Motorcycle convoys blocking traffic risk fines and jail time
KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has warned motorcycle convoys against disrupting traffic flow, stating offenders could face legal penalties under the Road Transport Act 1987. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri confirmed fines between RM1,000 and RM5,000, up to one year in jail, or both for violations. He stressed that all group rides must be reported to JSPT for coordination to ensure road safety. 'If a motorcycle convoy does not receive official security assistance from JSPT, it must fully comply with all traffic regulations. The use of escorts or marshals to control traffic during convoy movements is strictly prohibited,' he said. A viral video recently showed motorcyclists riding in convoy on the North-South Expressway near Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, escorted by individuals in yellow vests. Mohd Yusri urged road users to practice tolerance, advising slow-moving vehicles to stay left and avoid obstructing traffic. He also called for cooperation from all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, to follow traffic rules on highways, state roads, and city streets. – Bernama

Phone use while driving flagged as top accident cause
Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. - AI-generated image KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has recorded over 3.14 million road accidents in the past six years, averaging around 1,720 cases daily, according to police data. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri said most crashes were due to reckless or inattentive driving, particularly mobile phone use behind the wheel. He told Utusan Malaysia that common causes also include loss of control, failing to observe junctions, and ignoring nearby vehicles or animals. Annual statistics show fluctuating trends, with 2020 and 2021 recording lower figures due to pandemic-related movement restrictions. Reported cases were 567,516 in 2019, 418,237 in 2020, 370,286 in 2021, 545,588 in 2022, 599,967 in 2023, and 638,060 in 2024. Despite the rising number of accidents, fatal crash rates have declined due to increased enforcement and targeted operations. Mohd Yusri said the recent 'Ops Lancar' operation cut fatal cases during the Haj holiday from 84 last year to 58 this year. He added that new enforcement strategies and public awareness campaigns are helping improve road safety nationwide. The department has also prioritised investigation efficiency and transparency since he took over the role. Malaysians are urged to remain focused on the road and avoid distractions, particularly mobile phones, to reduce preventable accidents. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Over 200 bus crashes in Malaysia since 2023, say police, reasons given – no rest, drugs and faulty vehicles
PETALING JAYA, June 24 — A total of 203 bus-related accidents were reportedly recorded in Malaysia over a 29-month period from January 2023 to May this year, resulting in 39 deaths, 68 serious injuries, and 197 minor injuries. According to a report in Utusan Malaysia, Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said driver behaviour and vehicle condition were among the main causes of the crashes. 'Among them, drivers become fatigued from long hours without rest, lose focus, or exceed speed limits — especially on steep or slippery roads,' he was quoted as saying. He added that inexperience, poor bus handling skills, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs also contributed to the incidents. Of the total accidents, 104 occurred in 2023, 61 so far in 2024, and 38 in the first five months of this year. Mechanical issues such as sudden brake or steering failure, worn-out tyres, or non-functioning lights were also identified as causes. 'Some accidents happened due to pressure from operators chasing tight schedules, with some buses not undergoing proper checks before departure,' Mohd Yusri said. He also cited poor road conditions, bad weather, overcrowded buses, and weak company oversight as contributing factors.
