In the fifth-sixth classification match, both teams displayed a balanced style of play before the Speedy Tigers took the lead in the 20th minute through a penalty corner conversion by defender Syed Mohammad Syafiq Syed Cholan.
Wales pulled level in the 42nd minute through a penalty corner by Rhys Bradshaw.
Gareth Furlong, however, proved to be Malaysia's thorn in the side when he scored the winning goal with just 10 minutes remaining in the match.
Meanwhile, national head coach Sarjit Singh said his players' performance was still far from satisfactory, citing a lack of speed and missed chances to kill off the game at the right moment.
'The young players need to learn. We cannot afford to make mistakes where we're leading 1-0 and thus we paid the price.
'But it's okay, the good thing is every player's commitment on the pitch was good. Only thing we need to improve is our marking in defence,' he told reporters after the match.
In the previous edition, Malaysia finished seventh in Gniezno, Poland.
In the seventh-eighth classification match also held today, Japan defeated South Africa 2-1.

PETALING JAYA: Former national hockey player Jivan Mohan is ready to embrace a new chapter in his sporting journey after being named as deputy chef de mission (CDM) for the SEA Games in Thailand from Dec 9-20. Jivan is excited to play his part for the national contingent and described it as an honour and a challenge. "I'm honoured to be selected. It's a big responsibility that I'm ready to take on,' said Jivan. "It's a new experience for me and I'll do whatever I can to support the athletes in achieving their targets." Jivan is no stranger to SEA Games glory, clinching the gold medal twice, once with the Speedy Tigers at the 2013 edition in Myanmar and the other as an assistant coach at the 2015 Singapore SEA Games under head coach A. Arulselvaraj. With over 150 caps for the national team during his career, Jivan was named one of three deputy CDMs for the Games, alongside former sprint ace Nazmizam Muhammad and Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh. Former national swimming queen Nurul Huda Abdullah has been appointed as CDM. Jivan believes the involvement of former athletes like himself will add a unique layer of understanding and empathy to the support system behind the national contingent. "As ex-athletes, we've gone through the highs and lows of competition. We know how it feels to carry the expectations of a country and what it takes to win," said Jivan. "Many things may have changed nowadays compared to how it was when I competed, but the core, passion, pressure, and teamwork remain the same. "It's a good move by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) to select former athletes to lead the contingent," said Jivan, who is the current Royal Malaysian Police Hockey Association vice-president. Although his sporting roots are firmly planted in hockey, Jivan is eager to share his knowledge with athletes from other sports. Around 700 athletes from 48 sports are expected to represent Malaysia in Thailand later this year.

Sarjit Singh not solely to blame for Speedy Tigers' Nations Cup failure
MALAYSIAN Hockey Confederation (MHC) president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal has dismissed calls to pin the blame solely on head coach Sarjit Singh after the national men's hockey team failed to reach the semi-finals of the FIH 2025 Nations Cup Hockey Tournament. Subahan stressed that responsibility should be shared across the entire squad, including players, following their inability to progress beyond the group stage. The Speedy Tigers finished outside the top five after a 1-2 defeat to Wales in the fifth-place playoff. 'To be honest, I have been in this sport for a long time and I see that the Malaysian team under Sarjit can play. 'They can compete with any of the world's giants,' Subahan said during a press conference today. He pointed to recurring issues, particularly the team's struggle to maintain leads. 'The problem is still the same, the problem of holding the lead. 'For example, when we played against New Zealand, we were leading 3-0 but lost 3-4.
