6,369 crashes recorded over four days of Op Lancar
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the figure represents an increase of three per cent or 181 cases compared to the same period last year.
He said there were 58 fatal accidents recorded this year, compared to 84 cases last year — a decrease of 26 cases.
'The number of deaths also showed a drop to 78 cases, compared to 88 deaths during the same period last year,' he said in a statement today.
Mohd Yusri said out of the total number of accidents, 6,120 cases involved vehicle damage, a slight increase compared to 5,854 cases last year.
'JSPT is committed to law enforcement to ensure the safety of road users and that traffic regulations are adhered to by all parties.
'Disciplined road users who practise responsible behaviour can help minimise the risk of accidents, in addition to achieving the target of reducing road deaths and injuries,' he said.

Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department (JSPT) director Yusri Hassan Basri said those found guilty under Section 48 of the Road Transport Act 1987 can be fined between RM1,000 and RM5,000, face imprisonment of up to one year, or both. 'Every group movement or convoy must be reported to JSPT for coordination purposes, to ensure the safety of all road users. 'If a motorcycle convoy does not receive official security assistance from JSPT, it must fully comply with all traffic regulations. 'The use of escorts or marshals to control traffic during convoy movements is strictly prohibited,' Bernama reported him as saying today. The warning comes after a video clip showing a group of motorcyclists riding in convoy on a highway, escorted by several people in yellow safety vests, recently went viral. Yusri said the incident is believed to have involved a convoy travelling southbound from Kuala Lumpur at KM 285 of the North-South Expressway near Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. He said all road users must practise tolerance and consideration to ensure smooth traffic flow and mutual safety. 'All slow-moving vehicles must keep to the left lane and avoid obstructing faster vehicles,' he said.
