid around the city, who died as a result of a cluster bomb'.
Ivanova says: 'He was my neighbour and I knew him all his life; I saw him born and I saw him die.'
She is also building a 'museum of occupation': collecting objects left by the invaders. 'So there is proof of their presence here – and proof of the crimes they committed.'
Some of this new collection is on display. There is part of a cluster munition rocket; the uniforms and helmets of Russians, as well as those from their proxy state, the so-called Donetsk People's Republic; Russian ration packs and cigarettes – 'brands I haven't seen since I smoked them 30 years ago before the fall of the Soviet Union', says Ivanova.
Antique-looking crutches and superannuated tourniquets attest to the out-of-date supplies of some of the invading army. There are aid packs branded as donated by the Russian tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod; school textbooks for primary-age children showing Russia as the motherland and Moscow as 'the capital of our country'; and fragments of a stone-carved memorial erected to mark the grave of a Russian colonel 'that shows', says Ivanova, 'that they thought they were going to stay for ever'.
Propaganda news sheets are on display, as is a photograph of a visit by a prominent Russian propagandist surrounded by local collaborators. 'One is in Russia, one is being searched for by police here, and the two women are in prison,' says Ivanova.
There is evidence of some bleak humour: a homemade Russian medal crudely carved from a piece of wood and awarded 'for all this shit'.
The Izium museum is not the only such institution to be in a vulnerable position. Farther south, in the Donetsk region, lies the great monastery complex of the Sviatohirsk Lavra, rising dramatically up from the cliffs above the Siverskyi Donets River.
The site, which has medieval origins, is shared between monks and nuns of the Ukrainian Orthodox church and has a museum run by the Ukrainian state. (The church, which has historic ties to Moscow, declared its formal separation from the Russian Orthodox church in 2022, though many observers consider the separation incomplete or ambiguous.)
Displaced people are living in buildings that form part of the estate, some of whom have been here since 2014, when the conflict first broke out in the region.
Yaroslava Diedova, the museum's deputy director, lost her boss to the Russian invaders. The director and her family were killed when their car was hit by a missile as they tried to evacuate.
Four monks were also killed when a missile smashed into one of the monastery's accommodation blocks in March 2022, and three construction workers died in a later attack, says the monastery's Fr Trofim.
The town of Sviatohirsk, across the river from the monastery, was occupied by the Russians in June 2022 and the bridge linking them was blown up; when Diedova came back to work after it was recaptured by Ukraine that September, it was an 11km walk to work via another bridge, until they organised a boat and finally a new bridge was built.
On a hill next to the monastery's great rock stands a 22-metre high concrete sculpture of Artyom – the nickname of the Bolshevik revolutionary Fyodor Sergeyev. The colossal statue became a Ukrainian reconnaissance and gun position, and the area around it is heavily mined.
The sculpture, scarred by shrapnel, is exempted from Ukraine's decommunisation laws – which would otherwise demand its removal – because of its status as a significant artwork by the early 20th-century Ukrainian sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze.
These days, part of the job of the museum, says Diedova, is to host creative workshops for refugee children living at the monastery, as well as guided tours for soldiers, 'because it's important to show them what they are actually fighting for. Those who come from the region have generally visited as children, but now there are soldiers from all across Ukraine here.'
Sometimes the soldiers pause to pray in the churches, 'then they come here to the museum and drink tea and talk; there is a chance for a sort of psychological unloading', says the new director, Ihor Saletskiy.
'Compared to some of the museums in the Donetsk region, who can transport their collection anywhere, we are a little different. Our main objects are the caves, the churches – not movable things. That's why we're staying here, and working with the monastery,' he says.
Back in Izium, despite the general air of ruin, the fountains are working in the park and school leavers, dressed in their prom outfits, are posing for photographs against the backdrop of their once-handsome school, now a battered shell.
'We are living as we lived before: the only difference is that we have to run for the basement at night,' says Ivanova. Compared with the hunger, terror and isolation of life under occupation, she says, it is nothing.
'There is always the possibility that the Russians will come again,' she says. 'If they do, this time it will be like Bakhmut: they will erase it.'
The work of the museum is, she says, 'to save the city in some way – if necessary, in people's memories'.

A 122-year-old message in a bottle hidden inside a wall has been uncovered from one of Australia 's oldest lighthouses in Tasmania, sparking interest from historians. The rare find was made earlier this week at Cape Bruny Lighthouse in Tasmania by a specialist painter, Brian Burford, during routine conservation work on the lantern room of the heritage-listed lighthouse on Bruny Island. Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) said the painter noticed 'something unusual' while treating a badly rusted section of the wall and, on closer inspection, realised it was a glass bottle containing a letter. The bottle was brought to Hobart, where conservators from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) carefully opened it, cutting through a cork coated in bitumen before extracting the fragile contents. Inside was an envelope with a two-page handwritten letter dated 29 January 1903, written by James Robert Meech, then Inspector of Lighthouses for the Hobart Marine Board. The letter details significant upgrades carried out at the lighthouse, including the installation of a new iron spiral staircase to replace a wooden one, a new concrete floor, and a replacement lantern room. It also records changes to the light's flash sequence, 'three seconds of light followed by nineteen and a half seconds of darkness', replacing a 50-second cycle, and lists the names of the keepers and workers involved in the project. According to PWS, the works cost the Marine Board £2,200, equivalent to around $474,000 AUD today. PWS Manager for Historic Heritage Annita Waghorn said the condition of the message was remarkable. 'You could feel the excitement in the room when the letter came out in one piece,' she said. 'This letter gives us an insight into the works that happened at the lighthouse and the people who undertook this work. This information adds to the rich history of Bruny Island and the Cape Bruny Lighthouse.' TMAG conservators used a humidification process to relax and flatten the old paper for preservation. The letter will eventually go on public display, but the location is yet to be confirmed. The Cape Bruny Lighthouse, first lit in 1838, guided ships through some of Australia 's most treacherous waters for over 150 years before being decommissioned in 1996 and replaced by a nearby solar-powered light. The find has surprised historians, with PWS officials, as no one had accessed the sealed wall space since the lantern room was installed in 1903. Local media described it as 'one of the most significant lighthouse-related discoveries in years', offering a rare time capsule from the state's maritime past.

‘Ukraine doesn't forget its cultural landmarks': the team risking their lives to rescue statues from the frontline

A bearded expert and a group of Ukrainian soldiers arrived in the village of Slovianka on a special mission. Their goal did not involve shooting at invading Russian forces. Instead, they had come to rescue a unique piece of history before it could be swallowed up by war and a frontline creeping closer. The soldiers placed a giant object a wooden pallet. It was a carved stone figure created about 800 years ago. The sculpture – of a woman holding a ceremonial pot, wearing a necklace and with tiny legs – was lifted gently on to a flatbed truck. 'We didn't think we would have to evacuate it. But we do. It's sad,' Yurii Fanyhin, who coordinated the operation, explained. Today Slovianka is a small farmland community, not far from the administrative border between Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk oblasts. In the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, however, it was at the centre of a vast steppe route. A Turkic nomadic people – known as the Cumans or Polovtsy – flourished here, north of the Black Sea. They were formidable and skilled warriors. Their world survives in the form of elaborate funerary statues known as babas, which once littered the landscape of southern Ukraine. Each represents a dead individual. There are fighters depicted with weapons, helmets and belts. And – unusually for the early medieval period – there are many women. Some wear jewellery; one is pregnant; all have hair hidden under a hat. In spring 2024, Fanyhin and his soldier-volunteers travelled to the under-fire city of Velika Novosilka, now under Russian occupation. They retrieved a sculpture hit by shrapnel. Other figures standing on a hill were damaged when the Russians seized the north-eastern city of Izium. So far the team has rescued 11 babas. They have been transported west to Dnipro's national history museum. The museum has more than 100 Polovtsian sculptures. It is the world's biggest collection. Some are in good condition. Others – after centuries of rain and snow – have lost many of their features, their smooth heads and torsos reminiscent of abstract works by the 20th-century sculptor Henry Moore. The outside pavilion where they are kept recently lost some of its glass, when a Russian missile landed nearby. The museum's director Oleksandr Starik said he was hopeful the British Museum or another international institution could help conserve and restore the statues. At a time of conflict, there was little Ukrainian government funding available for culture, he acknowledged. The babas were not only sacred national heritage but disproved the claim that Ukraine did not exist and was a part of 'historical' Russia, he added. In 2022, Vladimir Putin used this false idea to justify his invasion. 'It's important for Russia to show that only Slavs lived on this territory and no one else. In fact, the steppe was mixed. There were many different ethnicities,' Starik said. He added: 'Our task is to show that it's our ancestors who lived there. They were nomads who moved all the time and were not connected with the Russian imperium.' The Cumans placed their statues on mounds, as close to the heavens as possible. According to Starik, the figures showed the boundaries of different tribes and were used as easy-to-spot steppe markers. The figures were seen as alive, and as a way of communicating with ancestors, in accordance with shamanist religious traditions. Sacrifices were carried out at the sites, Starik suggested. Of Putin's attempted conquest of Ukraine, he said: 'It's colonial politics. The empire doesn't work unless you seize new territory.' He continued: 'It was important for us to save the statues. The enemy doesn't care about them. The Russians are completely indifferent to the past. They keep smashing up our monuments using artillery and bombs.' Two of the babas were retrieved from the town of Mezhova, now only 15kms from the frontline, on the eastern edge of Dnipropetrovsk oblast. Earlier this month a Russian drone blew up a civilian minibus and a glide bomb destroyed the town's school. In 2014, statues were lost when Russia staged a covert part-takeover of the eastern Donbas region, seizing the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk and their museum artefacts. Yevhen Khrypun, the editor of the local Mezhivskyi Merydian newspaper, said the sculptures were fascinating because they were a concrete representation of a living person. 'The idea that the Polovtsy are our ancestors is not very scientific, to be honest. Earlier we had Scythians, Sarmatians and Cimmerians. It's more symbolic: these were all people who lived on our lands,' he said. Not everyone is happy to see the sculptures moved to safer areas. Last weekend, after the female baba was removed, the Slovianka village authorities filed a report with the police. They alleged the sculpture had been stolen. The convoy heading back to Dnipro was stopped for several hours while officers checked documents. 'It was a crazy standoff. They blocked the road with a tractor,' Fanyhin reported. In some cases the statues are impossible to retrieve. One is located outside the city of Kostyantinivka, besieged by Russia. First-person view drones cruise its streets, targeting any vehicle that moves. 'We need help from the military to get it out. But no one wants to risk their life for a statue. I don't want to risk mine either,' Fanyhin said. The historian said the rescue missions had kept him sane, during a stressful period of war and loss. 'In some way the babas saved us,' he said. 'We feel we are doing an important and even a great thing. It shows that Ukraine doesn't forget its cultural landmarks, even statues on the frontline. After our victory, they will be more valuable.'

Bible belonging to ‘father of modern policing' among exhibits for new museum

A Bible which belonged to a man known as the father of modern policing is set to be among exhibits at a new museum planned for Belfast. The Bible, which dates to 1608, belonged to Sir Robert Peel and will be the oldest item on display at the Museum of Policing for Northern Ireland It is hoped the museum will be completed and open to the public by autumn 2028. It is to be run by a new charitable company within the grounds of the existing police headquarters at Knock Road in east Belfast. The Board of Trustees is to include representatives from the PSNI, the Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross Foundation and the Police Historical Society (NI), alongside a number of independent members yet to be appointed. Some £5.5 million has been set aside by government to fund the building project, while a further £385,000 has been secured from the Part-Time RUC Reserve pension settlement. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said it will be a facility for the whole community to enjoy. 'I am delighted that we will be able to progress the building of a new museum here at police headquarters,' he said. 'The museum will offer cross curricula and whole-life learning opportunities for schools, students, adults and community groups through exhibitions, educational programmes and engagement activities. 'This will be a facility that the whole community can enjoy as we highlight the ongoing role of policing in conflict resolution, reconciliation and keeping people safe.' Stephen White, of the RUC GC Foundation, said the stories of police officers will be preserved for future generations. 'The foundation is proud to support this project to make the important role of policing more accessible and visible to our communities,' he said. 'It will exhibit the service and bravery of police officers across the decades and ensure that their stories are preserved for future generations.' George Clarke, of the Police Historical Society (NI), added: 'The Police Historical Society is delighted with plans for a new and fitting museum. 'The new facilities will enable us to present and preserve the many artefacts we hold relating to policing in Ireland. 'Our collection contains approximately 12,000 artefacts of a diverse nature including uniforms, medals and other items telling the story of policing from 1814 to the present day; our oldest exhibit is a Bible from 1608 which belonged to Sir Robert Peel. 'We look forward to these being accessible to the wider public to illustrate the history of policing over more than 200 years.'
