2026 Mock Draft: ESPN tabs Cowboys to try again with 1st-round DT after missing playoffs
The Cowboys' run defense has finished in the NFL's bottom half in yards allowed per carry in each of the past five seasons. And despite the wholesale changes made to both the coaching staff and the roster in Dallas over this offseason, the unit has been promptly gashed in preseason outings against both the Rams and Ravens. Those early indications suggest the unit could continue the trend in 2025. ESPN thinks so, at least. Analyst Field Yates released a 2026 mock draft this week, and he has the Cowboys using their first-round pick next spring to shore up a position that could still be giving them trouble this fall. Yates has the Cowboys selecting Florida defensive tackle Caleb Banks with next year's opening-round pick. A monster at 6-foot-6-inches and 330 pounds, the senior is at least two inches taller than any of the interior linemen currently in Dallas and is outweighed only by Mazi Smith... and then by only seven pounds. But the 22-year-old "also displays the quickness and power to be a disruptive interior rusher," per Yates. Whether the Cowboys will finally get that this year from Smith, the team's first-round pick from 2023, or from new players like Perrion Winfrey or rookie Jay Toia remains to be seen, though hopes are high for all of them. Banks began his college career at Louisville, transferring after two seasons and ending up with the Gators. He started all but one game in 2023 and then turned in a strong junior year that included a 2.5-sack effort versus Mississippi. If his senior season continues that same trajectory, Banks should draw heavy interest from NFL teams next spring and be an early-Day 1 prospect. And there's the rub. Using ESPN's Football Power Index to simulate the coming season and then determine draft order, Yates pegs the Cowboys to wind up with the No. 13 selection in April. That means missing the playoffs in 2025... but maybe landing an interior defensive talent like Banks for 2026. Follow Cowboys Wire on Facebook to join in on the conversation with fellow fans!
