The Failure Of The Electric G-Class Could Help The Baby G Succeed
For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is introducing a smaller version of the G-Class go-anywhere SUV as confirmed earlier this year, following rumors that had circulated for years. According to the German marque, this move aligns with its plans to counter its recent sales dip – and we agree, because who doesn't want a small SUV that's easier to maneuver in both trails and urban settings?
Mercedes-Benz stopped short of divulging more details about the upcoming "Little G," though reports hinted at electrification – a full-electric baby G-Wagen following the footsteps of the G-Class with EQ Technology. However, recent developments, particularly the lackluster demand for the electric G-Class have affected its roadmap, spelling a win for lovers of ICE.
According to Mercedes-Benz executives who spoke to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, the battery-powered G-Class is a flop, with one unnamed executive saying that "The car is sitting like lead at dealers; it's a complete flop." Other people who wished to remain anonymous admitted that buyers want ICE-powered G-Class, either with a six-cylinder or the mighty V8.
Numbers back those declarations. The German publication released the sales numbers for Europe and found that only 1,450 units of the electric G-Class were sold by the end of April, paling in comparison to its diesel and gas-powered counterparts at 9,700 units sold so far.
There are many reasons for this sales flop. The G-Class with EQ Technology is significantly pricier than its combustion-powered counterparts, plus it has a disadvantage in practicality and functionality due to the use of an electric powertrain.
The same publication has reported that the low sales volume of the G-Class BEV is making the automaker reconsider its plans for the smaller G-Wagen. Contrasting with previous reports, Mercedes-Benz is now considering putting combustion engines in the upcoming model.
However, given the stringent emission requirements in Europe, we expect the Baby G to have some form of electrification, akin to what the automaker employed in the new Mercedes-Benz CLA. This will, of course, offset the penalty of having an engine by the end of the decade.
Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce the smaller G-Class by the end of the decade, so we'll know more concrete information in the years to come.

Confused by latest order? How to calculate if your Jackson County assessment is within limits
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jackson County assessments are showing up in homeowner's mailboxes. Some people may be surprised at the increase after a May order from the State Tax Commission. Some taxpayers may receive tax refunds in June: When payments could arrive That order capped increases in each assessment period at 15% and set 2022 as a starting point for this year's assessments after 2023 assessments were heavily contested. But determining your maximum 2025 assessment is a little bit more complicated than a single multiplication or division. Legislator Sean Smith and Preston Smith (no relation) have been helping homeowners with appeals since assessments skyrocketed in 2023. This week as they went out again they've been getting questions about what the latest State Tax Commission Order and 15% cap really means. 'People look at it and the first thing they see is, I thought it was only going to be a 15% increase and that was the perception. I've probably answered it online 100 times,' Preston Smith said. 'A lot of people are contacting me thinking they only do the 15 percent once, but you have to do it twice,' Legislator Sean Smith explained. To illustrate how it works with the latest rules using 2022 assessments as the starting point, consider a home with a $100,000 assessed value in 2022. To calculate the maximum assessed value in 2023 multiply $100,000 by 1.15 which is $115,000. But then you have to multiply by 115% again to determine the maximum value a home could be assessed at this year. In this example it would be $132,250. The two 15% increases end up yielding a maximum increase of 32.25% during the two assessment periods. 'I would really urge people to do the math themselves to check it, check and really verify,' Preston Smith said. To do that, however, you have to know your home's 2022 assessed value, which according to those who have received this year's assessments, isn't on this year's notices. If your increase ends up beyond the allowances under the State order or if you simply don't agree with your value, you still can appeal. Appeals have to be filed by July 14. The county says estimated savings are included on notices, but are subject to change. Both Sean and Preston Smith say they are pressing the Assessor's Office for complete assessment data in 2022, 2023 and 2025 to see how much home values increased, and how many of those increases equated to the maximum allowed if no new construction was done under the State Tax Commission Order without a physical inspection. Musk and the Millers Got Cozy Outside the White House
During happier times at the White House, Elon Musk was known to spend large amounts of time with Stephen Miller and his wife, Katie, even outside of work. Katie Miller, an aide in the Department of Government Efficiency, was with Musk 'almost all the time' while he was at the White House, before opting to follow him out the door last month, The Wall Street Journal reports. Her departure is thought to have caused friction among White House officials. Miller was reportedly on Musk's payroll the entire time, even when her official role was as a special government employee, according to Politico's Playbook. 'And, like … who was she looking out for?' one unnamed administration official said. The idea that Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff, was a close companion of Musk now seems far-fetched. The two have since had a public falling-out after Musk condemned President Donald Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act as a 'pork-filled' spending bill and a 'disgusting abomination.' Miller, one of Trump's most loyal allies, fired back with a thinly veiled attack on Musk on X on Thursday, writing: 'The only 'new' spending in the bill is to defend the homeland and deport the illegals—paid for by raising visa fees. All the other provisions? Massive spending cuts. There is no 'pork' in the bill. Just campaign promises.' Musk unfollowed Stephen Miller on social media around the same time his attacked him online. The Journal highlighted the fallout between Musk and Miller as yet another example of Musk burning bridges and irritating allies during his stint in the White House. Of course, there was an even more explosive falling-out between Musk and another former close ally on Thursday. The simmering tensions between Musk and President Donald Trump reached boiling point with an extraordinary back-and-forth playing out on social media. Trump lashed out at Musk for opposing his One Big Beautiful Bill Act and accused him of going 'crazy' over his plans to eliminate the electric vehicle (EV) mandate implemented under the Biden administration. Trump also suggested that the quickest way to save billions in federal spending would be to terminate the government subsidies and contracts awarded to Musk's tech companies. Earlier in the day, Trump told reporters during an Oval Office meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz that he believes Musk has 'TDS [Trump Derangement Syndrome].' Responding with a furious post, Musk claimed on X: 'Without me, Trump would have lost the election,' and reposted in agreement a call for the president to be impeached and replaced with JD Vance. He also warned that Trump's import tariffs would trigger a recession later this year. Musk then dropped a 'really big bomb' in the spiralling feud. 'Trump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public,' Musk wrote. It is well known that Trump and billionaire child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019, were at least acquaintances. Epstein partied with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in the 1990s, and Trump flew on Epstein's private jet multiple times during that period. The two reportedly fell out around 2004 over a property dispute in Palm Beach, Florida. There is no evidence Trump was connected to or aware of Epstein's crimes. In a statement regarding the public falling-out, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said: 'This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted.' 'The president is focused on passing this historic piece of legislation and making our country great again.'
