Many teams cut their mandatory minicamp practice schedule short if the coaches like what they've seen early on, but Kellen Moore took a creative approach with the New Orleans Saints this week. After a spirited offense-versus-defense basketball game before Thursday's final practice session, Moore gave the team an opportunity to get the day off. And a rookie quarterback stepped up and seized the moment.
"Today Hunter Dekkers made a three pointer in the team meeting, and so we chose to go to Five O Fore Golf and spend some time as a team. So, it's been awesome," Moore told reporters afterwards. When asked why Dekkers was the pick to make the key shot, he said that was up to Juwan Johnson, the offense team captain in the basketball game. He continued, "The offense won, and we doubled the ante, and gave Hunter a shot. If he made it practice was over. So he made it, he had confidence, he let it go. He's got a little high school basketball in his background, so no one was surprised."
Dekkers was a multi-sport athlete at West Sioux High School in Iowa, competing in not just football and basketball but also baseball and track, too. So it clearly didn't take long for him to earn some respect from vets like Johnson for his athletic ability. But what if he had missed? Would Moore have sent the team out to the practice field, or was the plan all along to take the day off for another group activity after they played paintball last week?
"There might've been a few more shot opportunities, hopefully. Really glad it was the first guy that made it. Didn't have to go down that road," Moore grinned.
Moments like these matter. Giving the undrafted rookie a chance to shine in the spotlight and have the whole squad cheering for him matters. Getting the offense and defense to compete against each other away from the practice field matters. Showing the young guys and new free agents around town (and supporting one of their teammates' businesses; Alvin Kamara is an investor in Five O Fore) matters. That's how you build culture and camaraderie, and it's clearly a priority for Moore. Hopefully it makes a difference in the fall.

Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at tenth-year kicker Wil Lutz, No. 3. Before the Broncos: Lutz (5-11, 184 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia State with the Baltimore Ravens in 2016. After failing to make Baltimore's 53-man roster, Lutz was claimed off waivers by the New Orleans Saints, who were coached by Sean Payton at the time. Lutz went on to spend seven years in New Orleans (missing one season due to injury), converting 165 field goals with a long of 60 yards. His 781 points with the Saints rank second in franchise history, only trailing Pro Football Hall of Famer Morten Andersen (1,318 points). Advertisement Broncos tenure: After becoming the coach in Denver in 2023, Payton traded a seventh-round draft pick to New Orleans in exchange for Lutz (the Saints moved forward with Blake Grupe). Lutz went 30-of-34 on field goal attempts in his first season with the Broncos and 31-of-34 last fall, tying Jason Elam's franchise record for the most field goals in a single season. Through two years (34 games) in Denver, Lutz is 89.7% on field goal attempts with a long of 55 yards. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Lock. Saints sign Cam Akers, adding more competition to their backfield Akers won a Super Bowl with the Rams but is still looking for the right team fit The New Orleans Saints have officially signed veteran running back Cam Akers. This was initially reported by Nick Underhill of before being confirmed on the NFL transaction wire. After reportedly showing interest in running back Nick Chubb before being signed by the Houston Texans, the Saints brought in Akers for a tryout at minicamp this week. Akers, who turns just 26 on June 22, will be with his fourth team in the last three years. After a 2nd Team All-ACC selection with the Florida State Seminoles, Akers was selected in Round 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. Despite missing four games and sharing backfield snaps as a rookie, Akers led the Rams with 625 rushing yards. He'd suffer an Achilles injury in 2021 that limited him to only one regular season game. However, Akers returned in time for the playoffs to pick up 248 yards from scrimmage in four games on the way to the Rams Super Bowl LVI championship. Akers would rebound from the Achilles in 2022 to lead the Rams with 786 yards on the ground and 7 scores, both of which would be a career best. Los Angeles would trade Akers to the Minnesota Vikings early into the following season, where he'd pick up only 138 yards in six games before landing on injured reserve. He signed as a free agent with the Houston Texans during the 2024 offseason. After just 147 yards over five contests, the Texans traded him back to Minnesota. In his second stint with the Vikings, Akers ran for 297 yards in the last 12 games of last year. Over his five years in the NFL, Akers has averaged four yards per carry while picking up 2,025 rushing yards. He's added 388 more as a receiver on 52 catches and has scored a total of 17 touchdowns. Akers has been hampered by injuries and never was able to secure a featured backfield role. However, he has excellent power between the tackles and good burst into the second level of a defense. The addition of Cam Akers adds to the competition in the New Orleans backfield. Alvin Kamara will continue to be the team's featured weapon. Behind him, the often-injured Kendre Miller and 2024 veteran pickup Clyde Edwards-Helaire haven't been able to provide viable threats. The Saints also added Kansas running back Devin Neal in Round 6 of this year's draft along with Delaware running back Marcus Yarns as an undrafted rookie.
