In a major step toward strengthening India's air defense capabilities, a Bengaluru-based company has reportedly delivered first of six stealth-detecting radars to Indian Air Force under Rs 200 crore contract. The indigenous Surya Very High Frequency (VHF) radar systems, developed entirely in India, was reportedly handed over in mid-March 2025.The Surya radar is a mobile, solid-state 3D radar system developed to track stealth aircraft and low-observable aerial targets. It operates in the VHF band, which allows it to detect targets that typically evade conventional high-frequency radar systems. Using longer wavelengths, the radar can identify stealth objects by minimising the effect of radar-absorbing materials. It offers a detection range of 360 kilometers for a target with a radar cross-section of 2 square meters and features a staring mode for enhanced tracking.Mounted on two 6×6 vehicles, the radar performs 10 rotations per minute to ensure full coverage. It is designed to support rapid deployment and operations in diverse terrains. The radar's deployment has attracted attention from global defense analysts. Its capacity to detect stealth aircraft, including Chinese J-20 fighters and Wing Loong drones, may influence regional security dynamics. When integrated with other indigenous systems such as Akash and QRSAM missiles, the Surya radar strengthens India's multi-layered defense approach. The delivery follows Operation Sindoor , launched after a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025. During the operation, India's air defense network—including S-400 Sudarshan Chakra, Akash, and Akashteer systems—repelled a large-scale aerial attack involving drones and missiles from Pakistan. The Surya radar's ability to detect stealth threats could have provided critical early warning in such scenarios. It is expected to complement other Indian-made systems like the Ashwini Low-Level Transportable Radar developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).The radar was presented at Aero India 2025, where it drew interest from international delegations. Its potential for export and cooperation with friendly nations positions India as a growing player in defense technology. Vishal Anand, Assistant Vice-President of Projects at Alpha Design had said the radar is designed & developed in BHARAT itself, during the Aero India 2025 show. The Surya VHF radar is seen as a significant addition to India's Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) framework. Integrated with systems like Akashteer, the radar helps enable real-time response to aerial threats. The radar's introduction is aimed at reducing dependence on imported defense technology under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The remaining five radars are expected to be delivered over the next few months.

Rajnath Singh to visit China for SCO meet, first post-Op Sindoor face-off with Pak minister likely

This will be Rajnath Singh's first overseas trip since India launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in May read more Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will travel to China next week to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers' meet in Qingdao from June 25 to 27. This will be his first overseas trip since India launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in May. Interestingly, his Pakistani counterpart Khwaja Asif is also supposed to be present at the summit. India-China working to normalise ties The visit comes as both India and China trudge towards normalisation in their relationship after a protracted period of tensions following deadly clashes in the Himalayas in 2020. Over the past few months, bilateral relations have improved, marked by resumption of trade, travel and dialogue. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar in April told Network 18 that ties between the two Asian giants were 'much better'. 'The relationship is much better than before. I think the disengagement, particularly the Depsang Demchok, was important,' the EAM said. 'We are now addressing, to some extent, the issues on the border because there has been a force build-up over a period of years. Many other things also happened during this period. Some of it was collateral to the situation, and some of it was a carryover from the Covid era,' he said. This visit by the defence minister also coincides with the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which has been facilitated by the Chinese authorities. Rajnath Singh will hold bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Dong Jun, on the sidelines of the SCO summit. India and China are engaged in discussions aimed at further easing border tensions and strengthening bilateral relations. Singh's upcoming meeting follows his earlier interaction with Admiral Dong Jun at the ADMM-Plus summit in Laos, marking their first engagement since the recent border disengagement agreement. This potential visit is part of broader diplomatic efforts to normalise India-China relations, with possible talks on restoring air connectivity, sharing hydrological data, and promoting visa facilitation and people-to-people exchanges. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD During recent discussions in Delhi between Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, India had reaffirmed its support for China's presidency of the SCO. Challenges Despite the recent thaw, challenges still persist in Indo-Sino co-operation. One of the major issues is China's open economic and military support to Pakistan. It was not clear whether Singh would bring up the issue during his upcoming interaction with the Chinese authorities.

China holds key lending rates steady in June despite economic headwinds; here's what we know

China decided to hold its benchmark lending rates steady, as expected, on Friday. Beijing had rolled out many measures last month to make borrowing cheaper and boost the economy. Reuters reported that the one-year loan prime rate (LPR), which influences the interest on most new and outstanding loans, was kept at 3.00 per cent. On the other hand, the five-year LPR, which is important for pricing mortgages, was unchanged at 3.50 per cent, according to a Reuters report. Financial experts and market watchers were pretty confident that China would not change these rates this month. In a recent Reuters poll of 20 market participants, the news agency said, all participants predicted no change to either of the two rates. The decision comes after China already lowered LPRs last month, the first time they did so since October. At that time, major state-owned banks also reduced their deposit rates. These moves were all part of a bigger plan by the authorities to lower borrowing costs and help cushion the Chinese economy, especially from the impact of the trade tensions with the United States, Reuters reported. China's economy is currently dealing with a complex situation. While official figures show robust GDP growth of 5.4 per cent in Q1 2025, with GDP reaching $4.4 trillion, there are ongoing challenges. Economic Times reported that experts remain cautious, citing subdued household demand and weak consumption trends as the cause of deflationary pressure. China's weak domestic demand stems from lower incomes, a weak social security net that leads to people putting more savings towards education and healthcare, and limited alternative investment options due to an underdeveloped stock market. These have pushed households to invest heavily in real estate, the news agency reported. Due to all these issues, China is currently focusing on attracting foreign investors, boosting inward tourism, and strengthening innovation and technology.

Move Over Rafale-5, F-35, Su-57E: India Opens Rs 15,000-Crore Bid To Build 5th Gen Fighter Jets

Last Updated: The govt has issued an EoI for this high-profile project, open to firms, JVs, or consortia. Applications close on August 16, and the project must be completed within 8 years In a significant step towards self-reliance in defence, India has invited companies to develop indigenous fifth-generation fighter jets. The move comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions — with the Russia-Ukraine war dragging on, Israel opening a new front against Iran, and India responding to the Pahalgam terror attack with Operation Sindoor. According to experts, this move means India will no longer have to completely rely on foreign fifth-generation fighter jets like the Rafale-5, F-35, or Su-57E. The government has issued an Expression of Interest for this high-profile project, allowing single companies, joint ventures, or consortia to apply. The initial budget for developing the prototype is set at Rs 15,000 crore, with the potential for subsequent orders running into several thousand crores. 'The objective of this EOI is to shortlist Indian companies (owned and controlled by resident Indian citizens) who are technically capable for the development, building of prototypes, supporting flight test and certification of AMCA (advanced medium combat aircraft)," the EOI document stated. Interested companies must submit their applications by August 16, with a maximum project completion time of eight years. This initiative marks a significant step in India's largest military research endeavour. The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) will evaluate and shortlist established Indian companies with a proven track record in aerospace and defence. To qualify, firms must demonstrate the ability to absorb and implement the AMCA's design, along with experience in key areas such as engineering, manufacturing, system integration, testing, quality assurance, and post-delivery support. Additionally, companies must be capable of setting up infrastructure for full-scale series production of the aircraft. What's The Budget For India's 5th-Gen Jet? fifth-generation fighter jet prototype is developed, the selected company is expected to receive large-scale defence orders in the future. The importance of a fifth-generation aircraft for India cannot be understated. While the country has developed indigenous cruise and ballistic missiles and air defence systems, such as the proven Akash system, the lack of a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet remains a significant gap. The government aims to address this shortfall within the next decade to decade and a half. Which Companies Can Place Their Bets? Potential contenders for this project include both public and private sector companies. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Tata Advanced Systems Limited, Adani Defence, and Larsen & Toubro are all likely candidates to participate in this ambitious endeavour. On May 27, in a major step towards strengthening India's self-reliance in defence and building a strong local aerospace industry, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh gave the green light to the implementation framework for the AMCA programme. The AMCA programme will be carried out by the ADA in collaboration with industry partners. The chosen model ensures a level playing field, encouraging both private and public sector entities to compete on equal terms.
