Pindi bans bird, drone activities near airports

Express Tribune30-05-2025

The Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner on Thursday imposed a ban within a five-kilometer radius of Islamabad International Airport and both military airbases — Nur Khan (Chaklala) Airbase and Qasim Airbase -— due to the potential risk of bird strikes with aircraft.
The restrictions include pigeon flying, keeping pigeons in large cages, kite flying, and the operation of all types of drones. Additionally, the disposal of garbage and animal remains (especially from sacrificial animals) in and around airport premises and aircraft landing/takeoff zones has also been prohibited.
Violations of these orders will result in legal action and arrests.
The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner General Ehsan Tariq who ordered immediate enforcement of the ban. All relevant authorities were instructed to initiate inspection and monitoring operations to ensure strict compliance.
The meeting also reviewed cleanliness measures around the airports during Eidul Azha, specifically in areas such as Khurram Colony, Sadiqabad, Koral Chowk, Dhok Hafiz, and Chah Sultan. Concerned departments were issued directives to maintain hygiene and proper waste management in these areas.

225, not 216 inmates escaped during Malir jailbreak

As many as 225 prisoners had escaped during a bizarre jailbreak at District Malir Jail triggered by chaos during a series of low-intensity earthquakes in the metropolitan city last month, officials disclosed on Tuesday disputing the claims of the previous prison administration which claimed 216 inmates had escaped. The previous jail administration either deliberately concealed the figures or had erred because a recount showed 10 more prisoners were missing, according to a letter written by District Malir Jail Superintendent Shahabuddin Siddiqui to the SP Investigation Department Malir. The previous jail administration had confirmed the escape of 216 prisoners. In his letter, Superintendent Siddiqui, however, wrote that took charge of Malir Jail on June 4, and subsequently conducted a complete count of the prisoners during the Eidul Azha holidays. It transpired that 10 more inmates were missing which means the total number of escapees was 225. The letter stated that 146 prisoners have been rearrested thus far, while 79 are still at large. One prisoner's name was mentioned twice in the escapees' list. He further stated in the letter that action should be taken to arrest the 10 additional escaped prisoners. One of the escapees, identified as Raza Pervaiz Masih, committed suicide in Madina Colony, Maripur, while another prisoner was killed in a shootout during the jailbreak.

Car theft: tracker jammed, vehicle gone

Car lifters stole a vehicle worth millions of rupees from outside a house in DHA Phase VIII and escaped by using a signal jammer on the first night of Eidul Azha. Apparently, the lives and property of Karachi's citizens are safe neither inside their homes nor on the roads. The incident took place around 3am in Khayaban-e-Ghalib, outside the residence of Tariq Hussain. The thieves arrived in a car, pulled up behind the parked vehicle, disabled its tracker with a jammer, and calmly drove away. The entire theft was captured on CCTV and has since gone viral on social media. Despite repeated incidents, the Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) has failed to prevent the ongoing wave of car and motorcycle thefts across the city. Citizens are left to bear the financial and emotional burden, while police officials continue to express unwarranted satisfaction in internal review meetings - starkly disconnected from the ground reality. Even the patrol team of Sahil Police Station, responsible for the area, failed to deter the culprits during the theft. According to tracker company records, the car's location still shows as the original spot, indicating that the vehicle's actual whereabouts remain unknown due to the jammer. Following the incident, Tariq Hussain filed a complaint at Sahil Police Station. A case was registered and transferred to the AVLC Clifton Division for further investigation. However, as of now, there has been no progress in recovering the stolen car.
