Revival of Jirga system in erstwhile Fata: Govt to include tribal elders, legal experts: minister
He expressed these views while presiding over an introductory meeting of the high-level meeting regarding the revival of Jirga system in former Fata and other matters on Tuesday.
Besides, Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi, Federal Minister for Planning Ihsan Iqbal, Minister of State for Interior Affairs Talal Chaudhery, Advisor to KP CM Barrister Dr Mohammad Ali Saif, Secretary Kashmir Affairs Zafar Hassan, Chief Secretary KP Syed Shahab Ali Shah, Inspector General of Police (IGP) KP Zulfikar Hameed, former chief secretary KP Shakeel Durrani and others.
The meeting discussed an effective alternative system for development of justice system in merged districts and bringing traditional Jirga system in harmony with the constitutional judicial system.
Speaking in the meeting, Federal Minister Amir Muqam, who is also the convener of the committee said that proposals regarding the development of peace and law and order would presented in the meeting, saying recommendations for the uplift of tribesmen would be framed in consultations with tribesmen.
The meeting also agreed on the formation of a sub-committee and holding next meeting in Peshawar.
On this occasion, Federal Minister for Planning, Ihsan Iqbal said that minimizming dependence on police and provision of justice at grass-root level is essential. He said that KP government is major stakeholder in the process.
He said that they determined to move forward jointly and paid tributes to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Governor KP Faisal Kundi in this regard.
Ihsan Iqbal called for the inclusion of the elected public representatives and tribal elites in the ongoing process.

Kurram Jirga urges lasting peace, cross-border dialogue
The series of regional consultative Jirgas on law and order, hosted by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, concluded on Saturday with the fourth and final gathering held at the Chief Minister's House in Peshawar. The meeting drew a large turnout of tribal elders from Upper, Central, and Lower Kurram, political party representatives, and members of the provincial and national assemblies. They affirmed that both Sunni and Shia communities stood united for peace and pledged full cooperation with the government. "Peace is our fundamental need. Where there is peace, there will be development," they said, reiterating their opposition to all forms of terrorism. The Jirga recommended forming an empowered body comprising federal and provincial representatives, security agencies, and local elders to hold negotiations with Afghanistan, citing Kurram's peace situation as closely linked to the neighboring country. They also proposed opening trade routes with Afghanistan to boost employment opportunities for local residents. It may be recalled that the third consultative sitting in the ongoing series of local Jirgas aimed at restoring normalcy in the merged districts was held on Wednesday with Chief Minister in the chair. The Jirga brought together tribal elders, political representatives, and members of the provincial and national assemblies from North Waziristan, Upper and Lower South Waziristan, and the tribal subdivisions of Wazir, Bettani, Darazinda, and Jandola. Participants held detailed deliberations on the prevailing law and order situation and unanimously recommended steps to improve peace and security. They appreciated the Chief Minister's initiative of engaging tribal elders through Jirgas, affirming that peace remains the foremost priority. "We want peace and stand united against terrorists and terrorism," the participants resolved. The Jirga proposed the formation of a delegation, including federal and provincial government officials, tribal elders, and political leaders, to engage with Afghan authorities for sustainable peace in the region. Participants stressed that development is only possible through peace and stability, and no progress can be achieved without a secure environment. Earlier similar meetings were held with tribal elders from Mohmand, Khyber and Bajaur.

Muqam sees chance for K-P power shift
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Engineer Amir Muqam, has said that a change of government in K-P cannot be ruled out. He asserted that the opposition would prove its majority at the appropriate time. "A strong opposition alliance with 53 MPAs has the potential to shift the balance of power in the province," he said. He was speaking during a condolence visit to the residence of PML-N K-P Additional General Secretary Haji Dildar Khan in Swabi, following the death of his brother. Amir Muqam criticized Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stating that the party does not appear willing to engage in meaningful dialogue, unlike PML-N, which is open to negotiations with all opposition parties. He urged Imran Khan to face the cases against him in court, adding, "PML-N has nothing to do with the verdicts in the May 9 cases." Referring to PTI's protest on Kashmir Exploitation Day, Muqam said the move was inappropriate and disrespectful. "The nation has already rejected them. Calling for protests on August 14, Independence Day, is an act of hostility against the country," he remarked. He alleged that PTI's available leadership is attempting to create chaos on Independence Day to please India and Israel. "The federal government, under PML-N, will celebrate Independence Day with full dignity and express solidarity with the armed forces," he said. He further stated that the people of Pakistan have always voted for PML-N because of its patriotism, and expressed confidence that the party would again form a government under the green flag.
