Maharashtra forms task force to integrate bus transport in MMR

The Hindua day ago

The Maharashtra government has constituted a 12-member task force to prepare an integrated bus transport plan for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), with the aim of enabling seamless travel through a unified single ticketing system.
The task force will be headed by the General Manager of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), while the Chief of the Transport and Traffic Department of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will serve as its secretary. The ten other members will include senior officials from key municipal corporations such as the Thane Municipal Corporation, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, and the Additional Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA.
A government resolution (GR) issued by the Urban Development Department on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) stated that the committee was formed following a meeting of the Growth Hub Regulatory Board held a month ago, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The task force has been assigned the responsibility of drafting a comprehensive plan to integrate public bus transport services and enhance coordination among various civic-operated systems in the MMR, currently lacking a unified transport authority.
The task force has been established under the Growth Hub Governing Board, which is also tasked with final approval of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Economic Master Plan. The proposed single ticketing system is one of several initiatives under the wider economic strategy.
According to the GR, the initiative aligns with NITI Aayog's Growth Hubs (G-HUB) policy, which aims to accelerate regional economic development by focusing on attracting foreign investment, encouraging startups, and creating employment opportunities. 'The policy recommendations focus on attracting and retaining foreign investment, promoting startups, and generating employment. They decided to roll out on a pilot basis in four urban regions, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in Maharashtra being one of them,' it stated.

MHADA invites tenders for cluster redevelopment of Kamathipura

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has invited tenders to appoint a Construction and Development Agency for the cluster redevelopment of Kamathipura, which will be implemented by the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB), a unit of MHADA. Kamathipura is one of South Mumbai's oldest and most historically significant neighbourhoods. The MBRRB aims to provide permanent, safe and upgraded homes to 8,001 residents and compensate 800 landowners. The locality spans across 34 acres and consists of a narrow and aging colony which accommodates approximately 943 cessed buildings in 15 lanes. Most of these buildings are almost a century old. The scheme now represents a deviation from redevelopment of individual buildings to cluster renewal, as per Regulation 33(9) of the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) 2034. The redevelopment project of this cluster, supported by the Government of Maharashtra, will be conducted under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister and Housing Minister Eknath Shinde. It is also being actively supported by Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, MP Arvind Sawant, MLA Amin Patel, as well as local residents. An official from MBRRB said, 'Upon completion, the project will reshape Kamathipura into a contemporary urban village. There will be not only residential apartments but commercial areas, recreational grounds and better infrastructure too.' As per the official, 44,000 square metres of land will be transferred to MHADA by the chosen developer. Approximately 4,500 new homes will be introduced into the city's housing stock through the redevelopment. The government approved the cluster redevelopment project through a resolution dated January 12, 2023, after which Mahimtura Consultants were engaged to prepare the blueprint. The project has been given the title 'Kamathipura Cluster Redevelopment – Urban Village.' The compensation for landowners has also been outlined by MHADA. According to a July 2024 government resolution, the landowners will be given dwelling units as per the landholding size, from a single 500 square feet unit for plots up to 50 square metres, to extra units for larger plots. 'The process of tendering is the first big step towards reviving Kamathipura and enhancing the lives of its inhabitants. MHADA wishes this project to act as a model for urban regeneration in heritage neighborhoods throughout Mumbai,' said the official.

Maharashtra Hikes Liquor Duty Amid Challenge To Sustain Ladki Bahin Scheme

Mumbai: Amid the challenge to sustain its flagship Ladki Bahin scheme, the Maharashtra government has increased the excise duty on liquor. The move will help the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis-led government generate Rs 14,000 crore annually. The hike will be on the Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), country liquor and imported alcohol. A new category, Maharashtra Made Liquor (MML), has also been approved by the Cabinet. The prices of the IMFL and premium foreign liquor brands are also likely to increase by 50 per cent. The excise duty on IMFL has been increased nearly five times the manufacturing cost, specifically affecting products with a manufacturing cost of Rs 260 per bulk litre. The duty on country liquor has also gone up from Rs 180 to Rs 205 per proof litre. The state government, which had promised to increase the funds under the Ladki Bahin scheme, is struggling to sustain its flagship scheme amid the financial burden. Under the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, a monthly assistance of Rs 1,500 is given to eligible women in the state. Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar has said that the increment will be implemented as the government gets financially stable. Opposition, however, continues to target the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which comprises the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, for not fulfilling the election promise and the delay in disbursement of instalments. The scheme had turned out to be the game changer in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections, in which the Mahayuti registered a landslide victory. More than 2.5 crores women have enrolled in the scheme, but the verification after the elections led to the removal of over 9 lakhs beneficiaries. During a recent verification by the Women and Child Development Department, which implements the scheme, it was found that 2,289 government employees were taking the benefit. Their names were then removed. The flagship scheme had also created a rift in the government over the issue of fund diversion. Sanjay Shirsat, the Minister of Social Justice Department from Shiv Sena, had openly criticised the Finance department for diverting funds of his department to pay the instalments of the scheme.
