‘Magic in the air': Belen baseball team rides momentum into Region 4-4A finals
Sometimes baseball teams navigate through a rough season with the belief things will click at the perfect time.
Just ask Belen Jesuit.
The Wolverines have hovered around the .500 mark the entire season, reaching it again on Thursday night.
But Belen could care less what the record looks like.
The goal was always to play in May.
The Wolverines won in May impressively on Thursday night, securing a series-clinching 2-0 victory over Merritt Island in the third game of their Region 4-4A semifinal series at Belen Jesuit.
'There's really no words to say other than 'there's some magic in the air,'' an emotional Belen coach Jesse Fernandez said. 'It's been up and down all year for these kids. But if you want to watch a team that plays with heart, doesn't give up, come watch the Belen Wolverines. They're something special to watch.'
The Wolverines (16-16) advanced to the regional final for the first time since 2017 and will face American Heritage in Plantation in a best-of-3 series beginning at Heritage on Monday at 7. Game 2 would be Tuesday at Heritage at 7. Game 3, if necessary, would be at Belen at 6.
The Wolverines will attempt to advance to the state final four for the first time since 2016.
'You go through a whole season and you keep preaching 'play for May' and it's May now and here we are,' Fernandez said. 'I'm excited to get to American Heritage, it's going to be a dogfight.'
Belen lost to Heritage 11-0 on March 4 at home. But the Wolverines have since gone through a tough slate that includes wins over regional final-qualifying teams like Mater Academy and Miami Springs.
'Every single one of those teams we faced tested us and we got here because of that competition,' Fernandez said. 'It's been awesome.'
Junior right-handed pitcher Victor Escobar came up huge on the mound, tossing a three-hitter while striking out three and walking three to lead Belen.
'This is where guys make their moment and I couldn't be happier for Vic,' Fernandez said. 'He carried us on his back and did what we needed him to do.'
Escobar gave up a pair of doubles, but worked himself out of trouble each time.
'I felt great. A lot of emotions in a big game, but I felt loose,' Escobar said. 'For the first few innings, I was trying to find myself, but once I got to the fifth, I felt like I was rolling. I just threw fastballs and attacked. I took a few breaths and kept attacking.'
Sophomore Jose Batista went 2-for-3 and gave Belen a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single that scored Andres Gross. Batista then led off the fourth with a double and came around to score on an error and a hit by David Del Pino.
The Wolverines have been resilient so far in the playoffs, winning games on the road at Melbourne Eau Gallie to win their regional quarterfinal series in three games and this week, winning a game at Merritt Island (24-8) to stretch the series to a third game at home.
'We're just coming together for one common goal to win every pitch and every game and yeah, there's definitely something going on here,' Escobar said.

Mets Predicted to Trade for $50 Million Outfielder After Juan Soto News
Mets Predicted to Trade for $50 Million Outfielder After Juan Soto News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Few would fault a manager for sitting down with a hitter mired in a 7-for-59 slump, even if that hitter is an All-Star with a 15-year, $765 million contract. Advertisement At least for now, New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza and superstar outfielder Juan Soto aren't at that place yet. Mendoza told reporters ahead of Friday's 4-2 victory over the lowly Colorado Rockies that he hasn't felt he and Soto need to talk privately. 'He knows he's in a good place,' Mendoza said, shortly before Soto snapped an 0-for-17 streak. '[I] treat him the same way I treat the other guys, too.' Soto became one of the guys last December, and Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. might be next. Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller proposed the Mets pursue Robert, a 2023 All-Star in the final guaranteed season of a six-year, $50 million contract. Any team that acquires Robert can keep him through 2027 via two $20 million club options. Advertisement Robert, who turns 28 in August, entered Saturday hitting .187 with five home runs, 20 RBI, and a league-high 21 stolen bases. However, his .578 OPS is easily a career-worst, and he's hit just .212 with a 204-51 K-BB ratio across the last two years. '[C]enter fielders worth anything close to a darn aren't exactly growing on trees and readily available at the trade deadline,' Miller wrote. Indeed, Robert would almost certainly man center field—the only position he's played since his 2020 debut—if the Mets acquired him. Mendoza has primarily started Jose Siri and Tyrone Taylor in center. Although Robert is an upgrade over those two, his continued offensive regression is nonetheless concerning. It's also unclear how aggressive the White Sox will be when discussing a return package, especially with a win-now team like the Mets. Advertisement Robert went 1-for-5 with a stolen base against the Mets earlier this week. We'll see if he joins Soto in calling Citi Field home before the summer ends. Reds activate Christian Encarnacion-Strand from IL. What it means for the roster
Christian Encarnacion-Strand is back up with the Cincinnati Reds and in the starting lineup. In order to make room for "CES," the Reds seem likely to lose out on having catcher Austin Wynns' services. Encarnacion-Strand was activated Friday off the injured list, the Reds announced Friday. Encarnacion-Strand had been on the IL since April 17 (back inflammation). "CES" batted .324 with a 1.095 OPS in his 10-game rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville. His hot hitting at that level included two home runs, five doubles and seven RBIs. Advertisement Reds Elly De La Cruz Diamondbacks Reds' Elly De La Cruz is returning from mourning his sister's death. Here's what we know Reds Diamondbacks Friday how to watch What channel are the Reds on? How to watch Reds vs. Diamondbacks on Friday night Reds trade W&W: Cincinnati Reds going nowhere fast, need to trade players even faster "We'll see. He was swinging the bat very well on his rehab while he was in Triple-A," Reds manager Terry Francona said Friday. "If he's able to stay in the strike zone, he's got kinda silly power to all fields. That would be welcome. It maybe allows us to start moving (Spencer) Steer around because when he's healthy enough to do it, maybe it gives us a few more options." Christian Encarnacion-Strand batted .324 with a 1.095 OPS in his 10-game rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville. His hit two home runs with five doubles and seven RBIs. Following his own early-season injury troubles, Steer has been stuck at first base. Advertisement The corresponding roster move with bringing Encarnacion-Strand back was designating Wynns for assignment. In the absence of the since-recalled Tyler Stephenson (oblique strain), Wynns served as the backup catcher to Jose Trevino, who was the projected backup ahead of spring training. Wynns more than held his own behind the plate and with a bat in his hand − so much so that the Reds opted to carry three catchers on their roster when Stephenson returned from injury. In 18 games this season, Wynns hit .400 with 16 hits and 11 RBI. But he was squeezed in terms of playing time with three catchers on the roster. In May, Wynns was used mostly as a late-inning catcher or pinch hitter, and had just seven at-bats during the month. Austin Wynns, whose playing time was limited after Tyler Stephenson returned from the injured list, was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Christian Encarnacion-Strand. Other clubs now have the opportunity to add Wynns, and the Reds will understand if that happens. In some ways, Francona seems to be rooting for the individual because of his professionalism, and because it seems obvious Wynns has more to offer than he can with Cincinnati at the moment. Advertisement "You know what, he deserves it and I would love to keep him in the organization and we told him that," Francona said, "I'm not even comfortable saying 'fingers crossed' because the guy deserves to be in the major leagues. He handled a really (crappy) thing really well. He is (a pro). He was and is and will be." This article originally appeared on Cincinnati Enquirer: Reds activate Christian Encarnacion-Strand from IL. Braves calling up Craig Kimbrel from Triple-A after bullpen's 7-run meltdown in 9th inning vs. D-backs
Craig Kimbrel is returning to the Atlanta Braves bullpen. The Braves are calling up their former All-Star closer from Triple-A Gwinnett, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported on Thursday. Atlanta officially announced the move on Friday, adding that reliever Daysbel Hernández (2.22 ERA in 25 appearances) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation. Advertisement The decision was likely prompted by the Braves blowing a six-run lead in the ninth inning Thursday versus the Arizona Diamondbacks, leading to an 11-10 loss. Atlanta took a 10-5 lead into the ninth. Three of Arizona's first four batters reached base against Scott Blewett, including home runs by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Alek Thomas. Raisel Iglesias relieved Blewett and didn't fare better, allowing five of the next six batters on base with RBI hits by Ketel Marte, Ildemaro Vargas and Eugenio Suárez resulting in four runs and an Arizona lead. Ultimately, five runs were charged to Blewett and Iglesias gave up the lead with the three he allowed. "We're not a bad team. We're a good team that's playing bad," Braves manager Brian Snitker said after the game. "We're all going to be miserable, and we should. We didn't execute and put the game away, and we've got to do that." With the loss, Atlanta dropped to 27-34, placing them fourth in the National League West and 11 games behind the first-place New York Mets. The Braves are also seven games out of the NL's third wild-card playoff berth. Advertisement In 18 minor league appearances this season (15 for Gwinnett), Kimbrel has compiled a 2.00 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 18 innings with 8 walks and 9 hits allowed. Kimbrel, 37, pitched the first five seasons of his career with the Braves, collecting a 1.43 ERA and 186 saves in 294 appearances. He won the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year award and made four All-Star teams during his stint with Atlanta. The right-hander was traded to the San Diego Padres before the 2015 season and he's played for six other teams since then. Last season, he had a 5.33 ERA for the Orioles in 57 appearances despite a strikeout rate of 12.6 per nine innings and was released in late September. Advertisement However, Kimbrel had a 2.80 ERA, 53 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings and 23 saves before the All-Star break. 'Hopefully, he can replicate what he did the first half of last year,' Snitker said when Atlanta signed Kimbrel in the spring. 'It would be awesome if he could come in and do that." During his 15 MLB seasons, Kimbrel has compiled a 2.59 ERA and 440 saves with a strikeout rate of 14.1 per 9 innings. Blewett's outing was his last for the Braves. The team announced that he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday for cash considerations. Atlanta was planning to DFA Blewett (5.51 ERA in 11 games) after Thursday's game, but worked out a deal with Baltimore. It's a return to Baltimore for the right-hander, who appeared in two games for the Orioles before being designated for assignment and traded to Atlanta. Blewett began the season with the Minnesota Twins, but received a DFA and was picked up by the Orioles.
