De'Vondre Campbell not revealing why he quit on 49ers: 'I know the truth and don't care to clear anything up'
San Francisco 49ers linebacker De'Vondre Campbell has yet to address why he refused to play before leaving the field in the middle of a Week 15 game. On Friday, he briefly brought up the topic over several social media posts.
"It's been 2 months and I have yet to address the situation cause I know the truth and don't care to clear anything up," Campbell wrote on X.
In a response to a user telling Campbell there was no excuse quitting on his team, the nine-year NFL veteran said he "ain't addressing sh*t."
"I'm rich and never have to work another day of my life and I told Kyle Shannahan and John Lynch that when they FaceTime me and begged me to come out there an hour after Green Bay cut me."
During the 49ers Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Rams, Campbell decided he was done. After the game, Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Campbell told the team he didn't want to play.
A report from Jay Glazer of Fox Sports said general manager John Lynch confronted Campbell and told him to leave the sideline. Niners players criticized Campbell for not going in the game. The day after the game, Shanahan said Campbell's refusal to go in was "not something you can do and still be a part of our team."
Campbell was suspended for the final three games of the season.
The suspension cost Campbell $261,666 in salary and bonuses, according to Spotrac. Campbell, 31, was on a one-year, $5 million deal with the 49ers.

49ers need injection of youth on list of best players
49ers need injection of youth on list of best players Last season exposed the depth problems that plagued the San Francisco 49ers roster. This offseason they made some moves they're hoping fix some of those depth problems. However, there has to be more to it for the 49ers when it comes to adding youth to their aging roster. They need to find new stars. Pro Football and Sports Network had left tackle Trent Williams listed as the 49ers' best player. Other options we may have considered instead are running back Christian McCaffrey, tight end George Kittle, defensive end Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner. That's an outstanding group of top-end talent, and they're a key reason the 49ers may be able to bounce back and make a deep playoff run this season after a 6-11 finish in 2024. It's also a group that's quickly getting older where their ability to carry the load as the best players on a championship team will begin to diminish pretty quickly. Williams will be 37 by the time training camp starts. He's the oldest of that group. Bosa is the youngest and he turns 28 this season. Warner turns 29 this season. McCaffrey turned 29 in the offseason. Quarterback Brock Purdy and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir both turn 26 this season. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk turns 27. That trio would ideally be headlining a core that has the 49ers contending for Super Bowls three seasons from now. Adding to that top-end group is where the 2024 and 2025 draft classes become essential for the 49ers' future. They need first-round picks like Ricky Pearsall or Mykel Williams to become stars who factor into the "best player" conversation for San Francisco. They would also greatly benefit from a Day 3 pick like CJ West or Malik Mustapha becoming an All-Pro caliber player the way Day 3 picks Kittle and Dre Greenlaw did. This year the current group of "best players" should be good enough to get the 49ers back to Super Bowl contention. If they're going to remain competitive in an expanded Super Bowl window, younger players will need to start taking leaps and establishing themselves as pieces of the team's core. This has been the case for the Kansas City Chiefs, who are looking to bounce back this season following their heartbreaking Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in February. Advertisement Sad as it might be, the reality is that the offseason is also a time for players – especially those who have been in the NFL for an extended period – to reflect on their respective careers and what the future holds for them. In this light, the offseason also brings about retirement announcements from players across the league. This was the case for veteran wide receiver Chris Conley, as the 32-year-old wide receiver announced his decision to retire. Conley, who played the last two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, took to Instagram on Saturday to announce his retirement from the NFL after 10 playing years. Patrick Mahomes played alongside Conley with the Chiefs for two seasons. This was at the start of Mahomes' career, and Conley was one of his weapons out wide. Advertisement Mahomes sent Conley a three-word message on Sunday. "Congrats my man!!!" Mahomes commented on Conley's post. One of the photos Conley used in his retirement announcement included Mahomes. The Chiefs' star quarterback appreciated the gesture, and Mahomes decided to share the photo on his Instagram stories. In his post, Conley said that one of the reasons behind his decision to walk away is that he "set sights on something new." According to his agent, Jonathan Perzley, Conley is going back to the University of Georgia to pursue his dream of becoming a filmmaker.
