Why Maxwell Retire?
Maxwell's decision to retire stems from his desire to concentrate on preparations for next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, the domestic Big Bash League, and other international commitments. He admitted that he could no longer maintain peak performance in the ODI format.
'I felt like I was letting the team down a bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions. I had a good chat with George Bailey, the Chair of Selectors, and asked for his thoughts on the future," Maxwell stated on the Final Word Podcast.
'We discussed the 2027 World Cup, and I told him, 'I don't think I am going to make it. It's time to start planning for others to take my place and make it their own.'
'Hopefully, they get enough time to secure that role. I always said I wouldn't give up my position if I felt I was still good enough to play. I didn't want to hold on for a few more series for selfish reasons. The team is moving in a clear direction, so this gives them the best chance to plan for the next World Cup. I understand how crucial that planning is."

Hyderabad Police Commissioner posts ‘what if' scenario after Bengaluru stampede deaths
A day after 11 stampede deaths in Bengaluru during the celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory in the IPL final, Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand took to social media to post a 'what if' scenario. The trigger was the frenzied celebrations late into the night across parts of Hyderabad as soon as the RCB won the match. Large crowds gathered on the NTR Marg stretch, Tank Bund, and Necklace Road, prompting a swift police response after the situation turned chaotic. 'What if there were some deaths in Hyderabad too? Can anyone expect celebrations for RCB in Hyderabad city?' wrote Mr. Anand on X (formerly Twitter). Watching and hearing about the stampede in Bangalore made me wonder where we are going ! This is not a national team winning the World Cup ! It's a mere franchise called RCB which works on commercial lines and does not have a single Hyderabad player in it !? It's not even a… — CV Anand IPS (@CVAnandIPS) June 5, 2025 'The night patrol officers were caught completely off guard around midnight as hordes of youngsters and revellers descended on the area. Traffic came to a standstill in multiple directions and instances of hooliganism were reported. Police rushed additional forces and carried out a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd,' shared Mr Anand. ' He articulated how impromptu celebrations triggered and choreographed by social media for the unlikeliest causes could be dangerous. 'This is not a national team winning the World Cup ! It's a mere franchise called RCB which works on commercial lines and does not have a single Hyderabad player in it !? It's not even a #Hyderabad based team,' wrote Mr. Anand. 'But with the social media playing a huge role across the country and the globe, perhaps police has to be alert for everyone and everything in future! Is it humanely possible to do so,' he concluded his post on X.

Former Sri Lanka spinner prosecuted for match-fixing
COLOMBO: Former spin bowler Sachithra Senanayake on Thursday became the first to be prosecuted under a new law aimed at stamping out corruption in sport on the island. The 40-year-old was indicted before the High Court in the southern city of Hambantota on match-fixing charges relating to a local tournament in 2020. He is currently on bail after being arrested in September 2023. He denies the charges. Senanayake last played for Sri Lanka in 2016 and made 74 international appearances. He is accused of influencing two Lanka Premier League players to fix matches in 2020. Police said Senanayake is the first player to fall foul of a 2019 law that makes match-fixing a criminal offence. A conviction could result in a maximum of 10 years in jail, a fine of up to 100 million rupees ($333,000) or both. Former sports minister Harin Fernando introduced the tough new law after saying the International Cricket Council (ICC) considered Sri Lanka one of the most corrupt cricketing nations. Another former sports minister, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, told parliament in 2021 that match-fixing was rife in the country. Aluthgamage was jailed for 20 years in an unrelated corruption case. Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup-winning skipper Arjuna Ranatunga in 2012 urged fans to boycott matches in protest against what he called "mismanagement, corruption and indiscipline" in the national team.
