Weak demand for Mercedes G580 EV spurs plans for smaller G-Class with hybrid powertrain
The Mercedes G580 with EQ Technology is equipped with a substantial 116 kWh battery pack, providing an estimated range of 400 kilometers on a single charge. Check Offers Mercedes-Benz's ambitious entrance into the all-electric luxury SUV market with the G580 EQ evidently seems to be off to a rocky start. Since its April 2024 introduction, the all-electric G-Class has raised questions internally in the brand for sub par sales that have forced it to re-consider the futures of its electric off-roaders. Sales disappointment across regions As per a recent Handelsblatt report, top Mercedes officials have lashed out at the sales of the G580 as a "complete flop" and said that the model "sits like lead in dealers' showrooms." Since its launch, the G580 has sold just 1,450 units in Europe and a paltry 58 units in China, one of the most important EV markets for Mercedes. The situation isn't much better in Australia either, where just 156 G-Class units—including internal combustion versions—were sold until the end of May 2025. That's less than 2 per cent of Mercedes-Benz's total Australian sales and a 20.8 per cent drop compared to 2024. Originally conceived as an EV-only vehicle, the new model will feature both electric and petrol-hybrid options for maximum flexibility across markets. This possible change is aided by the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), which forms the basis for the next-generation CLA lineup. This platform enables smoother integration of multiple powertrain configurations, in contrast to the tailored EV platforms of the EQE and EQS—both of which have also been poorly selling. Claimed range of around 420 kms. #shorts The lukewarm reception to the G580 reminds us of the challenges that luxury players face while they transition towards electric mobility. For Mercedes-Benz, it's a blunt reminder that customer preference is hankering for diversity and versatility, but not full EV commitment as of yet. With the 'Little G' likely to have hybrid and electric versions, the company appears to be returning to reality checks—where performance, price, and utility are all relevant. The Failure Of The Electric G-Class Could Help The Baby G Succeed
For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is introducing a smaller version of the G-Class go-anywhere SUV as confirmed earlier this year, following rumors that had circulated for years. According to the German marque, this move aligns with its plans to counter its recent sales dip – and we agree, because who doesn't want a small SUV that's easier to maneuver in both trails and urban settings? Mercedes-Benz stopped short of divulging more details about the upcoming "Little G," though reports hinted at electrification – a full-electric baby G-Wagen following the footsteps of the G-Class with EQ Technology. However, recent developments, particularly the lackluster demand for the electric G-Class have affected its roadmap, spelling a win for lovers of ICE. According to Mercedes-Benz executives who spoke to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, the battery-powered G-Class is a flop, with one unnamed executive saying that "The car is sitting like lead at dealers; it's a complete flop." Other people who wished to remain anonymous admitted that buyers want ICE-powered G-Class, either with a six-cylinder or the mighty V8. Numbers back those declarations. The German publication released the sales numbers for Europe and found that only 1,450 units of the electric G-Class were sold by the end of April, paling in comparison to its diesel and gas-powered counterparts at 9,700 units sold so far. There are many reasons for this sales flop. The G-Class with EQ Technology is significantly pricier than its combustion-powered counterparts, plus it has a disadvantage in practicality and functionality due to the use of an electric powertrain. The same publication has reported that the low sales volume of the G-Class BEV is making the automaker reconsider its plans for the smaller G-Wagen. Contrasting with previous reports, Mercedes-Benz is now considering putting combustion engines in the upcoming model. However, given the stringent emission requirements in Europe, we expect the Baby G to have some form of electrification, akin to what the automaker employed in the new Mercedes-Benz CLA. This will, of course, offset the penalty of having an engine by the end of the decade. Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce the smaller G-Class by the end of the decade, so we'll know more concrete information in the years to come. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. First Clues Emerge About the 2027 Baby G-Class Price
Mercedes-Benz is officially expanding its iconic G-Class family, and now we have the first glimpse into what the all-electric 2027 Baby G-Class might cost. Designed to offer the rugged charm of its legendary sibling in a more compact, accessible form, the Baby G is set to bring a new level of versatility to the premium off-road segment. The 2027 Baby G-Class — often internally referred to as the 'Little G' — will enter a segment beneath the current full-size G-Class, offering a more affordable and city-friendly alternative while staying true to the G's signature boxy design. This smaller SUV is aimed at customers who admire the G-Class's tough-luxury image but seek a version that's easier to live with both on-road and in terms of price. Estimated Pricing for the 2027 Baby G-Class According to early reports, the 2027 Baby G-Class will debut with a starting price of approximately £70,000 — translating to around $92,923 or SAR 348,461. This positions it as a significantly more accessible alternative to the high-end G580 EQ, which currently starts at £180,860 ($240,362 or SAR 901,357). The price difference reflects the Baby G's smaller size, different platform, and electric-only configuration. Despite its lower cost, Mercedes-Benz promises that the 2027 Baby G-Class will not compromise on capability or character. It will feature a rugged design inspired by the full-size G-Class, complete with boxy lines and distinctive off-road posture, but in a more compact form. The new model will also target direct competitors like the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and upcoming Land Rover Defender Sport — but with a luxurious Mercedes twist. A New Chapter in the G Family Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius confirmed the development of the smaller G-Class at the 2023 Munich Motor Show. The 2027 Baby G-Class will be sold exclusively as an electric vehicle and will become a key member of the G sub-brand — a lineup that now stands alongside Mercedes' elite Maybach, EQ, and AMG divisions. Built on the new platform, the Baby G-Class will benefit from a modern electric architecture including 800-volt charging capabilities and the brand's fifth-generation battery pack, expected to deliver a range of over 698 km (434 miles). This same platform will also support upcoming electric variants of the C-Class and GLC. From a design perspective, the 2027 Baby G-Class will maintain the rugged silhouette that made the original G a legend, but with its own personality. According to Mercedes design chief Gorden Wagener, it will still be a 'G' in essence — just smaller, sleeker, and with subtle cues to differentiate it, including a lowercase 'g' on the badge to set it apart from its full-sized sibling. A Luxury Off-Roader for a New Generation The 2027 Baby G-Class represents Mercedes' entry into the compact premium off-road EV space — a growing segment that blends utility with refinement. With a significantly lower starting price than the flagship G580 EQ, this model will broaden the G-Class customer base without sacrificing the essence of what makes a G a G. As anticipation builds ahead of its 2027 launch, the Baby G-Class is shaping up to be a bold and strategic move by Mercedes-Benz — one that promises off-road credibility, electric innovation, and luxury accessibility all wrapped in one distinctive package.
