Over 200 bus crashes in Malaysia since 2023, say police, reasons given – no rest, drugs and faulty vehicles
PETALING JAYA, June 24 — A total of 203 bus-related accidents were reportedly recorded in Malaysia over a 29-month period from January 2023 to May this year, resulting in 39 deaths, 68 serious injuries, and 197 minor injuries.
According to a report in Utusan Malaysia, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said driver behaviour and vehicle condition were among the main causes of the crashes.
'Among them, drivers become fatigued from long hours without rest, lose focus, or exceed speed limits — especially on steep or slippery roads,' he was quoted as saying.
He added that inexperience, poor bus handling skills, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs also contributed to the incidents.
Of the total accidents, 104 occurred in 2023, 61 so far in 2024, and 38 in the first five months of this year.
Mechanical issues such as sudden brake or steering failure, worn-out tyres, or non-functioning lights were also identified as causes.
'Some accidents happened due to pressure from operators chasing tight schedules, with some buses not undergoing proper checks before departure,' Mohd Yusri said.
He also cited poor road conditions, bad weather, overcrowded buses, and weak company oversight as contributing factors.

'TH can only lodge a police report, after which the prosecution will take action. So, while there are already prosecutions and fairly heavy penalties, what we need now is stronger enforcement and firmer prosecution,' he told reporters after the national-level Maal Hijrah 2025 celebrations at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) here today. Mohd Na'im emphasised that any TH-licensed company found to be involved in fraud will have its licence revoked, adding that MOTAC holds similar powers over umrah agencies. Citing Saudi Arabia's strict enforcement measures, he said the country has successfully prevented the entry of haj pilgrims without valid visas through extensive monitoring and operations. 'I had a discussion this morning with Saudi Arabia's Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr Tawfig Fawzan Muhammed Al-Rabiah, who informed me that the ministry implemented stricter enforcement this year, including mounting raids on hotels and accommodation premises,' he said. Media reports cited the harrowing experience faced by 47 Malaysian senior citizens who were duped by an agent and forced to take dangerous routes to reach Makkah after they arrived in Jeddah to perform the haj. Unemployed woman loses RM62,000 in phone scam to ‘TNG rep' and ‘Perak cop'
JERTIH, June 27—A woman lost RM62,000 after being duped by a phone scam syndicate posing as a police officer yesterday afternoon. Besut district police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the 19-year-old unemployed woman answered a phone call belonging to her father from an individual who introduced himself as a representative from Touch 'n Go headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. 'The individual claimed that the victim's father had a RM25,000 summons related to a Touch 'n Go account, then the call was supposedly connected to the Perak police contingent headquarters and spoke to a police officer. 'The victim was further shocked when he was told her that a bank account had been opened in her father's name involved in a money laundering and drug case,' he said in a statement today. Azamuddin said the suspect asked the victim to pay RM60,000 if she wanted to clear his name and because she was afraid, the victim sold jewellery belonging to her mother, who is a retired teacher, to get money for the payment as instructed. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, he said. — Bernama
