Lucky punter beats the bookies with huge £5,000 payday after rank 150-1 outsider caused stunning upset at Glorious Goodwood
The horse, named Qirat and ridden by Richard Kingscote, caused a huge shock on Wednesday at one of the most prestigious events in the global racing calendar.
The victory, which came after Qirat finished 27th of 30 runners on his last trip to the track, makes the horse the longest-priced winner of a Group One race in Britain since the grading system was introduced in the early 1970s.
And the racer had been backed by three incredibly lucky punters, who no-doubt left the Chichester race course with huge grins on their faces.
One attendee scooped £3750 off a 150-1 punt on Qirat, while another won with a whopping £4500 off a £30 stake.
But it was an unnamed punter from Hampshire who won the biggest return, taking home £5000 after placing £50 on the unlikely winner.
A Paddy Power spokesperson said: 'We've seen some shocks in our time, but this one might top the lot!
'Fair play to the punters who backed Qirat to win, despite it looking a lost cause before the off.
'We'll be reached out to all of them this week and asking their Lotto numbers!'
Such was the surprise of Qirat's victory that even his trainer Ralph Beckett expressed his shock in a post-race interview.
He said: 'He's always threatened to be a good horse, I've just never managed to get it out of him until today.
'We set out to go 12-second furlongs. That was the plan and that's what he did, it's as simple as that.
'They didn't sit close to him and that is the end result. When he went past Serengeti, I could see they were not coming and I was fairly confident he would not stop.'
Despite being rated 24lb inferior to the race's favourite Field of Gold, Qirat eased past him.
John Gosden, the favourite's trainer said: 'He got a little unbalanced coming out of the dip into the bend, but I am not making excuses.
'They ignored the pacemaker and paid the price.'

Oscar Piastri an odds-on favourite to win the Hungarian Grand Prix - while his McLaren teammate Lando Norris is a BOOSTED 2/1 to reign supreme
McLaren's Oscar Piastri is an odds-on favourite at 10/11 to finished first past the chequered flag today - as the Hungaroring racetrack plays host to the Hungarian Grand Prix. Piastri - who sits atop the Drivers' Championship on 266 points - claimed his sixth win of the year at the Belgian Grand Prix last time out. Graham Potter delivers update on Lucas Paqueta's West Ham future - after the Brazilian's two-year spot-fixing nightmare finally came to an end
Graham Potter has discussed Lucas Paqueta's future at West Ham after the midfielder was cleared of spot-fixing charges by the FA following a two-year investigation. Mail Sport broke the story of the FA's probe back in August 2023 when it was suspected Paqueta had been purposefully picking up yellow cards in order to influence betting markets. The 27-year-old was accused of deliberately getting booked in four Premier League games, against Leicester in 2022, and Leeds United, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth the following year. Paqueta reportedly could have faced a lifetime ban from football if he was found guilty. However, on Thursday the 27-year-old was cleared of the spot-fixing charges and he later took to social media to share a defiant post thanking West Ham fans for their support. In the wake of the decision, some reports linked Paqueta with a £30million return to his homeland - with boyhood club Flamengo said to be interested. The 27-year-old had been linked with a return to his native Brazil but Potter suggested the verdict means he is more likely to stay Hammers boss Potter meanwhile is confident the midfielder will remain in East London this summer. 'You never know for sure because anything can happen in the window with anybody,' said Potter. 'But the news is incredibly positive. If it had gone the other way, there would have been a whole other line of questions. 'Lucas is happy and committed. He is an important person in dressing room and at the club and we love him. We just want to help him enjoy his football. 'You can imagine on a personal level for him, having to fight those allegations was an incredible challenge for him. It has been a really tough period in his life and career. 'It is a credit to him and his family and everyone who has supported him that he has come through.'
