SAN DIEGO (AP) — Catcher Elias Díaz is guaranteed $3.5 million as part of his one-year contract to remain with the San Diego Padres and can earn $500,000 more in performance bonuses.
Díaz has a $1.5 million salary this season, and the agreement announced Jan. 30 includes a $7 million mutual option for 2026 with a $2 million buyout.
He would get an additional $50,000 for 100 plate appearances, $100,000 each for 200, 300 and 400, and $150,000 for 500.
The 34-year-old played for San Diego and Colorado last year, batting .265 with six homers and 39 RBIs in 96 games. He agreed to a contract with the Padres after he was released by the Rockies on Aug. 16 in the midst of a $14.5 million, three-year contract.

Ex-NFL star Richard Sherman charged with DUI— second time he's faced drunk driving charges

Super Bowl champion Richard Sherman has been charged with driving under the influence more than a year after he was arrested in Washington state — the second time the defensive back has faced drunk driving charges. The former Seattle Seahawk was charged with refusing to take a breath test — defined as a gross misdemeanor in the state — which could lead to a harsher penalty, the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office told The Seattle Times. Sherman was pulled over by a Washington State trooper on I-405 just before 2 a.m. on Feb. 24, 2024, but not charged until Tuesday. 3 Richard Sherman sits on set of the Amazon Prime Thursday Night Football before an NFL football game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots on Dec. 7, 2023. AP The 37-year-old had been driving 79 mph in a 60 mph zone while 'bouncing back and forth within the lane it was traveling in,' according to police. Once he pulled over, Sherman told troopers he'd had two margaritas and refused to do a breathalyzer test, The Seattle Times reported. He did, however, agree to do some voluntary tests leading police to conclude he was under the influence and take him into custody, Police acquired a signed warrant to draw Sherman's blood roughly two hours after he was pulled over, which showed his blood-alcohol level of about 0.11, above the legal limit of 0.08. The charges were not filed until Tuesday — the day after the prosecutor's office received the blood test results from the crime lab, the report said. Sherman, 35, was previously arrested for drunk driving and domestic disturbance charges in July 2021 after police said the former Seahawk crashed his car into a construction zone then attempted to break into his in-laws' home outside of Seattle. 3 Sherman takes part in warmups before an NFL football game against the Denver Broncos, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, in Seattle. AP 3 Sherman celebrates after intercepting a pass by Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, on Dec. 22, 2013. MCT The case was settled in March 2022 when Sherman pleaded guilty in Seattle to two misdemeanor charges. Sherman played for the Seahawks from 2011 to 2017, helping lead the team to Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. He later played three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and one brief season with the Tampa Bay Bucaneers before he retired after the 2021 season. He has since worked as a pre and postgame analyst for Prime Video's 'Thursday Night Football' since 2022 and as a panelist on FS1's 'Undisputed.'

Detroit Tigers' Gleyber Torres leads AL second basemen in first update of All-Star voting

Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres appears on his way to becoming a starter for the American League in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park in Atlanta on July 15, as he leads all AL second basemen on the first ballot update. The season's first update was released by MLB on Monday, June 17. Advertisement Torres has received 535,079 votes, ranking ahead of Baltimore Orioles' Jackson Holliday (499,093), Houston Astros' Jose Altuve (446,787) and New York Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. (250,416). The 28-year-old previously made the All-Star Game in 2018 and 2019. Fans can vote for position players (but not pitchers) on The Tigers haven't had a second baseman make the All-Star Game since Ian Kinsler in 2014; a Tigers second baseman hasn't made it via fan voting since Plácido Polanco in 2007. SHAWN WINDSOR: Gleyber Torres bet on himself. Tigers are collecting the winnings Celebrate 125 seasons of the Tigers with our new book! Advertisement There are two phases of fan voting for the 2025 All-Star Game. In Phase 1, which lasts until June 26 (with fans allowed to vote online five times a day), the position player with the most overall votes automatically earns a starting spot. For the AL, that's expected to be Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, currently at 1,568,527 votes. Additionally, the top two vote-getters at each position, plus the top six outfielders, advance to the second round of voting. In Phase 2, all vote totals reset, and fans select the remaining starters from the smaller pool of players who advanced to the second round. The winners of these vote will be announced July 2. Pitchers — including reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, an All-Star last season — and reserves are selected through a combination of player voting and choices made by the commissioner's office. The full All-Star rosters will be announced July 6. Greene, who made the team as a reserve last season, ranks in second among AL outfielders with 675,070 votes, trailing only Judge. The remaining four outfielders in position to advance to the second round: The Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout (475,265), the Cleveland Guardians' Steven Kwan (457,882), Báez (421,342) and the Yankees' Cody Bellinger (416,858). THE FREEP'S ALL-STAR ODDS: Tarik Skubal is making history. So which Detroit Tigers will join him at MLB All-Star Game? Advertisement The Tigers have representation at other positions: Catcher Dillon Dingler ranks third with 316,401 votes, trailing the Seattle Mariners' Cal Raleigh (1,043,168) and Toronto Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk (370,460); first baseman Spencer Torkelson ranks fourth with 426,283 votes, trailing the Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt (667,258), Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (614,726) and Tampa Bay Rays' Jonathan Aranda (483,290). Meanwhile, Zach McKinstry (235,189) ranks fourth among third basemen, Colt Keith (166,230) is sixth among designated hitters, and Trey Sweeney is eighth among shortstops (150,787). For now, the Tigers seem likely to have at least three All-Stars: Skubal, Torres and Greene, with Báez, Dingler, Torkelson and Carpenter on the bubble. The Tigers haven't had a player selected to the All-Star Game by fans since Miguel Cabrera in 2015. Their most recent season with three All-Stars also came in 2015, when shortstop José Iglesias, outfielder J.D. Martinez and pitcher David Price joined Cabrera for the game, played in Cincinnati.
