Cricket-New coach says Williamson still wants to play for New Zealand
(Reuters) -New Black Caps coach Rob Walter says Kane Williamson still wants to represent New Zealand in international cricket despite opting out of the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.
The 34-year-old master batsman turned down a central contract with New Zealand Cricket for this season, enabling him to pick and choose his availability and take up lucrative contracts in franchise cricket.
So instead of playing two tests in Bulawayo in late July and August, Williamson will be captaining London Spirit in The Hundred in England.
"Myself and Kane have had a nice conversation, a long conversation," South African Walter told the New Zealand Herald.
"It was really great to catch up with him and discuss cricket. It was great to get his lens on New Zealand cricket and the Black Caps. He's been so influential in their success over the years.
"But then also to discuss what the future might look like. I've said it repeatedly, he's still very committed to the Black Caps, and wants to play international cricket. I don't think it'll be too long until we see that."
After Zimbabwe, New Zealand play a Twenty20 series against Australia and two limited overs series against England in October before hosting West Indies in all formats at the end of the year.
Williamson stood down as New Zealand's white-ball captain after the Black Caps exited the T20 World Cup last June but played in the Champions Trophy this year.
Exactly what his involvement would be in the short-format game going forward would be a decision for Williamson and he would be welcomed with open arms, Walter said.
"Quality players stay quality players, and they just work at finding a method to be successful in all formats," he added.
"He's a generational talent, I've got no doubt he'd find a way. He's probably jostling with what that actually looks like for him personally. But as I said, quality players find a way."

TSG rider claims Most Combative Rider award at Ordiziako Classic
KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Cycling Team's (TSG) Spanish Classics campaign continued on a positive note at the Ordiziako Classic in the Basque Country yesterday (July 25). Stefan de Bod's spirited efforts in the 167 kilometre race saw him rewarded with the Most Combative Rider award in the UCI 1.1 event which is part of the UCI European Tour. The South African joined an early breakaway and did his best to match some of the best riders in the world. But in the end, it was the big boys from UAE Team Emirates-XRG - the team of the great Tadej Pogacar - who swept the podium. Igor Arrieta claimed the win in three hours, 50 minutes and 23 seconds after pipping Giro d'Italia runner up Isaac del Toro to the line. Antonio Morgado (+16s) completed the podium. Mathias Bregnhoj was the highest placed TSG rider, crossing the line 34th (+1:18s) ahead of Vadim Pronskiy (44th, +2:18s), De Bod (59th, +4:45s) and Kee Zhe Yie (91st, +14:34s). Nur Aiman Rosli and Nur Aiman Zariff did not finish while Anatolii Budiak did not start due to a fever. De Bod, who is in his first season with TSG, was pleased with his performance. "It was a good day, we tried something a little bit different and took a chance," said de Bod. "When racing against the big teams it is difficult to get the results you want, so you have to think proactively. "I decided to go in the break during the first climb when I saw the opportunity. "Unfortunately, it did not go closer to the line. But still, I did my best and showed (highlighted) the (TSG) jersey for the team and won a small prize for the Most Combative Rider." The race featured five category-three climbs which left riders with little room for respite. TSG, who competed at the Terres de L´Ebre Classic earlier this week, will next compete at the Circuito de Getxo-Memorial Hermanos Otxoa race (172.2km) on Aug 3.

Cricket-Root moves to third in all-time top test run scorer charts as England close on India
MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) -Joe Root moved to third in the all-time top run scorer charts to help England close in on India's first innings total on day three of the fourth test at Old Trafford, the hosts 332-2 at lunch on Friday, trailing the tourists by 26 runs. Root moved in behind former Australia captain Ricky Ponting in second and Indian great Sachin Tendulkar at the top of the rankings with his unbeaten 63 taking him above South African Jacques Kallis and into third spot in the rankings. Root and Ollie Pope, who cruised to his 16th test half century alongside Root, ensured England built on their overnight total of 225-2, given to them by opening pair Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett's 166-run partnership. Root's morning was not without concern, as he survived one leg before wicket appeal before almost being run out when on 22, but he otherwise remained his customary composed self to keep England's run rate ticking over. The 34-year-old moved past his 104th score of fifty or more -- only Tendulkar has more in test cricket -- as he and Pope upped the ante later in the morning session, with India struggling to even trouble the pair. Pope will return with Root after lunch on 70, the unbeaten 135-run partnership putting England in a strong position to seal victory in the fourth test, one that would secure success in the five-match series with one test to spare.
