
Vale and its union in Oman honored by General Federation for Advancing Labor Relations
Muscat – Vale and its union in Oman have been recognized with three national awards by the General Federation of Oman Workers, positioning the company as one of the most progressive and employee-focused organizations operating in the Sultanate's industrial sector. Presented during the 2025 International Workers' Day celebrations, the awards acknowledge Vale's structured approach to nurturing labor relations, its commitment to union dialogue, and its broader role in shaping a progressive and resilient workplace.
Among the accolades was the award for Outstanding Union Representative, presented to Nasser Al Mamari, a long-serving member of Vale in Oman's union committee. His selection reflects a record of meaningful contributions to the labor movement, including active engagement with the General Federation, regular participation in official training programs, and his certification as a union trainer. Over the years, Al Mamari has led awareness sessions for colleagues across Oman, supporting a culture of openness, knowledge-sharing, and informed participation.
Vale in Oman's union was also recognized as one of the top-performing private sector unions in the country, based on its collaborative approach and continuous coordination with both company leadership and national labor institutions. Since the union's formation, Vale has signed seven collective labor agreements, each designed to formalize dialogue, anticipate workforce needs, and enhance workplace stability. This structured engagement model includes bi-monthly meetings between union representatives and senior management, as well as direct biannual meetings with the CEO. These interactions have enabled both sides to address emerging challenges, review sector trends, and agree on sustainable solutions in the interest of employees and the company.
Today, Vale's employees enjoy a range of enhanced benefits that exceed national labor law requirements. Oman: 2,600 grape trees in Yanqul yield summer harvest
Muscat- The grape harvesting season has begun in the Wilayat of Yanqul in Dhahirah Governorate. The season, which continues until the beginning of August, features locally grown grapes, one of the summer fruits that are highly sought after in local and traditional markets due to their exceptional quality and rich taste. Salim bin Suhail Al Alawi, Director of the Agriculture and Water Resources Department in Yanqul, stated that grapevines in the wilayat cover an area of approximately 13 acres, with around 2,600 grape trees of various local and imported varieties. These significantly contribute to meeting the governorate's demand for grapes during the summer season, he added. He emphasized that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources provides numerous services to grape farmers, including technical supervision and advisory follow-ups related to planting distances, trellis design, modern irrigation systems, pest control, and the supply of grape seedlings, as well as scheduling preventive spraying and fertilization. He also pointed out that these services involve sharing farmers' expertise and experiences with others in neighboring wilayats and governorates, creating a sustainable income source for farmers while optimizing the governorate's resources. This includes rationalizing water consumption through modern irrigation techniques and crop-specific watering. He noted that these factors enhance farmers' economic returns while preserving the cultural and agricultural heritage of crops that thrive in Oman's fertile environment. meanwhile, Qais bin Nasser Al Farsi, owner of a local grape farming project in Yanqul, highlighted the significance of grape cultivation in the wilayat. Having engaged in commercial grape production for over a decade and a half, he explained that grapevines require continuous care before the flowering and fruiting season, including soil preparation, fertilization, and regular irrigation. Dollar jumps as Israel strikes on Iran rekindle safe-haven appeal
LONDON - The dollar headed for its biggest one-day rise in a month on Friday, as investors rushed back into the currency in their search for safe-haven assets, including gold, after Israel launched strikes against Iran, sparking Iranian retaliation. Israel said it targeted a wide range of military targets in Iran, in response to which Iran launched a barrage of drones. U.S. and Iranian officials were due to hold a sixth round of talks in Oman on Sunday on Tehran's uranium enrichment programme. Israel's ambassador to the United Nations said the government's determination to strike Iranian targets was an independent decision. Initially, the Swiss franc and Japanese yen rallied, before ceding ground to the dollar, which until recently, has always been the ultimate safe-haven in times of geopolitical or financial turmoil. U.S. President Donald Trump urged Iran to reach a deal, "with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal," he said in a social media post. Against a basket of major currencies, the dollar rose by nearly 0.9%, as losses mounted for the euro, sterling and the Australian dollar in particular. The dollar index was last up 0.85%, heading for its largest one-day rise since May 12. "The dollar is reverting to that traditional role of safe haven, which we haven't seen for months," City Index strategist Fiona Cincotta said. "This is headlines driving this. And I think, obviously, we've got the Federal Reserve interest rate decision next week, so the boost may well be short-lived if we see escalations calm down over the weekend," she said. The euro broke a four-day rally to trade down 0.7% at $1.1494, but still within sight of Thursday's near-four-year high of $1.163225. "Geopolitical noise may temporarily distort the dollar downtrend and temporarily weigh on risk proxies especially heading into the weekend," said Christopher Wong, a currency strategist at OCBC. Two inflation reports this week showed price pressures were contained, fuelling expectations of more aggressive interest rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve. But tariffs could filter into prices in the coming months, analysts warned. Following Israeli strikes, crude prices jumped more than $5 a barrel on fears of supply disruptions in the oil-rich region, which could also filter into consumer inflation. Later on Friday, investors will assess the University of Michigan's preliminary survey out of the U.S. for a look at how consumers have fared this month. Decisions from the Fed, the Bank of Japan and the Bank of England are expected next week that could offer investors more clarity on the path ahead for interest rates.
