Missing an alert from your continuous glucose monitor may result in health consequences like vomiting, seizures, loss of consciousness and hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic symptoms.

Dexcom is one of the most popular continuous glucose monitor brands, and many people with diabetes use Dexcom devices to track their glucose levels in real time.
According to Dexcom's update, even without the audio output from the speaker, your receiver will still alert you through vibration and visual prompts. However, that's only so helpful when many people keep their receivers in their pockets or bags. People who use the mobile app for glucose values, alerts and alarms will still be able to do so without interruption.
If you own a Dexcom continuous glucose monitor, here's what you should do right now
A continuous glucose monitoring system has three parts: the glucose sensor you wear, a transmitter and the small receiver you keep for alerts. The receiver is being recalled, not the sensor you wear, so you shouldn't expect the readings you get from your device to be inaccurate.
If you use a Dexcom continuous glucose monitor, check the complete list of affected devices for the model and serial number. You can also go to Dexcom's website to see if your device is affected. These numbers are on the back of your receiver.
If your device is affected, contact Dexcom immediately for a free replacement. Continuous glucose monitors aren't something you can just stop using, so it's essential to get in your replacement order as soon as possible. Remember, while you wait, that there's a chance your receiver speaker isn't working correctly and you will not be alerted with a sound to spikes or drops in your blood sugar.
You should regularly test the speakers each time you charge your receiver. When you plug the receiver in, the Speaker Test screen will appear for a few seconds. To test your sound, follow the directions on the screen. If it doesn't beep, then it's time to contact Dexcom. Remember that it's important to continue testing your speaker over time. Checking it once doesn't mean it can't fail in the future. Even if your device isn't under recall, this is a good habit to have.

Liver Cancer Cases Are On The Rise. Here's How To Avoid Getting It
The number of new liver cancer cases will nearly double in the next 25 years, if no public health interventions occur, according to a new global study published in The Lancet. According to the study, there will be more than 1.5 million new cases of liver cancer globally by 2050, up from more than 850,000 in 2022. Liver cancer is not just your typical run of the mill cancer. It currently ranks as the sixth most common cancer worldwide, and the third deadliest. Survival rates are also brim, with 5-year-survival rates ranging from 5-30%, according to HealthDay. Although these alarming trends could represent an emerging global health crisis with profound implications for public health, there is a tremendous amount of hope. According to the aforementioned study, about 60% of liver cancer cases could be prevented by addressing a handful of risk factors. Since the cancer is responsible for killing 700,000 people globally every year, addressing these specific risk factors should be the focus of future public health interventions. The major preventable drivers for liver cancer include Hepatitis B and C, alcohol and liver diseases associated with obesity and metabolic dysfunction. The good news is vaccinations and anti-viral therapies can nearly eliminate one's risk of getting cancer or even acquiring the viral infections of Hepatitis B and C. The Hepatitis B vaccine, for example, which is given usually as three doses during the first two years of life, provides protection against the virus for at least 95% of healthy adults and children, according to the World Health Organization. Similarly, taking an oral pill for 2-3 months can cure nearly 98% of those with Hepatitis C. There could be significant barriers in decreasing liver cancer rates by 2050, particularly because of the high level of vaccine hesitancy that continues to exist globally that has deterred parents from vaccinating their children. Although vaccines remain a safe and effective measure to decrease the risk of disease and death, vaccination rates for many diseases are declining throughout the world. As an example, global coverage for the Hepatitis B vaccine is just 17% in the WHO African region according to the WHO, which is due to not just to access issues but also misinformation and vaccine hesitancy. Another important preventable risk factor for liver cancer is alcohol. This drug is known to result in scarring of the liver, a condition known as cirrhosis which can then lead to liver cancer. Nearly 400 million individuals, or 7% of the world's population aged 15 years and older, live with alcohol use disorder. Even drinking one glass of alcohol per day can increase one's risk of developing liver cancer, according to a study published in Cancer Causes Control. Policy interventions such as taxes on alcoholic beverages, warning labels and bolstering education could significantly decrease alcohol intake and thus prevent liver cancers associated with alcohol intake. Finally, liver diseases associated with obesity are becoming more prevalent in America and globally. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects 40% of individuals globally and is largely associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes. This disease, and thus cancer that could occur from it, is largely preventable with a balanced diet, regular physical activity and weight control. Given how many people are overweight and obese globally, curbing obesity could significantly decrease the projected number of cancers that may occur by the year 2050. Liver cancer is among one of the hardest cancers to treat once advanced, which is reflected in the low 5-year-survival rates. Treatment for it can also be costly and long-term, burdening healthcare systems worldwide. Without acting to increase vaccinations, enforcing alcohol regulations and promoting healthy food environments, the world risks watching a largely preventable disease inflict devastating social and economic consequences worldwide. Prevention isn't just possible- it's essential.

'They're often full of added sugars, artificial ingredients and processed oils, while also lacking the fiber, healthy fats and nutrients your brain needs to thrive. When eaten regularly, they can disrupt the way your brain functions and increase the risk for mental and cognitive health problems over time,' he you freak out too much, Dr. Maniscalco says that when only eaten occasionally, these snacks are nothing to worry about. But if added sugar-filled granola bars or flavored yogurt are part of your daily routine, he says that over time they can increase the risk of Dr. Faye Begeti, PhD, a neuroscientist and author of The Phone Fix, also says that ultra-processed foods—which can include granola bars and flavored yogurt—are detrimental to brain health long-term. 'Ultra-processed foods tend to be high in refined sugars and unhealthy fats and typically lack essential nutrients our brains need. Regularly consuming these foods can negatively affect blood sugar control and increase inflammation, both of which are linked to impaired cognitive function, memory issues and a higher risk of dementia later in life,' she explains. Dr. Maniscalco adds to this, saying, 'Inflammation doesn't just affect your joints or your gut; it affects your brain too. Inflammatory chemicals can interfere with how your brain cells communicate, making it harder to focus, regulate emotions and stay mentally sharp.' Scientific research backs this up, showing that regularly consuming ultra-processed foods is linked to a higher risk of dementia. Neurologist and author Dr. David Perlmutter, MD, says that orange juice often contains more sugar than many people realize. 'We often think a glass of orange juice is a healthy way to start the day, but a 12-ounce serving contains an astounding 31 to 39 grams of sugar, comparable to or even exceeding the sugar in a 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola, which has about 39 grams,' he says. Though orange juice has vitamin C, Dr. Perlmutter says that the high sugar content outweighs this benefit. 'It causes a rapid blood sugar spike, triggering insulin release and promoting fat storage and inflammation,' he explains. A healthier way to get your vitamin C? Have an orange. That way, you get the added benefit of fiber and don't get the added sugar that juices contain. Consider this yet another reminder to check the nutritional panel and ingredients list when shopping for snacks. If you want a snack that lowers your risk of dementia instead of increasing it, Dr. Begeti says to choose something high in omega-3 fatty acids. This can include a handful of nuts, edamame or smoked salmon on toast. Maniscalco says that foods high in antioxidants and fiber support short-term and long-term brain health too. Some examples of this include trail mix containing berries and nuts, hummus and veggies and avocado on whole grain toast. Transitioning from eating sugar-filled processed snacks to nutrient-rich snacks can be challenging at first, but Maniscalco says it gets easier over time. 'One of the biggest barriers to switching from ultra-processed snacks to whole-food alternatives is taste. Hyperpalatable foods overstimulate your taste receptors and reward pathways, essentially desensitizing you to natural flavors. As a result, whole foods may initially taste bland or 'off.' But the good news is that your taste buds regenerate every one to two weeks, and your brain adapts too. After even 10 to 14 days of reduced added sugar and processed flavoring, most people report that fruit tastes sweeter, vegetables are more satisfying and cravings diminish. In other words, whole foods start tasting really good—you just need to give your brain and palate time to adjust,' he explains.
