Weak demand for Mercedes G580 EV spurs plans for smaller G-Class with hybrid powertrain

Mercedes-Benz's ambitious entrance into the all-electric luxury SUV market with the G580 EQ evidently seems to be off to a rocky start. Since its April 2024 introduction, the all-electric G-Class has raised questions internally in the brand for sub par sales that have forced it to re-consider the futures of its electric off-roaders.
Sales disappointment across regions
As per a recent Handelsblatt report, top Mercedes officials have lashed out at the sales of the G580 as a "complete flop" and said that the model "sits like lead in dealers' showrooms."
Since its launch, the G580 has sold just 1,450 units in Europe and a paltry 58 units in China, one of the most important EV markets for Mercedes. The situation isn't much better in Australia either, where just 156 G-Class units—including internal combustion versions—were sold until the end of May 2025. That's less than 2 per cent of Mercedes-Benz's total Australian sales and a 20.8 per cent drop compared to 2024.

In response to this slow traction, Mercedes-Benz is now exploring the development of a smaller, more versatile G-Class model, internally referred to as the 'Little G'. Originally conceived as an EV-only vehicle, the new model will feature both electric and petrol-hybrid options for maximum flexibility across markets.
This possible change is aided by the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), which forms the basis for the next-generation CLA lineup. This platform enables smoother integration of multiple powertrain configurations, in contrast to the tailored EV platforms of the EQE and EQS—both of which have also been poorly selling. The lukewarm reception to the G580 reminds us of the challenges that luxury players face while they transition towards electric mobility. For Mercedes-Benz, it's a blunt reminder that customer preference is hankering for diversity and versatility, but not full EV commitment as of yet. With the 'Little G' likely to have hybrid and electric versions, the company appears to be returning to reality checks—where performance, price, and utility are all relevant.

Bad blood: On India-Canada ties
Ten years after he last visited Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Kananaskis, Alberta, as a special invitee to the G-7 summit outreach (June 15-17), with some hopes that the invitation from Prime Minister Mark Carney will give the two countries a chance to reset bilateral ties. Mr. Carney's call to Mr. Modi last Friday took many by surprise, as it appeared to come at the last-minute, and possibly after some back-channel calls to ensure neither side would be embarrassed by the outcome. Under fire for the invitation despite a pending trial against Indian government agents in Canada, Mr. Carney said, quite rightly, that India, as a major world economic force, deserves to be part of the G-7 outreach deliberations. Regardless of the reasoning, both the invitation and its acceptance indicate a desire on both sides to take India-Canada ties out of the present lows. In the past two years, after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau went public with thus far unsubstantiated allegations that India was behind the assassination of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, and was targeting other Canadian nationals, and RCMP officials even named Home Minister Amit Shah in the conspiracy, both countries have cut mission strengths down to a third. Canada suspended talks for a free trade agreement, while India temporarily stopped issuing visas to Canadians, citing persistent threats to Indian diplomats. Apart from considerable trade and investment, India and Canada are inextricably bound by their people — over 1.86 million are settled in Canada, but remain connected to India. Given the tough task ahead, teams preparing for the Carney-Modi meeting must work with the utmost sensitivity. While ties have nosedived since 2023, they have had a history of bad blood dating back to the 1970s, primarily over the Khalistan issue. It would be naive to imagine that these issues can be resolved in a summit, but a considered decision by both leaders to publicly show respect for each other's positions is necessary. Returning the high commissioners and other diplomats to their posts is an imperative, along with a possible timeline for the restoration of trade talks. Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Carney said that Mr. Modi has agreed to a 'law enforcement dialogue' where, no doubt, the Nijjar case and issues over Khalistani threats to Indian diplomats and community centres will come up, and the public messaging from the meeting will be the most important part of ensuring a path to improved relations. 'Summit-level meetings' such as the one planned in Kananaskis can only open a door toward bettering ties; it is the necessarily tedious and painstaking talks behind the scenes that will actually allow the two countries to step through those doors and essay a different way of engaging each other.

Maharashtra forms task force to integrate bus transport in MMR
The Maharashtra government has constituted a 12-member task force to prepare an integrated bus transport plan for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), with the aim of enabling seamless travel through a unified single ticketing system. The task force will be headed by the General Manager of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), while the Chief of the Transport and Traffic Department of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will serve as its secretary. The ten other members will include senior officials from key municipal corporations such as the Thane Municipal Corporation, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, and the Additional Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA. A government resolution (GR) issued by the Urban Development Department on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) stated that the committee was formed following a meeting of the Growth Hub Regulatory Board held a month ago, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The task force has been assigned the responsibility of drafting a comprehensive plan to integrate public bus transport services and enhance coordination among various civic-operated systems in the MMR, currently lacking a unified transport authority. The task force has been established under the Growth Hub Governing Board, which is also tasked with final approval of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Economic Master Plan. The proposed single ticketing system is one of several initiatives under the wider economic strategy. According to the GR, the initiative aligns with NITI Aayog's Growth Hubs (G-HUB) policy, which aims to accelerate regional economic development by focusing on attracting foreign investment, encouraging startups, and creating employment opportunities. 'The policy recommendations focus on attracting and retaining foreign investment, promoting startups, and generating employment.
