Inside the life and home of south London's most notorious brothel keeper

Inside the life and home of south London's most notorious brothel keeper

Metro18 hours ago
Neighbours of a house once owned by the notorious Madam Cynthia Payne says she helped put their suburban enclave 'on the map'- and even helped to drive up house prices.
The large property in Ambleside Avenue, Streatham in south London, was turned into luxury flats in 2021 but was once a hotbed of vice – with Payne hosting a cast of characters reportedly including a peer of the realm, barristers, ex police officers bank managers and priests.
Despite being well-known among her clients and locals in the area for a number of years, it wasn't until 1978 when she shot into the spotlight after police raided her home while a sex party was in progress.
During a trial in 1980, a court heard that Payne had been charging her elite clientele £25, which was exchanged for a 'luncheon voucher' – a token that entitled the bearer to have sex with women provided by Payne.
Madam Cyn, as she was known, was convicted of running a disorderly house at her trial in 1980 and ended up serving four months in Holloway prison after her 18 month sentence was reduce to a fine and a six-month jail term.
She was released on August 17 1980, 45 years ago today, and was pictured leaving the prison giving photographers the v sign – which she said was 'V for voucher, v for victory' – with her pet dog Sandy.
Cynthia went on to become a TV personality, and was regularly seen sitting on the sofas of chat shows, including the Dame Edna Experience.
Her life was also turned into two films, with Julie Walters portraying a character based on her in the 1987 film Personal Services, and the 1987 film Wish You Were Here, which was based on her childhood growing up on the Sussex coast.
She later died in November 2015 aged 82, with the house in Ambleside Road fetching in the region of £1 million when it was sold and converted into six flats, later put on the market at around £399,000 each.
Despite the notoriety of the house, the current residents told Metro they were in debt to Payne for giving the area an identity.
Folashade Alade told Metro: 'She is very famous around here. I remember when it was her funeral. Obviously she had an interesting life and put the area on the map. Everyone knows about her and is interested in the house.
'I remember going to renew a passport at the passport office in Victoria and the man who was processing the documents saw the address and said excitedly 'Ah, you live next door to Cynthia Payne!'
'It's her who this area is known for, it's incredible. We were all very sad when she died.'
Enrique Viana, 43, a statistician, said: 'I'm originally from Spain but I heard of Cynthia Payne from the film about her. Now I live here and it's a lot of fun that I'm in the area where she was.
'Everyone knows about it and it is a bit of London history. I think it's good for the area – I tell all my friends about it.
'It's an expensive area now with character, I'm sure she helped it become somewhere special.'
A resident of one of the newly-converted flats in the former brothel added: 'It's nothing like it was inside but you do get tourists having a look from the outside. It's a bit of fun and London life.'
Locals said Cynthia used to drink in local called Pratts & Payne, on Streatham High Road, which has now closed. There is no family connection but she was a well known face there.
One neighbour said: 'Cynthia used to go there. I don't know if it was because of the name but she was a regular and I'm sure had many tales to keep regulars amused.'
Following her death, her funeral saw mourners dressed in French maid outfits, policemen while her coffin was decorated with flowers spelling out 'SEX'.
Patrick Littlemore, chief executive of Marsh & Parsons, marketed the new flats built at Payne's former home and emphasised the history of the impressive detached building. More Trending
At the time, he said: 'It's fair to say that this building has a somewhat colourful past but that said, who wouldn't want to live in a home with history?
'These newly refurbished apartments have been finished to an incredibly high standard with interiors that are a far cry from their questionable décor of the seventies – and prospective buyers will be glad to see that there's not a red light in sight!
'We have no doubt that they will attract buyers who will enjoy living within walking distance of all the amenities that Streatham has to offer, in what has become a highly desirable area.'

Strictly star 'almost turned down' show over terrifying stalking ordeal

Strictly Come Dancing 2025 contestant Chris Robshaw almost didn't sign up to the show after being stalked. Insiders close to the England rugby icon have said he was the subject of a harassment campaign by a woman he met briefly at two separate work events in 2024. According to reports, the abuse began six months after the pair met, and Robshaw, 39, contacted police after she threatened him with violence and spread false allegations about Robshaw and his colleagues. The Sun reports that the woman is being sought by law enforcement after leaving the country. It's claimed by the publication that the BBC is aware of the issues Robshaw and his wife, Camilla Kerslake, and two children have faced and is supporting him. 'Chris almost turned down Strictly because of what this woman has been putting him and his family through,' a source said. 'She's made some disgusting threats. It has been awful for them. 'Chris and Camilla have been told by the police they're not alone. This woman has form for what she's been doing to them and has done it to other people too.' They said that Robshaw decided to appear in the show for his son Wilding, who 'wanted mummy to laugh at his dancing.' The insider alleged that the woman made threats and allegations about Robshaw and his wife, as well as their colleagues, and that she is attempting to 'ruin Chris and Camilla's life.' Speaking to Metro, a representative for Robshaw said: 'This is an ongoing police investigation, and therefore we are unable to comment at this time. 'Chris will not be commenting further.' The source went on to describe the ordeal as 'deeply frightening' and said Robshaw contacted police 'the minute his children were put into danger.' 'This woman posted their address online and made really nasty threats against him and his family,' they continued. 'It's deeply frightening that no one has been able to stop her; she's fled the country and has been clever to avoid arrest. 'They've been advised by their case officer that the minute this woman steps back onto UK soil, she will be arrested.' The Sun reports that the woman was arrested in December and released with a caution. More Trending A source alleged Kerslake had also been targeted by the woman, with it being claimed that she contacted a company the musician was due to work with to make 'false and damaging claims.' They added that ahead of Strictly's upcoming season, Robshaw just 'wants to crack on with the competition and give it his best shot.' He was announced this week as part of the 2025 season alongside the likes of Balvinder Sopal, Dani Dyer, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, and Vicky Pattison, among others. Robert loses everything in Emmerdale - but a twist follows

John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth)'s campaign against his brother and love-rival Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) reaches a critical point in upcoming Emmerdale episodes as he seeks to turn everyone in the village against Robert. Robert is, of course, Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller)'s first husband and many fans would say he will always be Aaron's true love. 'Robron,' as the couple were affectionately known to fans, were torn apart in 2019 when Robert was sent to prison for the manslaughter of the man who raped his sister Victoria (Isabel Hodgins). In a surprise twist he reappeared in the village on a particularly auspicious day – the day Aaron was about to marry John – who happens to be half-brother to Robert and Victoria. Reunited, it was obvious there was still huge chemistry between Robert and Aaron and they kissed. Ultimately Aaron chose John, and went through with the wedding. It does seem that there's unfinished business between Robert and Aaron, though, and this infuriates John. Since then, he's taken every opportunity to try to goad Robert, even getting his rival worked up to such a pitch that he smacked John over the head with a wrench – an incident that John has footage of. In recent episodes John managed to wind Robert up by poisoning the mind of his nephew Harry against Uncle Robert. When Robert lost his temper at Harry's drumming while he was looking after him, Harry was left terrified. And John was on hand to look like the good guy and be a reassuring person for Harry to cling to. Adding a bit more fuel to the fire, John exaggerates what happened when he tells Victoria about the incident. This is the last straw as far as she's concerned and she's finally had enough of Robert. John's next move is to make sure Robert is fully aware of how upset Victoria is. He gloats that Robert has lost both Victoria and Aaron. This leaves Robert in absolute despair. At his lowest point, he smashes up his room. This commotion is overheard by Aaron, who stops Robert's rampage and calms him down. Robert tells him he knows he's messed up and he's lost everything, including Aaron. He's surprised by Aaron's response. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? He says the reason he's been keeping away is that he's feeling conflicted himself. Although he's with John, he has feelings for Robert that won't go away so his only option has been to avoid him. More Trending With Aaron's confession out in the open, the two give in to their mutual passion and end up sleeping together. Obviously this is the exact opposite of what John wanted and potentially puts both of them in danger if he should find out. And that's a real possibility as, lying in bed together, they hear Victoria and John outside talking about how they should check in on Robert. Awkward. And quite possibly deadly. Strictly's Motsi Mabuse breaks silence after legal battle against ex-husband

Strictly Come Dancing judge Motsi Mabuse has issued a message to fans following her £70,000 legal battle with ex-husband Timo Kulczak. The couple tied the knot in 2003 before divorcing in 2014, with Motsi accusing her ex-partner of abusive behaviour. Last year, her ex-husband started court proceedings to sue her following claims in Motsi's autobiography, Finding My Own Rhythm: My Story, which was released in 2022. In the memoir, she said Timo paid her an allowance from her dance teaching and TV earnings, controlled her diet, and rejected her wants to have a baby. He has denied these claims. Motsi had been sued for £70k by Timo, but this week, a German judge ruled in her favour following the long-running court case. Taking to her Instagram Stories, she wrote: 'After almost three years the legal proceedings against me have now come to an end with the court ruling in my favour. 'This case has been a long and challenging process accompanied by media coverage and many articles over the years it has been a constant burden and I am relieved that clarity has finally been achieved. 'I would like to thank my family especially my husband my lawyer my team and those who supported me throughout this time now I can close this chapter and focus on the future with renewed strength.' In 2023, Timo accused Motsi of lying in order to 'push book sales' and claimed he was 'a loving and caring husband' during their marriage. 'She did something bad to me and my family and I can't accept that,' he told The Sun. 'Now I have reached a point whereby I cannot just let things stand as they are when something is put out there in public and it is simply not true. 'I am deeply disappointed and hurt. Looking back, I remember a very good and positive and happy time that simply cannot be compared to some of the claims about me that have now come to light. 'I was a loving and caring husband who was always by her side at any time, when she needed help. I don't feel I was controlling, I see all of what I did as organising and being helpful to her.' His lawyers asked the court to jail Motsi for up to six months or fine her £250k if she ever repeated the claims from her book. Motsi's representatives claimed at the time that 'no such written court order exists'. 'It is categorically untrue that our client faces imprisonment with regard to her former husband's civil lawsuit, or that a fine, which would only be payable if our client culpably violates a court order, would be more than a nominal amount,' they said in a statement to The Mirror. More Trending 'There is no legal basis for this lawsuit. To reiterate, our client reserves all rights in this matter.' After her divorce from Timo, whom she had moved to Germany to be with when she was 18, Motsi married her new dance partner, Evgenij Vozynuk, in 2017. The couple have a daughter and run a dance school together near Frankfurt.
